I thought "Sunburnt" was pretty good - not great, but not as disappointing as everyone else seems to think. "Soft Bomb" was my introduction to the Chills - "Ocean Ocean" just blows me away every time I hear it - but I think the album is a little too long. "Submarine Bells," however, will always be my favorite - one of my favorite albums of all time, in fact. "Heavenly Pop Hit" is, as its title implies, truly divine. I didn't care for "Kaleidescope World" all that much, but maybe that's because I had already gotten used to the shiny pop of later Chills. So I went on a quest for more Kiwi pop this weekend - I bought some kiwi jam instead, which gummed up my CD player something awful. But then I bought "The Law of Things" by the Bats, which is pretty good so far (I haven't listened to the whole thing yet). It reminds me of a more punky Chills, and for some reason I hear a bit of Smiths in there as well. (Just in the music, not in the vocals, thank god!) I like the lyrics, too. I heard the Tall Dwarfs a few years ago, when I was living in England. A friend played them on a long car trip, and I still associate them with getting lost somewhere near Lord Byron's ancestral home. I thought they were weird. I guess they are, as James says, an acquired taste. n. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 09:09:24 -0400 From: Natalie Jacobs Subject: I have too much time on my hands >Robyn Connection - The Chills do a hauntingly beautiful version of Draft >Morning on the same Byrds tribute album that features Nigel and the Crosses >performing Wild Mountain Thyme. The only vocal sound that I can think of which resembles original Nirvana is the very early Bee Gees. Did they perhaps do a song called 'And the sun will shine'? Here is the complete annotated list of NZ albums I own: The Bats -- The Law Of Things The Bats -- Fear Of God I LOVE THE BATS!!! This is very pop (most applicable rock-crit adjective: "winsome"). If you have a high lo-fi tolerance, go get _The Law Of Things_. I like _Fear Of God_ slightly better -- perhaps it's just my bias that I think fear of God is a good thing to get in general... ;-) No, really, just good tunes, from (imho) the best singer among the Clean. The Chills -- Submarine Bells The Chills -- Soft Bomb Both are bee-yoo-tee-full. Contrary to all other Chills appreciators I've talked with, though, I like _Soft Bomb_ best. I'm a big sucker for slightly overwrought thematically-threaded albums, and _Soft Bomb_ definitely is one of those, but with way better songwriting than usual for that format. The Clean -- Vehicle The Clean -- Modern Rock I don't know what my problem was, but I heard _Vehicle_ four years ago and didn't like it (probably I was picking on the occasional off-key vocal moments). I re-bought it on Friday, and woooooo! What a fine little record -- the songs are bright, welcoming little orange-slices! _Modern Rock_ is moodier and not as immediately appealing, but there are really good songs here too. Haven't bought _Unknown Country_ yet, but I will probably love it. Finn Brothers Split Enz -- True Colours Split Enz -- History Never Repeats Me love Finns. I never bought any Crowded House because I could count on hearing them on radio, but I'll rectify that situation soon (when I go buy the new Neil Finn solo rekkid). The JPS Experience -- Bleeding Star If you like shoegazer stuff (My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ride, etc.), do not miss this one. Big swirly guitar action, but with the kind of memorable songwriting that tends to elude this subgenre. Straitjacket Fits -- Melt Straitjacket Fits -- Blow These two albums are cool despite being on Arista! One of them even survives a Paul Fox production!! (OK, OK, I realize it's fun to make fun of Paul Fox productions -- we did that a lot in Michigan -- but I have a weakness for them, I must confess) _Melt_ is the better of the two, though, because of the presence of two writers with distinct but complementary styles in one band. These two (particularly _Blow_) show up in cutout bins a LOT, so don't pay too much for them. The 3Ds -- Fish Tales / Swarthy Songs For Swabs A CD compilation of their first two EPs. I haven't given this a really focused listen yet, but it's definitely a noisier flavor of kiwi, more like what Yanks would call "indie". I like! _The Trouser Press Guide_ compares the sound to Pavement, but I don't get annoyed with the 3Ds the way I do by Malkmus occasionally. There are some similarities in the guitar playing and such, though. Occasionally brutally pretentious ("The Ball Of Purple Cotton") -- which is not a cardinal sin for me (no!) but would irritate some. The Verlaines -- Bird Dog This is earlier stuff; I didn't really get into _Way Out Where,_ their much loved '96 release. I found it a little too bombastic and earnest for my taste, though it showed obvious skill and power. I find _Bird Dog_ utterly charming, though! They make very good use of horns, particularly in the opener ("Makes No Difference", which sets the album's mood like "Reel Around The Fountain" does, only with more interesting chord changes and the foggy flugelhorn) and the closer ("C.D. Jimmy Jazz & Me," which has a scope that for some reason makes me think of "Jungleland"). Must... get... _Juvenalia_....... Letting out a big wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
