Great news about the Dylan shows BTW, just listened to some vintage Dylan boots with outstanding quality a few weeks ago. Reminds me of how I recorded a Dylan Tv show back in the sixties by sticking a mic in front of the Tv speaker and recording on a massive reel to reel. Of course it forcedthe entire household to be quiet for an hour, but my folks actually liked Dylan , so they didn't really mind.. I could have hanging with him every weekend. And now he's migrating north. Such is the life... Party day dawned cool and moist, casting doubt on the necessity of my plans to detour and inject strange gases into my car to make it colder, so my passengers would not broil in their own juices. Mary (or Scary Mary, as she likes to be called) was early. She brought so much stuff! A cool cooler made of fabric, full of drinks and food, big boxes of books and cd's and etc, too much to list really. Between her stuff and my tape decks my cavernous hatch-back was full. I left my big DAT deck at home and transferred my clothes from a bulky suitcase to a more flexible plastic grocery bag. We rounded up Pathetic Doug and Chris Gross (what is it with you guys and adjectives?) and we were on the road. Traffic was light, as beach goers no doubt were long gone by that time. On the way we saw Turtle Beach and the WeightLifting Museum. Some construction forced us into a tiny concrete channel we couldn't see over the top of, but even so we arrived at the party before anyone else (even the Quail, who was off procuring beer and other goodies.) So we basically made ourselves at home, and introduced ourselves to the cats. The rest you know -- but I should mention that a certain ever-lovin' blue-eyed listmeister was crackin' wise the whole weekend and really surprised and impressed lj. He also makes awesome pancakes and looks more than a little like the thunder god. by way of the gossip report, here are the people whose ears were probably burning last weekend: tracy copeland, aidan merritt, susan dodge, robyn, and others i'm forgetting right now. not to mention those of you who sent surrogates and presents. they were great - thanks!! the biggest surprise of the weekend was that no-one mentioned Eb... what's up with that? actually, there was a toast to his health. we were well 'in our cups' by that point and down to the bitter dregs, but that's how he would have wanted it, no? i have never SEEN so much beer as was at this party. it was mind boggling. Mike Runion and Nat sounded really good together. How about recording something for the next GF, perhaps using hard drive recording technology and ftp? The Robynsongs singalong was really fun. It was just fun listening to Mike and Doug play in general. The instructions for the FegGame were just one of the many things i forgot... I forwarded then to a certain feathered friend, but early in the evening he was too drunk to remember how to access his email. And I *think* it was my idea to head to the Swimmin' Hole, though it could have been Quail's. It was almost certainly Quail's idea to call Eb. And lj had the best idea of all, which was never to mention the party on-list, maybe even just all become lurkers for a while and see what happens. Lang would be so worried! The feg-game was still fun even though we didn't play by cone-rules (we didn't have any cones anyway. I'll try and make some for the next party.) Speaking of which... yes, I would be happy to host the next one, or the one after next if Susan will have us before then. The place is a mountaintop cabin in the Blue Ridge mountains, complete with valley view, hot tub and 22 acres of wilderness! I would live there all the time if i could. Telecommunting, here I come... Anyway, this will happen sometime in the fall, most probably. I'm not sure how close the nearest airport is but i'll find out. The place is about 70 miles west of dc. And I can drive again, of course... Doug, you and I are even but you can owe me after the next one. ;) I got Tom's mix tape. Thanks to everyone for everything. See you soon. I have some NW airlines vouchers. =b np: _ok computer_, FSOL _dead cities_ (thanks for the loan Mary!) ps. i'll try to post setlists for the tapes soon. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 May 1998 11:40:00 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: ich bin ein Quailinger Bayard wrote: >the biggest surprise of the weekend was that no-one >mentioned Eb... what's up with that? I am most indebted to the great Quail for sending me two shows which have completely converted me to Robyn's acoustic music. I must admit that until recently , although liking Rh's solo stuff, I have tended to hanker after the sheer "Oomph" of the Egyptians. The shows in question are the Knitting factory 3-14-97 and CrocodileCafe 10-4-94. Just what is it about these shows which turn me into a steaming heap of emotional dross every time I listen to then ? Well, for a start, I am a real sucker for emotive solo acoustic performers . Richard Thompson, Loudon Wainwright, Bert Jansch, Robyn Williamson, Geoffrey Oryema, Andy Irvine, Tony Mcmanus, etc. I can't get enough of them. I now believe that Robyn has joined this august bunch in a major way. Here's why. Today we pulled down my daughters swing. Shes twelve now and never uses it. I felt sad in a way, as it meant the end of childhood and the beginning of her path towards adulthood and all the burdens that that brings. In a weird way i saw a connection here to the career of Robyn ,the Softboys and early Egyptians stuff having an adolescent feel ( which I love ) a definite Barrett influence and a roughness that is missing from the later songs and performances. He's searching for a style , trying things out, it doesn't all work perfectly . Now I feel that the acoustic Hitchcock has found himself in every way. Some of those songs work best for me in the acoustic environment, such as "Queen Elvis","Radio storm" - ( god that song slays me ) and "Autumn is your Last chance"I know we had a long thread a few months back as to whether Robyn is just treading water or ( shock horror) is he past his best. Perhaps in his recorded output this could be true, but judging by these performances all I get is the message that this guy has found himself on-stage .He is confident enough to go out there on his own and the result is awesome . This " brides stripped bare of her bachelors " approach just is sodding fantastic !. Its the perfect output of a mature artist .Even when his voice cracks up during performance it seemssomehow "Right" Since listening to these shows I have been wandering around singing snatches of lyrics to myself and getting some funny looks when people happen to walk into a room when I'm muttering "Each of her silver wands " and " I met a solid bodied dwarf and she told me a story" to myself. Still they know me , so they really aren't all that surprised. What draws me to solo performers such as RH and Rt is their ability to just MOVE me to tears or to ecstasy, often within the space of a song. The sparse acoustic accompaniment and the fragile , vulnerable vocal delivery of both these guys just blows me away. They are giving us something that is exquisitely beautiful, ethereal and unique. They also give me something that moves my spirit far more than any organized religion can do .When compared to the puerile bleatings of most of the commercial offerings that pass for entertainment in this decade they crush the opposition flat . No contest. So I now love Robyn's acoustic and electric output equally and its down to listening to live shows. I was not moved in the same way by the studio recordings they don't cut the mustard . So a plea . For those of you who don't collect tapes of shows, just get one or two good recordings from over the years . Compare them to the studio versions, which as more soul ? I think the live tape will nearly always win over the studio because although it may not be perfect , its got that connection between the audience and the artist ( which was always the KEY ingredient at at Grateful dead shows and which non deadheads just never seem to understand ) which often allows the performer to transcend the studio versions in spontaneity, feeling and energy. I'll take that over technical perfection and the definitive version any day. dave Ps , Now how the hell can I get Robyn to come back to Australia and play - I need to record him for posterity on my D6 so i can relive the show over and over( and so I can swop tapes with other fegs! ) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 12:49:05 +0800 From: Jon Fetter Subject: Re: It's just a big liver, for cryin' out loud... >Well, at the risk of being completely repulsive, I will say that I've >heard of midwives having their clients chew on a bit of placenta during >labor, as placentas are chock-full of yummy oxytocin (a hormone that >speeds up contractions). I agree that the "acoustic folkie" (I knows a folkie when I smells one) Robyn is better live than when he was with the Egyptians. He seems to be enjoying himself more at these shows and the songs have an atmosphere about them where they come across being more emotional... Of course, there are some wonderful Egyptians performances as well (such as "Gotta Let This Hen Out!"), but what makes a great Egyptians show is when they rock out to the 10th power. To me the Egyptians shows did not have as much emotional resonance to them. I do however think that the studio versions often contain qualities that cannot be replecated live, of course that would not be the point to a live show anyways! So I would not say that Robyn is better live, just different... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 10:57:29 -0700 From: Mark_Gloster@3com.com Subject: largest of all tragedies...
