The name OGWT was supposedly based on whether the old grey-haired commissionaire on the door at BBC-tv went out whistling a song from the prog or not. The Eagles appeared on a very early show playing 'Take it easy', which dates the start of the show back to the early 70s. For many years the chief DJ was Whispering Bob Harris, although I seem to remember Richard Williams popping up from time to time. Later, Mark Ellen took over, and in view of ME's known partiality to RH, it wouldn't surprise me if the RH performance appeared soon after ME began his stint. The original logo was a man made of stars kicking a big star. The theme tune was by Charlie McCoy and Kenny Buttrey, I think, and all UK harmonica players of a certain age will play it for you - don't know what it's called, though. This post is a little late, but since I brought it up in the first place let me add a few things and then be done with it. First off, I personally (if anyone cares) am content with the list as it is. It ain't always easy to keep up with the volume, but I'm surprised at how many doses of entertainment and information I regularly get out of it, with the occasional nugget of wisdom. Said Susan: >First mind-I get annoyed by complaints about "non-content" because these >posts are in and of themselves non-content. If things aren't interesting, >well, this isn't exactly helping. PS I hate you.," while at other times it could just be a simple statement of opinion from one of a thousand faceless fegs. >I also get annoyed when someone says "you guys are boring me, talk about >things which interest me, NOW!". As if this one post is going to MAKE >everyone change their posting habits- "that'll show em!". That's kind of what I just said above. :) Agreed. >I'm also a big advocate of lurking around, listening in, and figuring out >how things are done in Rome before you start pointing out to the Romans >what you don't like about their city. I often (not all the time) get the >impression that people who are complaining haven't done this. This almost gets at another issue. The issue of *when* people become bona fide feglist members and get the accompanying right of complaint. Are they members once they sign up and get confirmed (not in the religious sense) by woj OR does it really take some period of dues paying? In theory, if 100 new people all joined the list at the same time and all wanted only Robyn talk, then the current active members may be in the minority. (But if this is really an oligarchy, then that's besides the point.) I don't know what my point is here. Something to do with the status quo, I guess. Right now the culture of this list is ____, but its possible and likely that it will change over time. People who complain shouldn't necessarily be shat upon; rather, lets just say something like "Suggestion/Complaint acknowledged. PS I hate you." Well, I got my CD copy of "Storefront Hitchcock" over the weekend. I've played it a couple of times and... 1. The credits list track 11 as "The Yip! Song". My copy of Respect simply lists the track as "The Yip Song". I suspect errant punctuational empahsis has migrated from the Feglist to the credits on my CD. It's a plauge, I suspect, most likely perpitrated by our dopplelganger for Roger Jackson. But I'm too clever for him by half. I know now "Roger" is really William Safire. 2. The solo at the end of "I'm Only You" can go. It's long, annoying, and seems to have an uncomfortable key change. Argh. If there's a version on the vinyl, I hope it's from the other set and that it's better. 3. The talkie bits between the songs wore thin after the first spin. I skip 'em. I'll probably make a tape of the tunes and put the disc on the shelf. 4. I was glad that some of the tunes that were so decidedly English like, "No I Don't Remember Guilford" (good thing too) or "1974" were included for the US release. They're great songs. Same goes for "The Wind Cries Mary". I saw Robyn do that tune in Evershot three years ago and I've been waiting to hear him do it ever since! 5. Mark pointed out how Robyn's improved technically as a solo artist-- playing on the beat, singing on key, etc. I agree. "Glass Hotel" has never sounded better. His voice is still kinda thin, but it works for him now instead of against him. 6. Geeky guitar thing: anyone know what model Martin Robyn's playing? That don't look like no regular dreadnaught to me. 7. "Where Do You Go When You Die?" YAWN. I think Robyn's tapped this vein pretty deeply. But that's just me. SKIP. I would have preferred "Jewels For Sophia" or "I Feel Beautiful". Overall, I dug the disc. It's not quite a soundtrack album and it's not quite a live album. But it is a lot of fun and I like jamming along badly with it. I can't score it cos I don't score discs really well. It'll stay in my collection, that's for sure... Now... on the other hand... I got a copy of Glass Flesh I and it's amazing! I was expecting that it'd be a fun listen-- something I could yank off the shelf every so often and give a spin, but I was shocked! It's got such VARIETY on it! Even the tunes that use the same arrangements like "Love" or "Serpent At The Gates Of Wisdom", have the performer's personality or personalities-- the songs aren't just Robyn Xeroxes. Even the wacked-out "Balloon Man" was great. (Remided me of the Jon Stapleton sampling/rekkid scratching work he did while he was in The Blue Aeroplanes.) All of the organisers and contributers have done brilliantly and everyone should be quite proud of their work and the result. Thanks for taking the time. I was Chef at my buddy's Halloween party. It was OK, with two exceptions: I kept leaning on things and smearing my black makeup on the walls of my buddy's house. Since they're still in the process of redecorating their new home, it's not _so_ bad. Secondly, I kept worrying that we were gonna get done for speeding (my friends and I had to drive to the northern suburbs of Chicago for the party), and the State Patrolman would be black. Further, I'd have to launch into a Chef tune just to convince the officer that I wasn't taking the piss, I was a cartoon character. Fortunately, my friends would have been delighted to provide backing vocals, so at least I wouldn't be alone when I went to jail. However, I managed to elude detection and made it to the party and back again. I was a pink human being by 3.00AM. The things I worry about. I would rather have JFS, but I think it's cool that Robyn would play a song that he knows I'm not wild about. Maybe that's his only chance. I need to dig through my tapes and see if I have "I Feel Beautiful." >Now... on the other hand... I got a copy of Glass Flesh I and it's amazing! >I was expecting that it'd be a fun listen-- something I could yank off the >shelf every so often and give a spin, but I was shocked! It's got such >VARIETY on it! Even the tunes that use the same arrangements like "Love" >or "Serpent At The Gates Of Wisdom", have the performer's personality or >personalities-- the songs aren't just Robyn Xeroxes. Even the wacked-out >"Balloon Man" was great. (Remided me of the Jon Stapleton sampling/rekkid >scratching work he did while he was in The Blue Aeroplanes.) All of the >organisers and contributers have done brilliantly and everyone should be >quite proud of their work and the result. Thanks for taking the time. Glass Flesh! is one of my favorite CDs. I think everybody should buy one. And, hey, isn't the gift-purchasing season almost upon us? "There's nothing wrong with capitalism" -Oingo Boingo "Capitalism Blows" -Eddie Tews "Well, apart from that..." -D. Elfman Hope all your candy is razor-free, - -Markg ps. Let me know if you want to buy a Glass Flesh! (tribute to Robyn Hitchcock by his fans) or just want to know about it. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V7 #413 *******************************
