Dear Eb, This is to inform you of my intent to ignore any more conversations pertaining to the personal attacks on my intellectual capacity as well as my tastes in music. I feel that you are spending WAY too much time and attention on this matter and frankly, so am I... So, just for your personal information, I think that a detailed personal history of myself is in order... (for those of you on the feglist who have grown tired of this nonsense, please tune out now, unless you would like to get to know me better as well)... I was born in Wilmington, DE, 34 years ago in tenement housing. My mother raised the 5 of us (4 boys and 1 girl) by herself after my father left her. We relocated to Pottstown, PA in 1971, after she nearly killed her boyfriend in a "domestic dispute". As an escape from "reality", I started to collect records when my Aunt gave me a bunch of soul 45's that same year. In 73, my mother married an alcoholic, wife-beating lout of a man who sometimes felt like taking it out on us kids... Luckily, the music always set me free from his personal attacks... By 1980, thru osmosis from my older brothers, as well as an open mind, I've discovered groups like the Beatles, Funkadelic, Captain and Tennille, and whatever other things that were bouncing around on the top 40 stations... but my step-father would always rear his ugly head in my bliss, always admonishing my "taste in music" because he only listened to reggae and SKA music... So, by that time, I HATED anything with a carribean flavor to it, because it reminded me of HIM... In '81, we moved to Phoenix, and I discovered a whole new world of music via an old radio show broadcast Sunday nights from Apache Junction (outside of Phx)... this show played EVERYTHING and taught me that you label soup cans, not music... So I started to listen to everything... INCLUDING reggae and ska music and right when I was starting to really get into this great source of music, but my interest in school suffered because I had no friends because we relocated my senior year of high school... so my stepfather announced that I had 2 choices... become homeless or join the service... I chose the latter... without a high school diploma, but I earned my GED when I was in the service and learned to operate the ship's (USS Saratoga) radio station... but this happiness was short-lived when my best friend murdered his supervisor in front of me one night, because my friend wanted to transfer to my dept and the sup woudn't let him, even after he followed the procedure to the letter of the law... So, I became very depressed and gained lots of weight (80 pounds !) in 6 months... but the one thing that kept me going was my music... I had close to 700 cassettes at that time and listened to a lot of the radio... Finally, they let me go early (for being too fat) and I went back to Phoenix (in the interim, my mother dumped the drunk and started to get her life back together)... So, I remained in Phoenix until early '87 (but I got my associates degree in computer science in the meantime) and moved to Santa Rosa, CA to start a business (record store) there. By late '87, we had our store open... WeeBee's CD's and Stuff... our 3rd employee was none other than Mr. Oval Orafice himself, Glen Uber, then a scruffy 17 year old who needed a job... We hired him and we've been the best of friends ever since... But around mid '89, when the industry decided to go all digital, we couldn't afford to stay open, so I once again was set adrift... wondering what my next move was... I went into programming for awhile, as well as bookkeeping, but nothing seemed as satisfying as music... Well... Fast forward a few years (93) and while I was managing the Last Record Store - Records ! (BTW, these guys were my main competitors during my Weebee's years, but they knew that I knew more music than people twice my age, so they asked me to work for them - the greatest complement ANYONE has ever given me)... So I had a local radio station approach me after they read an article about my store to host a weekly radio program... I called it the Vinyl Resting Place after a store that I had brief fling with in the summer of '87... Glen and myself would play "anything and everything" from 64 - 84... some of the highlights are available on cassette from an ex-girlfriend who recorded every show... Man, we played ALL kinds of shit from bootleg Beatles recordings to Mr Robyn Hitchcock to underground soul music from obscure labels... Let's fast forward a few more years to the present... I am now the buyer for a major corporate chain of stores... I am proud of the fact that I had the best test score of ANYONE in Las Vegas on their test and that from the time the store opened in Aug of last year, I went from being the Jazz replenishment buyer ("just replace what sold, Cliff") to buying new Jazz releases and assuming the Classical/World/New Age/Gospel/Vocals/Oldies and special orders sections of the store... I should also mention that I've built and programmed this computer that i'm using to be told by a couple of complete strangers that I've never met, that I SUCK ???? I find this most humorous at best and kinda sad at the same time... The fact that I've personally helped thousands of people get reunited with the music that they loved is totally not important... that I helped a young Albino Brown who came to my store 10 years ago, asking about a Ska release that I had on my shelf because my stepfather used to listen to that album ALL of time because he wanted me to stop listening to my CRAPPY music... and that i listen to that same album now, because it doesn't remind me of good times... It reminds me of how far i've traveled and how i overcame adversity and just to have a guy like Eb tell me that because I choose to "dance with the devil in the pale moonlight" (Prince reference here - yes, gawdammit, I am also a Prince fan) instead of fearing him, that I should somehow feel guilty... Well Eb... FUCK YOU !!!! Thank you for being so patient with me, folks... I needed to vent... Mousestalker P.S. Eb, now that I got that off of my chest, can we at least try to be a bit more civil towards each other... I promised myself that I would no longer harbor any ill will towards anyone... including you... BTW, the Ska album that I "dance" in the moonlight to is "Intensified" a early ska collection released by Island records (their 2nd Lp release as a label) with songs like "El pussy cat", "Penny Reel", "Rocket Ship", and lots of other vintage ska... Each feg could add a link to 'fegLINK!' from their web pages and our feg ring would then be functional. I could also write another script which would allow future fegs to automagically add or update their information. The only problem would be folks who aren't fegs trying to link up. Well, making it a real ring would solve the problem. Just put the links in some particular order and let the person who hits the link off the fegLINK! homepage get a random starting point in the ring. This would also allow you to build a quick Skip 2 function like most rings have. This is so that if a link is broken, you can go back to the page you were on and hit the "skip 2" link and go to the page after the page they were just reading in the list. > I could also write another script which would allow future fegs to > automagically add or update their information. Well, you could add an "email" field to the form and check that email against the list. While woj has disabled global who commands for majordomo, you can still verify a single address if known. So you verify the email as a valid list email and then add it to the ring. This might even be a special case where woj could just give you a complete who list for comparison, but that would still require constant updating. Personally, i don't see any reason to automate it. I can't imagine there will be more than one added links a month or something. Perl help if you'd like it.
