There is always a huge budget for commercials and usually teeny ones for videos - at least the ones I work on... ;} And you know what - most of the artists themselves HATE doing the videos, they feel like idiots. That's where I'm good at helping, by saying stuff like - "Well, if this video sells a few thousand more copies of the album - you've gotta decide if it is worth it." The coolest thing about being a producer, and about the way I deal with people, is that the artist isn't afraid to come up to me and say - "I don't want to do this," {usually referring to a particular scene} and I get to talk to the director and the record company and management and say - "look - so and so are feeling really uncomfortable about this - if we film it anyway, we are just wasting film stock, 'cause it won't make the final cut." Thank G-d people listen to me - it's probably half being a woman, and half being completely honest...and a smidge of being me. I could get in big trouble for telling the truth - but I always say - "geez, relax, we are just filming a commercial for a song - it's not such a big deal." I don't want to go on about this, except to say - Eb, I am totally in agreement with your comments - I can't say it any better myself... Didn't bother to watch it myself. From what I can tell, nobody appears on a VH1 special unless they're trying to make a comeback. "Behind the Music" is terribly predictable - unless the subject is actually dead, you almost always hear the line, "after struggling for years with drugs, alcohol, and emotional difficulties, and finally hitting rock bottom, [INSERT NAME HERE] has triumphed over his/her personal demons and is now in the studio working on a new album." There weren't too many ideological/doctrinal differences between the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks (which makes sense, since they were both splinter groups of the same party, the Social Democrats). The Bolsheviks wanted the Social Democrats to be a group of professional revolutionaries, whereas the Mensheviks believed in more of a traditional political party. This was the issue that the SDs originally split over in 1903. As Marxists, both Bolsheviks and Mensheviks believed that capitalism had to precede socialism; but the Bolsheviks (Lenin, really) argued that a.) Russia was already partly capitalist, and that should suffice; and b.) regardless of its internal development of capitalism, Russia was part of an international capitalist system, and the revolution would spread throughout this system, etc. These were fairly small differences when compared to the whole body of Marxist dogma that both shared, but they led to major policy differences in 1917: the Mensheviks were willing to cooperate with other parties in an elective government, while the Bolsheviks as professional revolutionaries were dedicated to seizing all power. (However, for the first couple of years the Bolsheviks still ruled with other radical socialist parties, like the Mensheviks and the Socialist-Revolutionists, as junior partners.)
