Before that, I had been on since early '93 (at least for those stretches of time when the list was actually RUNNING ;)(No offense woj.) It's good to be back, and it's nice to see some of the same faces still hanging around (hi Bayard!) The same irrepressible spirit appears to be still very much in evidence as well. My two bits on Storefront: I actually really enjoy the whole thing. And I don't think that's just a fawning fan-boy opinion either. Robyn's done some stuff that doesn't appeal to me for whatever reason, so it's not like he can do no wrong in my eyes. I think that Storefront has an immediacy and a vibrancy that is usually there in his live shows, but is often conspicuous in its absence from his studio recordings (not to say his studio work is bad! Just different.) For me, the disk is a welcome continuation of the lush and organic --yet polished-- tone that he found with Moss Elixir, with some of that live spirit mixed in. The spoken word bits... well, they're not the funniest that I've heard him do (those would probably be the monologues from a McCabe's boot that I've got) and they're not the most magical (I'm particularly fond of the live Heaven intro on the Fegmania! reissue) but I don't mind them. I'm glad that they are there, and I don't skip over them. They give the show a nice relaxed rhythm for me, which the songs are well suited for. Anyway, thanks to Capuchin for pointing out that Django was stocked with the vinyl version. My comments are based on impressions of the cd version, but I picked up the vinyl there last night and can't wait to listen to it. Does anyone else think that Robyn was OBLIGATED in some cosmic sense to perform Freeze on "Storefront Hitchcock", given that Demme's previous credits include "Stop Making Sense"? I wonder what Demme fans who aren't too Robyn literate will think (did he write that bridge specifically for the film, or what?) :) Apologies if this topic has been picked to death already, but as I say, I only recently re-upped: I picked up Grant Lee Buffalo's Jubilee several months ago, and have enjoyed it profusely. I got it on the strength of the notices that it received, and based on the fact that Robyn seems to admire them. I had high hopes for the album --even never having heard GLB before-- and they were exceeded. Robyn's contribution is limited, but I do enjoy his hamronica noodling on "My, My, My". I must say though that I'm really looking forward to hearing Grant Lee Phillips' contributions on Jewels For Sophia. Well, it's good to be back. Take care everybody, - -Michael P.S. The one with the candy-cane lettering, and Robyn in a polka dot shirt, looking for all the world like a crab? Yeah, I've got that. I've seen it live a strange double life. The couple I got around the time that Robyn played Glasgow in 1995 were priced as promos; three quid each, or so. I've seen it recently at a tenner. I also saw it in Baltimore as a special import, at about $20. It's worth having. If you can get 'em at the low price, they're good for evangelization purposes; Catherine isn't wild about Robyn generally, but 'Statue With A Walkman' remains a favourite. The scratchy Dylanesque "He's a stationary dude" has entered our shared vocabulary. I haven't seen SH yet, but then, I haven't been to any CD stores.
