[Bayard ] Re: West Coast Feg-O-Flex-Party-O-Rama 98 Part II [Tom Clark Subject: from MTV Here is more info on the "More Oar" album: R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, Mark Lanegan and Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Robyn Hitchcock and Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whig have signed on for a tribute to estranged musician Skip Spence, the original drummer for Jefferson Airplane and guitarist for Moby Grape. Organized by the same group that compiled the 1990 tribute to the ersatz Roky Erickson, "Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye," the new "More Oar" album is a planned track-by-track reworking of Spence's sole solo album, 1969's "Oar." Other artists that have agreed to contribute material include Son Volt's Jay Farrar with the Bottle Rockets, Alejandro Escovedo, Diesel Park West, Engine 54 and Flying Saucer Attack. "More Oar" will feature all 17 songs included on the 1993 reissue of "Oar," which supplemented the record's original 12 songs with five bonus tracks cut during the same sessions. Spence was one of the music scene's high profile acid casualties during the Summer of Love, and eventually checked himself into New York City's Bellevue hospital in 1968. After six months of confinement, Spence emerged from Bellevue and headed to Nashville, Tennessee, where he recorded "Oar" -- which is widely regarded as the first true solo album, as Spence wrote all the songs, played all the instruments and sang all the parts -- in a mere two days. According the executive producer for the Spence tribute, more artists are lining up new versions of songs for "More Oar", which is slated for release in February 1999, marking the 30th anniversary of the release of the original "Oar" album. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Griffith Davies hbrtv219@csun.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Aug 98 10:40:43 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: from MTV On 8/11/98 10:03 AM, griffith wrote: >R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, Mark Lanegan and Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, >Mudhoney, Robyn Hitchcock and Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whig have signed >on for a tribute to estranged musician Skip Spence, the original drummer >for Jefferson Airplane and guitarist for Moby Grape. Mutton Birds --> Caroline Lavelle --> Robyn Hitchcock so very easy! Caroline Lavelle played cello on The Mutton Birds "Envy Of Angels" and cello on "The Yip Song" and "The Wreck Of The Arthur Lee" but Caroline also links Robyn to tons of people - I'll just point out a few for my own amusement.... Robyn --> Caroline Lavelle --> William Orbit --> Madonna or is it - Madonna --> William Orbit --> Caroline Lavelle --> Robyn Hitchcock oh well - anyway... Caroline's first solo release was produced by William Orbit, as is apparently - Madonna's "Ray Of Light" album... Robyn --> Caroline --> Nigel Eaton --> Page and Plant Caroline and Nigel - {native Brits whom I still keep in touch with 'cause they are *really good people*} - both played on Loreena McKennitt's "Mummers' Dance", Nigel was the *Hurdy-Gurdy* player who had like a ten-minute solo on Page and Plant's last tour. When Nigel came to visit me in the hospital - he brought me *Travel Connect Four* - the same one he and Mr. Plant used to play with every day while on tour... Oops - I should mention I produced the video for "Mummers' Dance", so that's the reason I know Caroline and Nigel and Loreena. I could make further connections but I'm saddened {and sulking and depressed today anyway} that no one got the Mutton Birds/Robyn connection... Can't even go outside today - nor was I allowed yesterday, too humid. Grrrrgghh...Arrrrggghh - and I want to go to *sharkboy's* party - someone had better take lots of pics and send me a copy - pretty please - I'm always so curious to know what everyone looks like... This is very generous of Jeme, but I believe the standard trading practice is to compensate for postage. A dollar or two, or an extra tape, would not be frowned upon by me (or most [other] law enforcement authorities.) Postage from here to the mighty expanse that is canada is cheap, so either way it's fine as long as everyone is happy. (Remember, take care of your branch! You may send them anything you like - I myself got a quail self portrait and a sketch of a wild toaster by the Toast Goddess, and lots of nifty CD inserts from eddie. No tinfoil Eb yet, but I can't imagine it would look much different from my tinfoil David Hyde Pierce...) What I want to avoid is "2 for one trading" where the recipient is required by the taper to provide postage AND an extra tape (or more) for each tape they get. That is just a petty form of bootlegging, which you know I abhor (selling them, not buying them, though I myself do not buy them.) By the way Eddie, ignore that JH3 guy, DAT trading *IS* a p.i.t.a, and i don't mean bread. Not because of the return to the world of tape flips when coping to cassette, but because DAT is unreliable as all hell. This "widely regarded as the first solo album" sounds like a challenge to me. I've never heard of this record before - has anybody got a copy? The first solo album I ever heard was John Mayall's 'The blues alone' (1968?) where Mayall sings, songwrites, and plays keyboards, guitars and harmonica. But Keef Hartley plays the drums, and there might be one or two bit parts contributed by other people. The best song on it is 'Broken Wings', which was covered by the first incarnation of Atomic Rooster (the lineup with a flute player called Nick on lead vocals). 'McCartney' is virtually a solo album, but I think it features the late Linda on vocals and possibly songwriting. What date is it? 1970? Until today, I would have said that the first totally solo album was Steve Winwood's 'Arc of a diver', for which he taught himself to play drums, and also plays keyboards, bass, guitar etc. Much earlier, Winwood started 'John Barleycorn Must Die' as a solo project, but reformed Traffic during its recording, so it became a Traffic album. Obviously you can't count folk albums like 'Bert Jansch', where the performer just sings and plays the guitar, or albums of Chopin Etudes whacked out by a solo pianist. I guess there has to be evidence of overdubbing and multi-instrumentality. I have a feeling that Mike Oldfield actually recorded 'Tubular Bells' in an early form sometime before it was released, but I doubt that it dates back to 1969. Presumably TB is the biggest selling multi-instrumentalist solo album (if you don't disqualify it because of Viv Stanshall's brief voice-over). There must be some other contenders - suggestions? - - Mike Godwin PS Erratum: on the subject of John Mayall, I claimed that 'John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton' was released in 1965. In fact, because of the lethargy of the Decca Record Company, it wasn't actually released until 1966, after Clapton had joined the Cream in July. It was either recorded late in 1965 or very early in 1966. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 12:37:51 -0400 (EDT) From: Bayard Subject: Jeme: do not read the subject of my last post. jaysis.
