Oh yes, this is a nice accomplishment for him but you know what? As nice as it is for athletes to break records and all that, I don't notice anyone giving great accolades to teachers who accomplish great things--like 40 yrs in the profession or the most graduates who go on to have solid careers--or to nurses who stick by their patients during wars or other disasters. We build up these guys and make heroes out of them but what about all the other people in the world who do great things? How many people remembered the anniversary of Mother Theresa's death? The news guy here said, "this is one of those moments when you'll always remember where you were when you saw or heard this." I wonder if he remembers where he was when she died? I'm not trying to put down McGuire's achievement, I just wish people in other professions, who are paid salaries that are about 50 times less than his, were equally recognized. MINIDISC is real cool. I have had the Sony 510 for almost 1 year and I have no regrets. In fact the MD has brought me only good fortune and large yield. You can get the 510 for less than $250 and previous model portable players from sharp or sony are going for about $100. They are well worth the investment. If I had a choice between an $800 low-end DAT and a $250 Sony 510, I would definately get the 510 and have money left for a portable player, and or recorder. The high-end portable player/recorder MDs are really cool. They are tiny, extremely powerful with lots of features, durable, sond very good and cost about $350-400. There are now lots of companies making the devices. Sony and Sharp probably have the biggest share, but there is also Kenwood, Awai plus a couple others. Check them out, they are worth considering. I'm not a sports fan -- far from it! -- but let's face it, no one, including me, wants to sit around in real time and watch a teacher graduate his 62nd straight-A teacher, or a doctor complete their 62nd successful diagnosis. That's what we have evening dramas for -- to fictionalize something that is essentially private, thereby making it universally symbolic and personally cathartic. As Lisa would say, to "embiggen" it. But athletics are a different kettle of fish. Sports is easily accessible, its sense of vicarious participation bestows a sense of community, and it can be quite exciting to watch both live and in recorded medium. So we shell out a lot of money to follow atheletes that give us this feeling, and the ones that embody integretity and fair play, we reward with our public praise. Wait! I'll agree with that - MD gives you the best of both worlds and I think my new MD recorder (Sony RZ30) is the coolest thing ever, but it really all boils down to two simple questions: 1. Do you have to record on location and/or in real time? (CD-R obviously can't.) 2. If so, do you have to be able to record for more than 74 minutes without interruption? (Only DAT can.) So if you tape a lot of live shows, DAT is still the way to go. For anything else, avoid it if you can - it's expensive and excessively fussy, in addition to being linear. For the cost of a DAT rig you could get an RZ30 and a decent CD-R unit, assuming you already have the necessary computer hardware in place for the CD-R... Prices on DAT recorders are dropping but very slowly; MD's are dropping slightly but may be close to bottoming out unless the medium becomes much more popular very quickly; CD-R's have already bottomed out pricewise on the low end (if you believe the "experts"). Another reason to go with DAT though, and maybe an even more compelling one (esp. for Deadheads), is that it was the first recordable digital format available to the tape-trader "community" so a lot of early adopters already have two decks for dubbing - along with some ludicrously enormous tape collections - and not that many of them seem too keen on switching to some other format. So despite northwest airlines' best efforts, i made it to the second great fegbash of 98. you know, i can't *remember* drinking that much, but parts are still hazy for me. Here are things that stand out: On the flight from Chicago to San Jose, I sat next to Al Bundy of TV's "Married with Children" fame. not the actor who played him, the actual guy. Capuchin was showing me the lyrics and something terrible happened. I remember Mark laughing... Someone called someone a dork. Early on in the visit, Mark said something funny about Jeme. Then during a car ride Jeme got him back real good. It was a festival of good-natured wisecracks. And no need to use the characters ":" "p" or ")". Someone even said i said something unkind, but don't you believe it. I'm sure it was several things. At the beach, I saw a sea lion, which was neat, and a big decaying fake ship, which kind of wasn't. Standing next to Chris is a humbling experience. It's true! people really do use vi. I can't believe it. And I learned what TWAIN stands for. I'd like to know who came up with that one. How can a simple little shed have 800 parts and a humungus instruction manual? The Santa Cruz area has maybe the best burritos in the world. Nick Winkworth is a gentleman and a charming chap. He claims he's a proggie, but I think his taste in music is exceedingly hip. He played us a new trip-hop disc I thought was really cool. Remind me of what it is so I can buy it. Dan Bern's first CD is quite something. Listen a couple times for yourself and see what all the fuss is about. Definitely a must-buy. If you tell me there's someone who can do a better George Bush than Mark or a better Hank Hill than Tom, I won't believe you. i saw my first episode of south park. Not bad, but Jeme and Mark do the comedy so well by themselves, it's hard for those primitive little characters to compare. BTW, I've decided rufus has Kenny's Pitch and Cartman's inflection. (no offense, of course.) (Zzzzzzz.) At some point in the visit, Jeme didn't have a yo-yo on him. Donne's potato salad was wonderful, and the selection of beers was super. Thanks go to Tom for the beer advice. Someone said fegs were nerds. I guess this means they're way smarter than normal people and are good at computers. I didn't see any pocket protectors or coke bottle glasses. Wow, Mark's friends are good at making music. I especially liked Karen's songs. They drew me into them by virtue of being very interesting, funny and well-played. As a performer she's endearing in her shyness. Mark did covers of "This must be the place" and "Anna Ng" that had people talking. They were really, really, really amazing. His own songs were also great even though I'd already heard them. Somefeg said he listens to _Monday's Lunch_ more than... I forget the whole quote, but it was very positive. Myself, I listen to it the way some people use oxygen. We got to talk to Terry AKA Terrence. He is an interesting fellow indeed. I really admire how he separates the list and real life. Someone could say to him "you only listen to three bands, and four of them suck," and he wouldn't even be fazed. If someone said something bad about the beach boys to me, it would be all-out WAR, man... I wanted to talk about Eb, but everyone else just said, "Ehhh." Eb, please send me your number so we can call you from my place. It's not fair that you only talk to chicks. It was good to hear some other viewpoints on the latest Glass Flesh stuph. But everyone agreed there is a good bit of top notch stuff already in for the next disc. And I happen to know there's more on the way. The Big Box O Stuff arrived just in time. Mark snagged all the best stuff. :) The Cheesi Poops got worshiped some more. LJ decorated the box with tons of cute stickers. Showing us her sweet feminine side? The sport confounds me as to how one should actually play it, not to mention how it is actually played. I show my students a video of cricket as played by the Trobriand Islanders. Now this is a different creature all together with cricket being the shell of the game, but by no means a reason for the game or any of the larger content. You see, these Trobrianders have adapted and turned around the colonial game and made it into something of their own all the while retaining its roots as a game played both to appease the colonists or other imperial types and a means to maintain their own cultural identity. But, I still do not think I will ever understand cricket in a practical "if-you-forced-me-to-play-it-and- make-me-not-mess-it-all-up" way. Don't batsmen get well over 62 each time they are at bat? Just one peripheral comment on the subject at hand- >(Concerning Led Zep and The Who, it's a Beatles and the Stones (and House >of Love?) comparison; apples and oranges (Pink Floyd? XTC?) - imho) To me that's exactly what makes this interesting. I've always thought that there were, I dunno, certain pairings that really tell you a lot about the aesthetic viewpoints of the person(s) debating them. A Beatles person tends to be very different from a Stones person. This is not to say of course that if you consider yourself a Beatles person you don't like the Stones at all, or vice versa, I'm thinking of cases where someone has a strong preference for one, not necessarily an aversion to the other (although in more pronounced incidences of this Beatles person/Stones person phenomenon, jeering at the er, opposing team, is not uncommon :)). That of course IS one of the classic examples, Fitzgerald/Hemingway is another. The fact that the two things being opposed ARE to some extent apples and oranges is what makes it telling- if we were talking say, Keats/Shelley, the answer would be interesting (to me at least) but not immediately as revealing. There are certain classic aesthetic polarities, artists who were working at a roughly similar time period but with different intentions/goals/whathaveyou, that do rate an interesting comparison simply because of the time confluence- a strongly expressed preference for one or the other is fairly telling. I think of it as not unlike sports fanship in a way, which is why the sports fan weenie stuff isn't bugging me :). This is often a TRIBAL thang as is sports. Those of you who would intelligently and rationally opine that "it's all the same thing" or "they all have something to offer" or even "it's apples and oranges" *grin* are to some extent missing this point- yes, I know that Hemingway is a fine writer also, but for the purposes of tribal loyalty I sometimes overlook that to cheer for my "home team" :).
