Full marks for the title, rivalling Larry Wallace's 'I'm A Police Car' in the man-as-machine genre." [could be a cool thread idea. the best "man-as-machine" songs.] - --"Their corporate appearance suggests four people plucked at random from the streets of Cambridge. A crazed little Angus Young clone on *lead* guitar and grimaces, for instance, shares the stage with a defiantly passionless and abrasive black statue of a singer. They begin by chanting an absurd rhyme and staring blankly at the back of the hall." - --"The Soft Boys' busy performance was a beehive of frantic energy aimed at evoking a mood, but succeeding at the expense of musical unity. For influences they delved into an eclectic pot-pourri of musical snatches and styles, some of which surfaced elegantly while a lot of it sank in a quag of subliminal complexity. Their unorthodoxy is revealed most strongly through singer Robyn Hitchcock, who hails from an abyss of his own. A latter day Bela Lugosi look-alike, he growled his farrago of self-penned songs, touching upon private obsessions of transexuality, shellfish, crowbar wallers and Sandra's brain transplant." [don't you wish the american press featured writing like this? it used to, actually. one time, back when i was about the biggest baseball fan on the face of the planet, i went into the microfiche room and checked out some old new york times, basically trying to get a feel for what things were like during babe ruth's heyday. the beat writing was *incredible*! i remember in particular one game story ruthlessly castigating red faber for having issued babe ruth an intentional walk. the writer called him "yellow" faber throughout the length of the article, and of the intentional walk said something like: "the people pay their money not to see yellow faber throw four wide ones, but to see the blunderbuss swing his war club."] - --[of Eaten By Her Own Dinner]: "What a title. I certainly find this indigestible. A guitar-heavy mess with ludicrous lyrics, and supposedly his last ever single. We can but hope. Syd Barrett has a lot to answer for." it even pulls from the "Fegmaniax" magazine. "Nobody seems entirely sure what OSCAR is -- A&M claim that it's an unreleased album, Sincere Management insist that it's cobbled together from radio sessions, while the consensus on the Fegmaniax computer network seems to be that it was a session to record B-sides for prospective A&M singles that never occurred." boy-o, this thing's really fun. the accompanying letter states, "Here is what is believed to be the last copy of 'Pox Upon The Media.'" but i'm sure that if enough people inquire, they could be convinced to go to a second printing. oh, and here are some tour dates from 1978: may 25, marquee, london may 26, nashville, kensington may 27, nags head, high wycombe june 1, sandpiper, nottingham june 2, rock garden, middlesbrough june 5, tiffany's, edinburgh june 7, stowaway, newport june 8, f club, leeds june 9, rafters, manchester june 15, metro, plymouth june 17, polytechnic, portsmouth june 18, marquee, london < . . . or does it have to do with lyrical content? The fact that the album title's lyrics are contained within a song, even though that song doesn't share the title of the album?> yes, that's exactly what i meant. eponymous, maybe. though that's not as fun as, "title track." The marquee said "Lisa Loeb," but we know better, don't we? ;) The only minus was that the set was so short (only 7 songs, 35 minutes). Otherwise, I was completely breathless. I was worried about him not having a backing band, but I actually didn't miss it once he started playing. He SELLS these songs, big-time. Whew. I actually got misty-eyed during "Foolish Love," so swoony was I. Interestingly, he played three songs on guitar rather than piano, and one of the guitar songs was non-LP ("California," which was certainly high-quality, if not as good as most of the album tracks). Since this list is so interested in concert fashion, I should also mention that he wore a rather quizzical outfit -- black jacket, no shirt, a red scarf around his neck (yeah yeah, I know...) and wooden Japanese sandals. Wacky. I only stayed for about six songs of Loeb's set -- and I was pacing around the room impatiently during even that short period. Talk about "precious" - -- after she had offered geeky, between-song monologues about how cool seven-layer dip *and* phone cards are, I had enough. Oh, and speaking of precious, Jewel made a surprise cameo during the last song played by opening act Steve Poltz (leader of the Rugburns). Just in case any of you ectowimps care. ;) Robyn-related news: The LA Times reports this morning that Robyn has written three songs for use in an upcoming indie film called "Slipping Down Life." Actor Guy Pearce will perform them in the film. Joe Henry and meek-rocker Ron Sexsmith also contributed three songs apiece. Kinda surprised that no one posted about this previously, given the depth of Fegmania exhibited here. Other Robyn-related news: I bought a used copy (29 cents!) of a record called "Red, Hot & Bothered: The Indie-Rock Guide to Dating" last night. It's a 10" EP, but it also contains a wry fanzine about the indie-rock perspective on sex and dating. In one article, I was surprised to see an interesting quote from Robyn regarding "music to fuck by." Is this quote ridiculously common knowledge and posted on someone's RH site, or should I post it? Bernie Laporte still holds as his serious goal mastery of the classical guitar. The Fripp is a fairly frequent poster to the King Crimson mailing list "Elephant Talk" (a very informative but weighty list with about 3000 subscribers!), but he can be, erm, difficult. He has a very very dry sense of humour and can also be a very prickly customer (imagine if Eb was tongue in cheek 50% of the time, but you could never tell which 50%...). He has a very weird view of the music industry in general, and he sure stirs up debate, though. And some of his comments are hilarious: (an example: listmember: "some of Fripp's recent releases have just too much meaningless noodling for my taste". RF: "please state what proportion of meaningless noodling you would like this Fripp's music to contain") Better though would be something else that Elephant Talk has - press releases from Robert's production company DGM on upcoming Fripp news straight from the horse's mouth. Though not required, antisemitism and social conservatism seem to be > extremely common among fascist states. Fascist economics are certainly not laissez faire. The Koestler / Orwell analysis of fascism and communism is that both systems are 'totalitarian', which is to say that the government aims to control _everything_, and that includes the economy. The economic system is carefully directed through government controls on the largest businesses (e.g. Krupps, Messerschmitt, Daimler-Benz in Germany). An armament programme can be used as a way to create jobs. There are rigid financial and exchange controls to prevent export of capital, and there are import controls to prevent the importation of goods which the government disapproves of (or can't afford). All this is much more like communist central planning than laissez faire. The difference is that the fascists don't take over the businesses, they regulate the things that businesses do. Economies such as modern Japan and South Korea have some similarities to this kind of system. Large corporations are directed (formally or informally) by government guidance, and imports (at any rate until recently) are pretty tightly restricted. The US government's close relationship with a large arms industry gives it substantial economic leverage, but the US government does not attempt to direct industry in the way that MITI does in Japan. Laissez faire economists would say that the recent problems of the Asian economies are in part a result of attempts to buck the markets by directing too much production into exports; developing cosy and corrupt relationships between business and government; and restricting the growth of the domestic consumer expenditure. These are all typical of the difficulties that centrally planned economies encounter. - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 10:34:54 PDT From: "Capitalism Blows" Subject: Re: Robyn Does Dodge robyn did some radio interview right before they were getting ready to open for rem on the GREEN tour. the interviewer asked if these would be the largest audiences he'd ever played for. he said, probably, but since they weren't the headliners, it didn't really matter, 'cause nobody would be paying any attention to them anyway. he said that they may as well go up there and fry an egg for all it mattered. i might've even put that bit on the spoken chain tape. can't remember now for sure. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 13:28:51 -0400 From: THOMASIN COUNTEY Subject: No more email from you please I no longer want to receive your email. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 13:03:35 -0500 From: "JH3" Subject: Robyn Does Eggs Robyn sez: >I simply can't "fuck," as you put it.
