The Monochrome Set are superb. I'd forgotten about them for a while despite their first album being one of my faves of all time. I had a funny experience with that album, years ago. One day in high school, I had a friend come up to me and say breathlessly, "Do you know you're mentioned on a Adam & the Ants album?????" I said, "Huh?" "No, really. It says your name!" "No way, come on." "Really!" So a few days later, I heard the song he's talking about: that one (called "Friend"?) which has all those lines about "I'm a friend of [name], I'm a friend of [name]...." First time, I heard it, I thought "Huh? It DOES sound like my name!" But after a couple more listens and much discussion, we finally concluded that he was singing, "I'm a friend of ERICH FROHM." Heh heh heh. Eb ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1998 07:55:23 -0700 From: Mike Runion Subject: NASA Clapping? My name is Albertina Hoffman, and I work at the Ever-Expanding Bicycle Shop Pulsating at the Center of the Void in the same mall as you. My friend King Strut and me (his real name is Dwight, but he spells it that way cause of Peter Blegvad) always see you and we think you are TOTALLY multifarious!!! I remembered your name from your speculum and I looked you up in the Ann Arbor Socialist Front Weekly. That is a glutinous picture of you. I don't know much about John Zorn's music 'cept for that song "Locus Solus" but King Strut and me are going to his auto-da-fe next week cause your going to file your teeth down to small, worn nubbins and dye them black. Do you have a hot capybara for Dwight, so he'll stop transmogrifying you? He thinks your like Ambassador Kosh from "Babylon 5" but I think your WAY more ambiguous than that. Ambassador Kosh was pretty tenticular, though. That's my favorite show, 'cause I make my own German white chocolate bars with almonds, too. It's not -too- suprising given his blues background. Haven't heard it (never been a Clapton fan) but those seem like pretty traditional blues lyrics to me, and he's just playing with the form, taking a shot at writing in that style. I think "Friends". I'd have to look go find it and look at it and I'm too tired/lazy right this second. Basically it's one of Adam's super-silly one joke repeated ad absurdem songs. It's a dig on those people who try to get freebies by claiming to "know someone". What makes it a lot funnier than such a thing should by rights be is the fact that it's a totally absurd list of names. Well, I think it's because it's an awfully violent idea, especially from someone who wrote a song about meeting his son in Heaven. You might be right that he was just trying out the form, but when you think of all the violence that's been seen in the music world and the real world lately, lyrics like this really aren't anything to be proud of. From the same perspective, "Down by The River" sounds violent coming from the same guy who wrote "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man". Yet I don't see anyone making a fuss over Neil Young and domestic violence. What's with singling Clapton out? > You might be right that he was just trying out the form, Actually I'm sure I am. I somehow -really- doubt that he was seriously advocating wife-beating as a worthy practice:). >but when you think of all the violence that's been seen in the music world >and the real >world lately, And always, throughout time, world without end, amen. It's nothing new, it's just that now we get to see massacres on cable. We SEE more now in the information age. That doesn't mean there is more, it just -looks- like more. In other words, I just don't buy the argument. I don't buy even one single small microscopic part of it- neither that lots of human violence is a sudden new thing, nor that artists owe it to the world NOT to sing about things we find unpleasant from perspectives that might disturb us, NOR that this causes people to go out and beat their wives. Never have, never will. If I'd been the judge in that Judas Priest suicide case I'd have -laughed- those papers out of court, I swear to God. I AM BUYING THIS NOT! I AM BUYING THIS NEVER! (Such a catchy melody - seems like I've heard it somewhere before though...) And, obviously, not too many people advocate blowing off the head of one's spouse. On the other hand, I think that lyrics are often like journal entries for song writers and that it's good to get out these feelings and set them down on paper, even if the feeling would never be acted out upon and even if the idea doesn't exist in the writer's rational mind. It obviously exists somewhere and needs to get purged. Sure, it could be argued that Clapton is *just* working with a standard blues fable, but I think it goes a bit beyond that. I also think that Clapton's lyrics here do a lot less to actually endorse violence than do rap lyrics, which endorse/observe the violence as a way of life, rather than as a single event or isolated emotional breakdown. Rap lyrics seem counter- productive to me and like they probably have a hand in keeping the vortex of poverty and violence a-swirling. Clapton's lyrics, on the other hand, seem merely cathartic to me. - -------Michael K. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1998 15:29:25 -0400 From: tanter Subject: England is winning! Thought it mihgt be of interest to one of y'all (as RH is so fond of saying). If you aren't a fellow Portlander (but do live in the U.S.), then s/h would be an extra $2. Disc two has many really obscure artists on it, culled from several years of SXSW-ness. I will be doing the same for the Mark Gloster and Big Rubber Shark CD, _Monday's Lunch_, which many of you own. I'd like to get your comments, views, insights, etc. Leaving the subject line as testimonials will make these easy to find. Also, one more thing, for those of you who have contributed to the original _Glass Flesh!_ effort, please send me links to your websites and fun stuff like that. Let me know if you want me to include you in the thank you flyer that I'm going to put together for future sales, so people can contact you.
