I know this comes up fairly often . . . and I should've been taking notes . . . but you know how things go. So, I'm currently listening to the Bats' "Daddy's Highway," which is quite good. I recently heard that Tall Dwarfs compilation of early EP's, which was interesting, but not quite straightforwardly "poppy" enough for what I'm looking for. The Chills' "Submarine Bells" is one of my absolute favorite albums of all-time. So, that's what I know. Rumour had it that he was an ex student of Cal Poly SLO, Architecture Major. The rumour also went on that it was in one of the stalls in the men's bathroom in one the dorms that he recorded the demo for "Another One Rides The Bus". This could all be bullshit, but this is what I've been told. One summer afternoon (summer of 1991 - shit has it really been that long ago?), a fellow dormatory dweller and I headed down to the cafeteria ("The Stalls") for dinner. Walking towards us are a man and a woman. Didn't really notice the woman, but the man sure looked strange. He had dark curly (permed) hair, glasses, and a mustache. He was also wearing some black pants, a loud Hawaiian print shirt (aren't they all loud?), and some slip on Vans. As we approached, my friend said hey, that guy looks like weird Al. Just as he finished saying that, Al looked up at us - - sure enough, it was him. We said hey, and he said hey, and we all went on about our business. Of course nobody believed we saw Weird Al Yankovic walking across the campus. If the rumours are true, Al & I have a common bond: We were both dismissed from Cal Poly (SLO) for academic reasons. I'm not too proud of either....here it is 7 years later, and I'm still trying to graduate from college..... now I'm depressed.... griffith = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Griffith Davies hbrtv219@csun.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Aug 1998 18:53:57 -0700 From: Eb Subject: attn Fibbers fans From AllStar (www.allstarmag.com) news: EX-GERALDINE FIBBERS SET TO DEBUT SCARNELLA ALBUM Scarnella, the latest in the seemingly endless list of Geraldine Fibbers side projects, are putting the finishing touches on their self- titled, self- produced debut for Smells Like Records -- the label run by Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth -- tentatively slated for a fall release. The band, made up of Geraldine Fibbers members Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline, formed shortly after the Fibbers were dropped by Virgin at the end of 1997. They insist, however, that the Fibbers are only on "extended hiatus," and will eventually record another album. Scarnella first appeared with the song "Hot Pants" on Super Bad @ 65: A Tribute to James Brown, released by Zero Hour in May (allstar, March 25). But aside from a few scattered shows in the Northwest just prior to recording, the album will be the first chance for most fans to hear original material from the band. They will be playing their first Los Angeles- area shows on Aug. 12 at the Long Beach Museum of Art with Steve Malkmus of Pavement and Hot Tinkle, and Aug. 13 at Mr. T's Bowl in Los Angeles with Malkmus and the And Now Ensemble. Bozulich and Cline headed to Seattle to record the album for Shelley's label the day after Destroy All Nels Cline, the six-piece instrumental band which includes both Bozulich and Cline, made their live debut opening for Shelley and the rest of Sonic Youth in Los Angeles. They wrote much of the material during the trip and while in the studio, and recorded the album in only six days. The 10-song album is a "real good blend of Nels' more exploratory, loose style and Carla's songwriterly [abilities]," says Smells Like Records publicist Carlos Hammerstein. He adds that "each is into what the other does well," making for nearly an hour of music filled with both improvisation and hooks. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Aug 1998 22:28:42 -0400 (EDT) From: Gary Assassin Subject: Re: My Weird Al Meeting > Rumour had it that he was an ex student of Cal Poly SLO, Architecture > Major. I'm sure that a keen tunesmith like Robyn Hitchcock must be an Abba fan - you only have to look at Eleanore's photo of the maestro to see the resemblance to Muriel (of Wedding fame). I have been listening seriously to a fair old chunk of Abba numbers recently, and I think that the main reason people don't like them is that they have no quality control whatsoever. They come up with wondrous tunes like 'One of Us' or 'The winner takes it all' (with its counter-melody apparently taken from 'Merry Xmas - War is Over'), and then follow them up with trash like 'Money money money', or that diabolical 'puppets' routine from 'Abba - the Movie' Thus for every 'Knowing Me Knowing You'-type ying tune, there is an opposing, deeply banal 'Fernando'-type yang tune, thus ensuring that the countervailing forces of quality and garbage _exactly balance each other out_. And I tell you another thing - Abba show up all these Zappa vs Garcia debates in a completely different light. I think I approach Abba from a different angle than Mike, though -- I like to listen to Abba *expecting* to hear pointlessly-vapid-bubblegum-disco. And that's exactly what you get! For me, it's a bonus that a fair amount of these songs happen to actually be done really well. So, Mike, see if you can shift your perspective slightly.
