I have two friends who lived down the hall from Wierd Al in college. Interestingly enough, they were roommates and have names that are unbelievably unusual. They said he was called that then, 'cause he was a weird guy. This wasn't long before his accordion made him such a household name. Another friend of mine, Karen Stern, managed to get a tape of her "comedy jazz" to W.A.Yankovic. He called her back within a week and left a glowing message on her phone machine about her songs. The band I miss the most is Oingo Boingo. For me, I already missed them before they broke up, since the touring band had been cut down to a hornless setup (their last shows included horns, but my tickets didn't happen.) I suppose some holy resurrection of Frank Zappa would be nice too. I guess that's a lot like wishing progressive rock would have continued to progress. For me, King Crimson is the only purveyor of proggage that kept moving in any forward direction. Yea, they miss me entirely sometimes, but when they hit, they really hit. Luckily they keep reforming in the void that they leave when they break up. I would like the Smiths, the Ramones, and, of course, The Banana Splits to come back bigger than ever. Happies, - -Markg ps. Did anybody ever listen to the old Pere Ubu? A friend of mine bought New Picnic Time when it came out, and I've bought it twice on vinyl and once on CD. I really like it. They were so weird and dynamic and artistic, that it is kind of hard for me to get into the new P.U. They were the quintessential "avant garage" band. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Aug 1998 21:30:08 +0000 From: Eleanore Adams Subject: Re: fegparty show of hands... I would like to go! Actually, that's just what we *want* you to think, so you'll feel sorry for us and send even cooler stuff. But most DAT recorders now have timers and seek buttons and remote controls and everything, so that makes it a bit easier. And speaking of what we want you to think... >wow. interesting concept: "*used to* declassify records at the >national archives." i'd think they'd just, you know, incinerate >you when you decide you don't want to work there anymore. i mean, >you've seen everthing! you've seen the Big Board! Aaah, if I only had a nickel for every time someone tried to incinerate me... but I think you're confusing the National Archives (NARA) with one of those agencies that has *money*. At NARA the "big board" is made out of old newspapers glued together that still have bird-poop stains on them. But it was all we had to sit on during coffee breaks. I think they tried to order a new one off the back of a Cheez Whiz can once, but there wasn't enough in the budget for that AND new batteries for the reading lamp. Really, though, nothing of real interest ever makes it to NARA. Everything that would put the US in a really bad light stays in the hands of... OTHER AGENCIES. Sorry! The one thing NARA is supposed to get that's usually of interest is Presidential papers - but we know what the Reagan White House did with their secret stuff, and when the Bush Administration was prevented from doing the same thing, ol' George practically bribed the then-Archivist, Don Wilson, with a non-appointee job as head of the Bush Library project (same pay, much less work) in return for agreeing not to release the stuff at all for, I dunno, 15 years I think. The day before he left office! IIRC the issue's *still* in court... >also, maybe you can answer this, john. i've often wondered why >they bother declassifying at all (actually, clinton has made >noises in this direction. Hmmm. I happen to believe that it's possible to release once-classified stuff with huge numbers of black marks in it and still have it be sort of useful to historians; that's mostly who we were concerned with. But obviously it's not very newsworthy after that, and the black marks often have the opposite of the desired effect by leaving things to the imagination that are usually not all that earth-shaking. (Oooh, the CIA didn't always operate within our own borders? What a shock!) I guess my take on it is that the whole secrets system is just more wasteful than anything else. It's just too easy to classify useless and mundane crap - all it takes is a guy with a rubber stamp who thinks what he's got is vastly more important than it actually is, and then 25 years later some underpaid grunt has to read a shitload of boring economic reports that go on forever, costing taxpayers oodles of money in the process. Basically they should just limit the number of people with the rubber stamp. >clinton is just hands down the worst president ever on >civil liberties. But one of the best at taking liberties? (ba-da-boom) >...that is, i'd think it would actually be fairly easy to get >the foia overturned, and i'm kinda surprised it's not been >attempted. Naaah. Without FOIA (Freedom of Information Act, for you non-US fegs) there'd be nothing to help in paying lip service to the idea of open government, right? None of the really juicy stuff (not that it actually exists, mind you) ever even makes it into the hands of the declassifiers, so there's nothing for "them" to worry about. But in FOIA's defense, it was originally enacted to make it possible for people to get access to federal records about themselves personally, and it does at least help in that regard, within the ever-present limits. I'm afraid I'm just one of those people who, having worked for the gubbmint for a while, can't believe in the idea of massive leakproof federal conspiracies any more than I can believe in the tooth fairy's pet purple dinosaur. Most feds, even the spies and FBI agents, are just nice, ordinary, underpaid people. You'll find out for yourself, once you're in the hands of the proper thought-correction authorities. Ta ta! Fear not. Pat Boone, the `50s crooner with the white bucs, is joining the campaign for a smooth Fegmania. Boone is joining the Eb National Educational Taskforce (EbNET) to raise public awareness about the Bug. "I want to help bring Eb to the family dinner table for dialogue," said Boone, who brought black rhythm and blues to a white audience by recording Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti," and has recently recorded an album called "In A Metal Mood, No More Mr. Nice Guy." "Now it is time to begin discussing individual and community preparation for Eb-related problems." "I want to stress that I don't believe there is any reason to panic," the crooner said. To do his part in keeping America cool and calm, Boone has recorded the first in a series of public service announcements (PSAs) for radio broadcast offering free Eb information, called "EbCPR resources." The resources will include a 48-page special collector's edition of Eb News Magazine called "The Many Faces of Eb," and a free EbCPR audiotape of EbNET's recent Atlanta Roundtable with Ed Yourdon as the keynote. Free copies of EbCPR are available by calling EbNET toll-free at 877-4-EbCPR. Larger quantity reprints for civic, government, trade shows, educational seminars, mailing lists, or church groups, costing $0.20 each, are available by calling Eb News at 888/555-9925. Radio stations may download the 47 second Boone Eb PSA from http://www.ebnet.com or http://www.ebnews.com .
