Okay, JH3 loves *Sunburnt* - Eb dislikes it... Anyone else like to *chime* in with their comments? {that's the best wisecrack I could come up with JH3 ;} Anyone like to trade a tape of *Sunburnt* for something cool like - *The Mabuses* - all in this Globe O' Fegs *must* hear this music - it is just plain amazing - I can't imagine a Robyn fan *not* liking it... Btw - was *Sunburnt* released on Flying Nun? I called some record stores in T.O. and they don't carry it - so is it a UK import or did it come out on another label in the States? All help appreciated as usual - and I will listen to *Submarine Bells* tonight for you Eb, but it might remain my second fave Chills album - but I'm nostalgic that way... "Brave Words" introduced me to their music, obviously the first "Chills" album I ever purchased - just like "Fegmania" was the first RH album I ever bought...and I'll always be nostalgic for it. {I'd heard Soft Boys before that - they played the hell out of "Old Pervert" on T.O. radio...but I relied on the kindness of my friend Tim - who taped all the Soft Boys stuff and early Robyn for me.} "Fegmania" was my first Robyn purchase - and for that reason - it holds a special place in my heart - G-d, I bought it when it came out - that's like 13/14 years ago...I feel old... Hey, I wouldn't feel so old if I were you... Obscured by Clouds came out after the Meddle tour which I was lucky to see at the Hollywood Bowl in '71. And I was somewhere in my early teens then (but enjoying pshycadelics already which worked for Meddle, particulary)! Have never seen the film that Obscured by Clouds was music for, but still spin that old one every once in a while. Thanks for reminding me. Are there more developments? Last I heard he wanted to start releasing things through the fan club (old rare Chills, etc.) and only do a real album when he had money. Whether this is because fan club members will accept records with cheap packaging, or he's planning to charge for being on the club mailing list or what, I don't know. Sunburnt is my least favorite Chills record as well. I think it came out on Flying Nun US and was licensed all over the place, which would explain the lack of it in Toronto. Not sure. And speaking of which, why isn't Flying Nun giving Martin some cash to record an album? It beats me, but I have a funny feeling that the label's glory days are over, what with the closure of the US office, and the Australian Mushroom takeover and all... I really haven't seen *that* much exciting new FN stuff released lately, especially when you compare the trickle of often mediocre albums (Chris Matthews, you done me wrong) to all those fab EPs released in the 80s and even early 90s. Ah, for the halcyon days of the Dunedin Double. (Which I'd love to find a decent copy of, incidentally.) I dunno. Maybe I'm getting old and cranky. Not that it's a big deal or anything, but I actually liked "Submarine Bells" better than "Sunburnt" as well. Most Chills fans you talk to probably will, I should think... I guess it's more a case of 1997 being kind of slow year - other than "Sunburnt", "Moss Elixir", Catherine Wheel's "Adam & Eve", and a rather obscure CD called "Lemonade Stand Still Life" from a band called The Bees that everyone should get a copy of before JudeHayden@aol.com runs out of them, there really wasn't much new that came out last year that I was really impressed by. Guy Chadwick's album was pretty good... (though I got that one this year). I guess I just didn't hear enough new stuff. I do think 1998 is shaping up a lot better, even though XTC is waiting for January 1999 for their new album. And hey, I just saw the Jerry Seinfeld special and he actually did some EQUINE HUMOR! Two requests within a couple of weeks means this goes to the list! sigh - you asked, you get! Here's a small list for you: Bats - Daddy's Highway is probably the best, although it's a close call. "Couchmaster" and "Law of Things" are also worthwhile Chills - Apart from Submarine Bells I'd recommend "Brave Words" and the compilation of early material "Kaleidoscope world" Tall Dwarfs are an acquired taste, but "Weeville" and "Fork Songs" are probably the best, along with some of Chris Knox's solo work, such as "Seizure" and "Croaker" Others: Clean "Unknown Country", "Compilation" David Kilgour "Sugar Mouth", "David Kilgour & the Heavy Eights" Verlaines "Way out where" "Over the moon" Straitjacket Fits "Melt" Bike "Take in the sun" Jean Paul Sartre Experience "Bleeding Star" Able Tasmans "A cuppa tea and a lie down" Shihad "Shihad" for a more commercial but still excellent sound, add the following: Dave Dobbyn "Lament for the numb" Greg Johnson "Everyday distortions", "Chinese whispers" Strawpeople "Vicarious" Headless Chickens "Bodyblow" Muttonbirds "Muttonbirds", "Envy of angels" Jenny Morris "Honeychild" for something more reggae, find Herbs' "Sensitive to a smile" For boucy yet fun rap, try Supergroove's "Tractor" or Dark Tower's "Real Zealmen" I recommend starting with the David Kilgour or Straitjacket Fits James James Dignan___________________________________ You talk to me Deptmt of Psychology, Otago University As if from a distance ya zhivu v' 50 Norfolk Street And I reply. . . . . . . . . . (2% RH) Chills info: firstly, I haven't heard any more about Martin's current work, but I think he is, as Danielle said, still waiting for the cash. Chills albums: Kaleidoscope World - a compilation of early singles and EPs Brave Words Submarine Bells Soft Bomb Heavenly Pop Hits - a best of compilation containing singles b-sides as well. Early pressings have a bonus disc containing several remixes/rerecordings plus the beautiful but little known Green Eyed Owl Sunburnt - recorded as "Martin Phillipps and the Chills", but actually largely (due to visa problems - it was recorded in the UK - Martin plus session musicians (including various members of XTC). There were a couple of singles (with non album b-sides) but it wasn't a successful album. MP was also involved in the Pop Art Toasters, who did one CDEP of cover versions, and he is currently working with David Kilgour as a member of the Heavy Eights (see earliermessage about Kiwi music recommendations). I think this is just a part time project to get enough money together for more recording. They do a wicked version of "Autobahn" live! Robyn Connection - The Chills do a hauntingly beautiful version of Draft Morning on the same Byrds tribute album that features Nigel and the Crosses performing Wild Mountain Thyme. James Connection - I supported DK & the heavy eights at Otago University orientation in March. The Moomins used to have practice rooms in the same building as the Chills back in the late 80s (Vogel House, Vogel St, Dunedin, run by the infamous Mrs Brown) more info available on request, but this is probably all the list in general can stomach for now! No one's flamed me for doing it yet, but I suspect someone might if I keep it up. My love for Robyn has waned a bit lately, and my fandom of Dan Bern is on the rise. Dan Bern is like the Robyn I first got into; that is, the setlists were all completely different, there were a ton of songs that you knew you might never hear him do again, and especially not on a regular studio release. And the studio releases came fast and furious--at least one per year since 1985. Now, Robyn writes about one song a month, and the albums come out every 2 years. Dan writes about a song per day, and look at the stats from his recent tour! Long live Dan. I'm not saying that Robyn is completely off my musical radar, just that I'm getting that fix from Dan now that I used to get from Robyn. Eddie, can you relate??
