Well, the prevailing opinions are: 1) Yes, I enjoy lots of entirely derivative albums or 2) No. I just like them because I've got no idea what 'derivative' is. I'd say that Herman's Hermits were more derivative of The Monkees than The Monkees were of The Beatles, musically. (Or that every Chicago song is essentially derived from The Beach Boys' "Darlin'"). I say that it can. Witness early Bloom County. Derivative of Doonesbury but still pretty good. Some say the same of Liberty Meadows/Bloom County. So I'd probably have to say that #2 is right. Aloha. I don't think the price below's that bad. My advice is, though, that you go for the higher speed burner. WARNING: the following isn't the most technical of discourses, but will probably be boring if you're not looking into a CD burner... First a bit of explanation: Where I work we burn a lot of CDs in the course of software development. I work on a G3 (Mac) and have a series of SCSI burners that plug and play with my machine. The majority of the CDs I do are Mac-only as they're for internal use, but quite often near the end of the development process we kick out hybrid (cross-platform) discs. While I haven't played around with trying to make an audio disc yet I plan on buying a burner for home (and a slightly better sound card) as I want to do digital copies from my Minidisc onto my machine. There is a slight trade off with burners that I've found. I don't remember ever having seen one that records higher than 4x (most are 2 or 4x), but the time difference between burning at 2x and burning at 4x is--believe it or not--about DOUBLE (...go figure....mastery of that stat plus knowing that 40% of all sick days fall on Mondays and Fridays should qualify anyone for management...). When you're talking about a small data-lite disc that's not a problem, but when you've got one or more 650mb discs it can be a nuisance. I haven't seen a machine capable of multitasking ANYTHING while burning a CD and when you're talking about 20 minutes to burn a disc at 2x vs. 11 or so on a faster burner, the quicker is the one to choose. The downside? In the year or so I've been doing this I've had to throw away maybe three discs because they burned with an internal error. One of those was when I hit the burner while it was cooking, probably misaligning the laser, but the others were genuine problems with the burn. Occasionally the high speed burners (just like a high-speed cd ROM drive) can drop information because it's going too fast. I've had people contest that the hardware can do it, but I've seen it first hand where we've had to install software two or three times because the 32x CD-ROM was crap and dropped info packets like crazy. All the 4x burners we have here can dumb-down to 2x. As far as doing cd to cd copies: the only way I know of doing that (at least with the software we use--Adaptec CD Toaster--) is to do a SCSI copy where both the burner and the CD ROM are SCSI devices; a real bummer with my G3 as the CD ROM is IDE. Otherwise it's a matter of copying the files to your HD, then burning them back onto a CD which not only takes up space on your HD (as much as 650mb), but also takes time. Anyway, enough of that crap. If it's helpful, good luck. If not, then I'm sorry you didn't skip all of this. - -f. __________________ F. S.
