Hi Fegs-- Every year I make a compilation tape of songs from my fave albums of the past year, and send it out to my old friends from college, record store fellow employees, etc. This year's tape is already in progress, but I can't decide which track from Neutral Milk Hotel's "Aeroplane" to put on there. It has to be a track that we love, and yet will appeal to the masses and make them want to run out and buy it. This tape goes out to about 15-20 of my old musichead friends from the 80's, and they all have pretty different tastes. If you can provide any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. This year's tape title is "Folkmusic Is Boring", (guess the reference??), as about half of the stuff on there is singer/songwriter acoustic stuff so I thought of putting "Oh Comely" on there, damn I love that song, but it would hog up like 10minutes! It's cool that everyone here seems open to discussion of a variety of bands, from NMH to Polara to the Smashing Pumpkins. Most lists I have been a part of usually degenerate into a lot of name calling when people begin to discuss anything other than the main band that is the centre of the list. I wonder if this is just because Robyn fans are a little more open to different sounds. Even though I listen to NMH, Polara, Smashing Pumpkins, Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello etc., it still surprises me that other people have equally varied tastes. So to this list of many tastes, I have a question: has anyone read the Nick Drake bio that has just come out. I almost picked it up when I was in Vancouver, put it was a touch pricey, so I wondered if there are any opinions out there.... His first full cd was a collection of singles put out by Ajax records, which was followed by two discs on Merge: Poor Fricky (1996?) and . . . Mel (1997). I think it was "Mel" anyway. I'd probably start with Poor Fricky or the singles disc. You can order them all from Ajax records at ajax@ripco.com and can probably order them through Merge, if they do mail order. I just had my most important musical discovery of the year, so far: the new debut by Rufus Wainwright (self-titled, on Dreamworks). Hot dang, this album's great! WHEE! It's COMPLETELY steeped in the classic Van Dyke Parks sound -- melodies so ornate (possibly TOO ornate) that you can hardly hum them, lavishly detailed arrangements, languidly irregular tempos, a strong feeling of Americana, etc. -- but unlike Parks (and for that matter, Sean O'Hagan, who has just been thoroughly knocked on his ASS), Wainwright can SING, and can write lyrics that aren't image-spew nonsense. This album is so stuffed with ideas that I'm really going to need a few more listens to absorb it, but this may be the best disc I've heard this year besides you-know-what. Oh, and I should point out that Parks himself contributes some arrangements -- passing the torch, I suppose. Or perhaps it's just the Lenny Waronker connection (Waronker is now a Dreamworks executive, and the album's executive producer). Now, I'm not going to tell everybody to run out and get this, as with Neutral Milk Hotel. There's almost zero Robyn Hitchcock conceptual overlap here, beyond the fact that Jon Brion is the album's producer and a prime supporting player, and I gather that Brion has been recording with Hitchcock also. But if you swoon for that baroque Brian Wilson/Randy Newman/Parks/O'Hagan thing, you need to get this album PRONTO. One song ("Matinee Idol") will even grab the Tom Waits lobby. Now admittedly, I figure that Terrence is already well-aware of Wainwright, because if the Beach Boys mailing list is worth even a PENNY, they've been discussing this album for months, prior to its release. But as for the rest of you.... The only thing which kills me is that Wainwright performed locally TWO DAYS AGO, and I discovered the album too late! Well, I guess that's the drawback of launching a tour in Hollywood. Hope he comes back...SOON. I'm still into that sort of music (among eighteen other genres), and I would have considered hauling myself across the country for one of these shows. I don't love Bauhaus quite *that* much, but the combination of a Bauhaus concert and an excuse to visit California would have been tempting. Fortunately for my bank account, I didn't hear about it until after it was sold out. (I can thank GWU's unreliable Usenet server for that.)
