Karen replied to my car symbol suggestion: >"Oh my god. I think a little steel THOTH would be brilliant. Just think!" Of course! I should have thought of it myself! I have often said that if anyone ever held a gun to my head and made me get a tattoo (pretty much the only way it's gonna happen), it would be of the Thoth head encircled. (That or some XTC image). > "Jude, you are one brilliant guy." Well, thanks Karen! :-) Also, I just checked out www.musikweb.com thanks to a suggestion on the wire mailing list, and they have a couple of Robyn-related items for $2.99 or less (vinyl, I think) but I'm not sure what they are... one is a compilation of Glass Fish artists, it seems, called "Between Today and Tomorrow" w/ the Soft Boys and Robyn (no track info listed), and the other is "John Hegley & the Popticians- I Saw My Dinner on TV" and Robyn is listed in parentheses after Popticians. (They also have some of the Robyn catalog fairly cheap, too.) And all I ask is that if someone from this list is now scrambling to buy these things because they contain the rarest Robyn recordings ever or something, I would like a tape of them. Pretty please with a Thoth head on top. Non Robyn topics (page down alert): People have finally replied to Tom Clark's High Llamas question, but I just had to add to Eb's reply by saying that, if anything, "Cold and Bouncy" is more like the "Turn On" EP (that is to say, more like Stereolab's usual electronica). Have any of you checked out the "Santa Barbara" disc? I'm beginning to think I like it even more than any other O'Hagan album. Of course, I still have yet to find his solo album and any Microdisney stuff. Speaking of Stereolab, does anybody have any info (i.e. track listing) for the Japan-only EP Collection CD? I see it for sale online often, but no one gives the tracks, and I'd hate to shell out upwards of $35 or so for stuff I already have. Finally, what's the deal on Rufus Wainwright? I found his CD for $2.50 the other day, and bought it because I thought someone had mentioned it here. Of course, now I realize that Eb mentions it every post ;-) Well, I'm sorry to say that I didn't really like it, despite Jon Brion's involvement, and have already since resold it. It kinda fell into that singer/songwriter genre that I sometimes find sorta dull (a la Ron Sexsmith and -gulp- Bob Dylan. Don't flame me!!! :-) ) That's it for now, Jude ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jun 1998 10:27:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Bayard Subject: Permatree (Re: Robyn at Ram's Head vol. 2) On Sun, 14 Jun 1998, Ben wrote: > Also... there was at least one pair of microphones set up in the back. I was also looking for Jenee, self-descibed as a beautiful blonde with a pint of stout, but i think we all were, last night. I did get to add one more feg to my list of met fegs, lurker Rob from Florida, who had come up for the Tibetan thing but had to change gears after some people were struck by lightning at RFK stadium. (yikes). Anyhoo... Robyn was nice enough to let us tape the show. I'd like to get this tape, and the SF gig, etc, to as many people as possible, but I don't have the time to do separate tape trees for all the great tapes i have. A year or 2 ago I did three tape trees at once and I got so flustered I sent Eb a tape without the plastic box, and he's never let me live it down. What I propose: a permanent tape tree structure which can be posted on the web, so everyone always knows who they're getting tapes from, and who they're sending tapes to. Best of all, it pretty much sets you up to get tapes in your mailbox automatically for life! I'd be willing to set up the structure if it means not having to do it again for every great tape that comes along. So what I'm saying is: if you have any sort of DAT, minidisc, cdr, 4-head cassette, two VCR's, or whatever, and you want to be the first to get all the best shows automatically, and you're willing to make copies for X number of fegs (let me know how many), write me. Even if you just have average cassette decks, you can still be a 2nd-level branch (if the tree grows that big.) I guess this would just be for the must-have shows, but I'm open to ideas. If we get enough kind digital people we could just give clones to all of them and tell people who want analogs to contact one of them. (a tape shrub?) The show last night was great. My head is still spinning. We got a different version of "Alien Chuck" and another improv called "Mike the Viking". We were all laughing really hard at that one. The between-song humor was outstanding. Holmes and Watson made several appearances-- I thought of JH3 and his Holmes parodies. anyway, Gene wrote down the setlist and will post it soon. I gotta split. =b ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jun 1998 14:44:12 GMT From: dwdudic@erols.com (David W. Dudich) Subject: Rams head show. There were quite a few fegs in attendance...Some of us got together for dinner earlier. Bayard got to go in the back and meet The Man himself in the back where he and Michelle were meeting with Cynthia and her family. (Believe it or not.) Robyn apparently wanted to thank Bayard for doing Glass Flesh 1, and ask him for a copy of his tape of last nights show. About 45 minutes-1hour after the show, Robyn came out to meet some of us. He signed autographs (my copy of "Hen" now has a signature by his picture!), explained what "linctus house" is (and mentioned some 'really great' prescription drug in britian which is codine AND caffine!), explained that he is almost done wriiting the novel, and mentioned the difficulties of sustaining continuity for hundreds of pages. Also said he REALLY liked the Rams Head, which I agree is a MUCH better venue than the 8x10. So, hopefully he will be back there again soon. Great night! >Subject: Robyn at The Ram's Head > >Robyn kepy up the string of fantastic shows in the DC area tonight! he started with 'Cheese Alarm", did "1974", "balloon man" (he remarked afterwards, on seeing the sheet of musical acts coming to the Rams Head, which mentioned "robyn hitchcock, ex leader of egyptians and soft boys, singer of hit song "balloon man"" "it oughta be 'Baboon Man!"), "madonna of the wasps", "trilobite... Also, in banter had a reoccuring bit with a bit fish being squeezed into the microphone with different effects, and Sherlock Holmes and Watson kept popping up. Ther >were two "new" songs I've never heard, one with the chorus "I've got all >the time for you" (or something like that...) "nothing but time for you"...interesting song. and one he said will be >recorded by an Australian actor. He said later that it was an indie film with someone from "LA Confidential." Also, he did a song "from a Joan Baez" >album that I never heard. "Her SIlver daggers"...an old folk song. Add to that "Victorian Squid" (!), "Cheese >Alarm", "Neitchzie's (sp?) Way", "More Than This" (YES!!!), "The Ghost In >You" (double YES!!!) and a host of others (including two improvised songs) >and you've got the 378th consecutive killer Balt/DC area RH gig! Began with Cynthia Mask... wearing black shirt with large white polka dots early, slamander shirt late... hair seemingly grown longer since last time... did solo acoustic, acoustic duo with Tim Keegan, piano (yes!), and back to acoustic again... both sets featured about four songs I had never heard, which was a blast... two piano songs per set, Flavour of Night and one new song... the Storefront opening will be on November 18 at the Film Forum in NYC... standout songs for me were Trilobyte, 52 stations, Queen of Eyes (with Tim), Chinese Bones, Viva Sea Tac, the early performance of Jewels for Sophia, and I'm Only You... he played IODOT but I like it better with the electric guitar... he strummed an entire song at the end with a plastic fish... banter was highly enjoyable, including bits about gourds "lit up from within", mistaken notions about going back home again, tomatoes growing out of radio sets, and re-living the bus tickets of your life (1974 being a year of bus-tickets, now looking kind of grainy)...I think Woj was at the late show... no Robyn merchandise... suffice it to say both shows were great. --Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jun 1998 11:29:21 -0600 From: hal brandt Subject: Re: Rams head show. Well, here's my input on the show, in no particular order. Favorite witticisms: "Cheese needs no passport." "How much polystyrene can I think of?" "A constellation of flies." He also introduced us to the concepts of fish stereo and the apple sandwich. He said his novel is finished, after a second draft, and (if I understood what he was saying) is shopping it around for a publisher in New Yawk. He also introduced "More Than This" as a song by the *late* Bryan Ferry. Heh. It was grand to finally meet him (after the show). He signed my copy of IODOT, and was pleased to know it was I who said I'd be buried with it in the Rhino compilation. I've never stood next to him in person, but he's a nice guy who related well to his fans, and I respect that about him. I also gave him a copy of the book _Fishboy_ by Mark Richard, which I had been trying to do for the last four times I've seen him. I heartily recommend the book -- imagine Happy the Golden Prince stranded on The Ghost Ship, and you've got a good idea of what it's like. And it passed Doug's Syntax Test, too, if I'm not mistaken. =;-} The Ram's Head forbid photos with flash (ack!), but Scary Mary and I did manage to grab a few photos. If mine come out, I'll post them on the www and pass on the URL. The Ram's Head's pub had imposed a Robyn theme with the food: Glass Hotel Duck and Balloon Man Fish and so on. No joke. We took pictures to prove it. It was nice to see Scary Mary, Bayard, and Doug again, and a fine hello to Luther and His Friend With The Autographed Hat.
