Has Robyn > ever covered any Bowie? In January down at Cafe Largo, a bit of this went on. The story, as I remember it, began when Grant Lee Phillips marched onstage and found one of Jon Brion's toys, specifically a battery-operated gorilla that played (and danced) the Macarena. Grant held it up to the mike with a "Get a load of this!" expression on his face. Soon he and Robyn started trying out a couple of random song lyrics to the beat of the gorilla, eventually settling on "Golden Years." Jon and Tim Keegan gave them bemused looks as they ran with that, acapella and dancing, then changed over to an ephemeral attempt at "Fame" before giving up. Man, that was a fun show. Anyway, that's the only Bowie cover that I know of, offhand. On another note, I thought I'd share that a couple of nights ago on the street outside my apartment, there was a man, naked but for a silver loincloth and a headdress with one red feather sticking straight up, dancing, playing the violin, and loudly singing some bizarre cross between Indian chants and opera. The weird thing was that on the violin case was the one word... "THOTH" On yet another note, I'm attempting to compile a discography for The Screaming Blue Messiahs. The only one that seems to exist on the web lacks the detail I'm looking for. I've put quite a bit of information together, but if people could help me nail down some of the details, particularly about some non-US releases, I'd really appreciate it. Just to tie that in with RH, it was Bill Carter and Chris Thompson of SBM who, along with John Kingham, backed Robyn up on the song "Eaten By Her Own Dinner." Carter, Thompson, and Kingham also backed up Tony Moon in the band Motor Boys Motor, and Tony Moon went on to produce many of Robyn's videos. Erm.....a note about this. Concerning Item 1: Writing the station's call letters on something is part of attemping theft prevention. I assume the "unscrupulous" was tongue in cheek? The station where I work has had problems with people stealing and selling stuff from the library. The only way we can possibly get things back (assuming that the person is successful in selling, which they often aren't as used stores usually know better than to buy marked CDs) is if the CDs are found with marking on them. An incident of this nature happened when I was jazz format chief- someone spotted some WHPK jazz CDs at a used store. I wouldn't have known of the theft possibly for weeks if the marked CDs hadn't been spotted (the person had stolen pretty selectively, not, say, just grabbing an armful), and there would have been no way to reclaim them if they hadn't been marked up, either. Concerning Item 2: It's quite possible that a college radio station would have dumped it already, if they're half as indie elitist as WHPK is. There are a lot of DJs there who probably don't even know who Robyn Hitchcock is and if they do, think he's an old sellout. Don't argue with ME, I'M not the one who said it, I'm just trying to describe the majority mindset at one college station. Love on ya, Susan P.S. The release date was, as far as I knew, 2nd Nov; I asked in HMV Oxford Street, another HMV and Tower Records at Picadilly Circus, and also checked around the Soho record stores. HMV Oxford Street said it wasn't out till the 9th; Tower said it had been released on the 26th Oct but they'd run out of copies, and the other HMV had the 27th Oct on their computer (wrong as all releases are Monday), but had 9th down on an official release sheet. So I'm guessing the 9th. Other problem is, there is just no info at all about the vinyl - as far as HMV and Tower are concerned, it doesn't and will not exist! Is it any wonder why Robyn's popularity in this country is so poor? You can't even get hold of the new records! I did find the BBC Live at the Cambridge Folk Festival CD though. I haven't listened to it properly yet, but I did skip through the first few seconds of each track. The sound quality is dire, and the track listing printed is wrong. And Robyn's little story in the liner notes is pretty naff. I'll give it a proper listen today (I also got the John Lennon anthology and Dylan Bootleg Series 4 which take precedence), but I don't hold out much hope... Finally, I found another CD in one of the Soho shops, just titled "Robyn Hitchcock". It's basically a compilation of various songs (some Egyptians, some solo) from the A&M period, but with the addition of Statue With A Walkman at the end. Now apparently it's a Sequel release, and it didn't mention anything about being a promo. Anyone know anything about this album? Gary PS Haven't heard anything about Fish Gloss for ages. Less than impressed, maybe it will grow on me. I do like the Alright Yeah with Tim though. Have not had time to go through the Vinyl yet--too much stuff on top of my turntable. I am not fully keen on the graphic design for the two. The photos with cars in them look way too situated for the late nineties. They should have got some trashy looking old cars rather than the street scene as it was. And what the hell is the deal with the guy in the window on the vinyl version holding the poster of some guy with a cat?? Also, is that new logo in the corners of both--the one with the tomato--mean anything? A new logo or is there a story behind it?? Sorry if that has been asked, I removed a ton of messages when I came back in the most rapid of fashions. (2) Picked up a copy of "The Golden Prince Rides Again." Very rough photocopy of various clippings and promo stuff in a folded, 8X11 format. Overall, a passable item, but if your in collectorscum mode you might want it. It was created by our own (or at last he was around years ago, lurking still??) Carl Spiffingly et al. There is some interesting stuff, but most of the major content has been dished out on the list before. (3) Henry at Open Mind music commented to me that he was trying to get Robyn to do an instore at his shop. He mentioned that hopefully this would happen around the next time of Bob's next show, but could offer nothing conclusive--he was still working the angle, so to speak. (4) Picked up a vinyl copy of a Robyn show labeled as "Washington 3.28.98." This was put out on Feg You Records with no date of release, but I assume that it was of late eighties vintage. It features what claims to be a R. Crumb drawing on the front and a typical 86-ish photo of our man. Total of 11 tracks. I have not had the time to listen to it yet. Has anyone heard of this? Know the story behind it. (5) Finally, Ameoba on Haight has a few of the Vinyl left; Open Mind had a couple too. The Haight Ameoba had a slew of Robyn related used stuff--the mountain stage volume, a lot of A&M stuff, which everyone seems to be at a loss of find for odd reasons, and the Cambridge disc--plus a 3" cd of Balloon Man. Although, Rasputan's in Berkeley had the Cambridge for a couple bucks less. Open Mind has a stash of vinyl stuff that is pretty rare. .chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Nov 1998 12:52:18 -0500 (EST) From: Ken Sabatini Subject: lryic question; Was: Silencing the whiners (list meta)--last one. So for me, that should take care of most of the audio-only formats, since I got the cassette (3 different tracks) and Minidisc (5 different tracks) on Saturday, and yesterday I finally got the MusicChip[TM] version (17 different tracks, but noticeably compressed). But so far, I actually like the Victrola 78 rpm 10" version the best, even though it's actually *lacking* 7 songs from the CD; while it doesn't have quite the warm, scratchy "turn-of-the-century" quality of the original Edison Gramophone Cylinder version, it's close enough, and much longer - since as we all know, Edison cylinders are limited to only about 2-1/2 minutes. Luckily that was enough to fit "Uncorrected Personality Traits," which isn't on any of the other versions (at least not that I know of). I didn't like the biogelatinous datacube version much - too slimy in there, and no different tracks at all for some reason - but I was quite intrigued by the RCA wire-recorder offering, which has a whopping 32 extra tracks even though though there are only six players still in existence, four of which are in the Smithsonian. It's surprising that they chose to release such an item and totally ignore both the DAT and 7.5 ips reel-to-reel formats!
