Speaking of which, the date for the Chicago Feggathering has been settled. Saturday,October 17th is the exalted day. Start accumulating those frequent flyer miles now :). If you're planning to attend, let me know, so I get an idea of how large the mongol hordes will actually be. And again, if you wish to claim sleeping space, definitely let me know soonish rather than laterish. Love on ya, Susan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 01:53:57 -0600 From: amadain Subject: small postscript about Bo Diddley Eddie, the lyrics you transcribed as "Willie and the Hand Jive" are from "Bo Diddley" by, er, Bo Diddley. Some of them anyway- the "Dig your house and paint your ears" and "Turn your collar and wear your friends" lyrics are Robyn interpolations. There are a few minor mistakes in your transcription otherwise but I don't know if you misheard the tape or if (since this was pretty off the cuff) Robyn was singing not quite right lyrics and you were just transcribing what he said. The mixup with the titles is pretty understandable. Bo Diddley basically introduced that rhythm into the rock and roll vocabulary, leading to songs like "Willie and the Hand Jive" using that same rhythm. I believe "Hand Jive" was by Huey "Piano" Smith but I'm not completely certain just off the top of my head. Of course it was! It was those 'LEE' endings that muddled me. In England those sort of names always end in LEY, as in Hadley Wood and Lilley and Skinner. As an apology, I will shortly post the promised poem beginning 'There's a breathless hush in the close tonight'. I believe it's by Johnny Otis, who (of course) claims to have discovered the 'shave and a haircut - five cents' rhythm before Bo Diddley. Early to mid '50s, anyway, I suspect a bit earlier than Bo Diddley. English fans will remember the neat version by Cliff Richard and the Shadows, with the Shads harmonising "Bow be do-do" at the end of each line. - - Mike G. Of course, all of this is moot if I decide to show up. I'm still not ruling that out. Dammit, James Dignan, you're just too clever for us naughty people! And who did Townshend work with on the "White City" album??? >Dave Gilmour!!! It's all a conspiracy I tell you! Okay, so I might as well admit it: Barney the Dinosaur and Dave Gilmour are, in fact, the same dinosaur. So as you've already guessed, "Barney and Friends" is simply another vehicle for funneling messages to D Sharpe. Apparently Dave wasn't happy about the fact that Pink Floyd albums only come out once every 2-3 years or so - he felt it was important to get messages out to her on a daily basis... It's all fiendishly clever, if you ask me. And I know it sounds incredible, but certainly you can't deny that Barney's and Dave's musical styles are uncannily similar. If you don't believe me, just compare the lyrics to "Happy Happy Nappy Time" and "Coming Back to Life" from The Division Bell. John H. Hedges III Still trying to get those damn "Jihad codes" right PS. Baby Bopp is actually Sting. PPS. Where's Graham Chapman in an Army Uniform when you really need him? PPPS. A subset of those who visited the Manse du Quail met again last weekend, this time in Virginia's mighty Blue Ridge. I thought some might be interested to read just a bit of what transpired and who attended. Also, Chris has some excellent photos, and more Quailparty photos too, so you should be seeing those at some point. The Cast of Characters - His Quailness. The Quail left a message saying when he'd be arriving, used his real name, then corrected himself, identifying himself as The Quail so I'd know who it was on the message. Quail is a really great guy. In fact sometimes I wonder if he should be renamed "The Great Guy." He's completely unassuming and friendly and outgoing. He knows no fear. He pronounces words very interestingly and differently. He has a bit of a Cthulu fixation, but it doesn't manifest itself in scary ways (usually.) He can catch frogs like a mofo! (more on that later.) He has loads of curly brown hair. He likes a lot of music and doesn't mind if you make fun of the bad stuff. People joke that the Quail invented a lot of the people on the list, but maybe it's the other way around. I can see elements of many people on the list, in the quail. Even he and Capuchin, the anti-quail, share a certain loquacity and joie de vivre. Scary Mary. I've known Mary for just years. Ever since I showed up late at a feg dinner at Tony Cheng's Mongolian Barbecue, before Robyn's last show at the old 9:30 Club, without the Robyn videos she'd loaned me via post. Mary does multimedia web design, but in a previous life she wrote docs for s/w (rumor has it she did the docs for Tomb Raider). She's really smart. She has a new look for autumn. Most importantly, she's just nuts about Halloween. (Mary, i'm sure you've noticed it's on a Saturday this year...) LJ. What can I say about LJ? You all know her. You all love her. She's even better in person. She made some excellent chili and "conebread" (that's not a robyn ref, just southern pronunsciation.) She brought two HUGE bottles of wine. She has a bunch of curly blonde hair. She's kind of like an angelic Shirley Temple who can give anyone shit and get away with it - in fact they like her even more. Chris Gross, aka "Mr Big." I posted in dc.housing about a month ago and about 4 minutes later I had an email from Chris saying "Bayard! is it really you? I need a place to live, bad!" Well he *must* have been desperate, cos he now lives in my decrepit haunted house. He's a great roommate. We're trying to figure out how to kick the other members of the group house out and get more fegs in there. He's not really as interested in squid as some rumors say. He does have a Cthulu coffee mug, though. Me. I guess I'd call myself a pretty normal guy. But you have to consider, how am i judging that? My father. He showed up after midnight coming back from a student faculty mixer in Harpers Ferry. He didn't want to intrude on our feggy gathering, though he can party with the best of them. Some have been known to think of him as an ex-hippie. The Quail got along with him really well. Gaia. My dad's black Lab. She was in 7th heaven! Lots of people giving her tons of attention, she got to sleep inside since I forgot to make her go out, I think someone even let her taste a beer! Jinx. A black Lab who lives next door, a couple miles away. Looks almost exactly like Gaia except for his collar and secondary sex characteristics. Most of us used the former method of identification... The Frogs! I have frogs living both inside and outside the house. Chris and I counted six - a new record - when we sat by the pond after the other humans had left. I love frogs. The Quail amazed us by communing with them. I think he hypnotized some of the younger ones. The big elders eluded him, for now. Things were added and taken from the FegBox. The Quail added to Eddie's gift. LJ gave me a scare when she started to get out of the hot tub on the side that's a sheer cliff. (It's not her fault - the controls *and* a handhold are on that side!) We went for a walk in the woods. We ate and drank. It went well. We agreed to do it again when it's cooler. Well hey- It's cooler *now*!.... =b ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 23:25:11 GMT From: dwdudic@erols.com (David W. Dudich) Subject: birdshead?
