Apparently a lot of the battle scenes were lifted from a videotape made by a "Misplaced Joan of Arc" hiding in the bushes of some strange place known as Quail Hollow wherein various personages were doing battle with tinfoil statuettes of characters whose names are so fowl as to make them quite difficult to pronounce. It was hard to assess from the purchased footage whether it was really a battle, or a fraternity drinking game, but many movies have the same problem when the script doctors and marketing whizzers add their "spice" to them. And what was all that about the whole headless Liam thing- a bit gratuitous. (Cathay Pacific has retracted their ban if he promisses to place his head amongst the checked baggage during future travel, since that particular parcel had conveyed just over half of his offending orifi.) John Derek's performance was lauded as "the greatest of his carrer... he was particularly striking as the body on the railing." Ralph Bakshi was also praised for his ability to "nearly animate the dead," in his work with Mr. Derek. Though he was not able to do the same for his other characters, seeing the Woj character come through the window with the scimitar between his teeth was such a great scene for me, that it made the whole movie. I sure hope he clenched the sword with the blade out. - -- Matter, Anti Matter, and Doesn't Matter Department: Since there is some physical principle or school principal or maybe it's a restraining order or something that doesn't allow me and The Great Quail to occupy the same domicile or public venue or restroom or cubicle or school or church or government building or spaceship or Jefferson Airplane, Starship, or Chupa Cabra, I stayed home and tried desperately to learn to use my Maple Cheese Slicer #614C, and my Koa Cheese Slicer #412K, and then my Giant "Hail Mary" Maple Turbo 12-String Cheese Slicer #655C to make horrible racket, or racquet, if the hmuh fits. I've made a few observations after several years of participating in arguments over concept albums. * If somebody thinks something is a concept album, I take their word for it, I don't argue with them. This doesn't automatically make it _my_ concept album, a good concept, or a good album. * If the album started out as a concept album, I probably won't like it. * If an album seems to have any common viewpoint or vision, someone will see it as a concept album. * They won't necessarily be wrong. * It doesn't matter much if they are. An aside: If you record an album that somebody sees as a sort of concept album, or suggest that it has gret depth that you or it does not strike you as possessing, you should not look at that person as though they have claimed that your lineage is linked to the mutual attractions of members of the same family tree. It can be very interesting to hear how a person (not necessarily accepted lore) decides how the material fits together. This happened to me, and I was flattered, despite my cringing at the idea of a concept album. - ---- Also, I've said it before that I draw a strong distinction between a Jon Anderson "concept album" and a Peter Gabriel->Genesis one. Jon Anderson makes rhimy babble that I don't understand, Peter G does too (used to). The difference for me is that Jon Anderson doesn't have any idea what he means. I think Peter Gabriel has an internal meaning. The pictures of The Lamb Lies Down are vivid for me, though I must confess that I may be _way_ too shallow to "get" all the nuances and meanings and symbols and such. It is poetic, and I may mold that meaning to my own life and interact with the work. The Yessystuff from Mr. Anderson is just gibberish to me. I guess I don't have a problem with others gripping to some meaning there but I don't even get good pictures. It is like taking holiday snaps with the lens cap on your camera and having them all enlarged as "Studies in Black #1-36" and proclaiming yourself as a cutting-edge artist. I mean c'mon. It is so fuzzy that it is impossible for the lyrics to live inside me. The virtuosity of the rest of the band, both in playing and in writing suffers deeply at the hand of it's lyric assassin, and that is not Gary. I think the band showed considerable promise when Trevor Rabin was contributing so much glue and lyrics and music, but he couldn't take the pressure and the politics and wisely got out. I'm sure that he suffered some financially, but I think he's doin' okay. I want to thank Ross for his explanation of Jon Anderson lyrics. I feel like I now understand why mountains come out of the sky and they stand there. - -------------------------------------------------------- Sharknews: ignore it if you can, apologies for the lack of Carl Palmer and Beach Boys content: Two of the songs from _Monday's Lunch_ by Mark Gloster and Big Rubber Shark have been specifically requested for use in low-budget movies. I expect to be filling out paperwork shortly on the first of those. A third song is being considered for a snowboarding video. I'm hopeful that that flick will net me some actual money. The other two will only do so if there is a major release and a soundtrack. I'm embarking on my second CD. Working title _Tuesday's Elevenses_ (that will probably change). It will have some original songs and some covers. Maybe even something from RH. I don't want to jinx it, but there may be some radio work in my near future... Also, the deal on _Glass Flesh!_ (a tribute to Robyn Hitchcock by his fans is still on, but I will be increasing the postage and handling on them soon. - ------------------------------------------------------- That's all for now. OK, I'm curious (though not yellow). What is Tejano Music? Anything to do with Z Z Top? Come to that, what is Traditional R&B? Is it singing standards in a soul style (e.g. Otis Redding's version of 'Try a little tenderness'?). Or is it a fusion of trad jazz and R'n'B, like Chris Barber? Or is it best performance in a 50s R'n'B style, in which case Jimmy Reed has to win it every time (with an occasional award to Slim Harpo). Tejano music is a rock-based bastardization of conjunto, which is a really cool and fun kind of music. . . Mexican melodies with a polka beat and feel (usually do to the presence of an accordion). Flaco Jimenez does some really cool traditional stuff, but he's also one of the main instigators in the style's rockification. Flaco is now a member of Texas Tornadoes, who are a sort of Tejano-for-the-masses supergroup which also features Freddy Fender and Augie Meyers. Actually, about 2/3 of their material is pretty enjoyable, although it walks a thin line in being kind of shmaltzy. Arhoolie Records puts out a great CD called "Tejano Roots," which has really great conjunto and tejano music from the past (I think) several decades. I have one in the series called "Orquestas Tejanes," which is primarily 50's orchestral conjunto music. . . sort of like mariachi, but a little different. Anyway, it's a style of music I've just recently gotten into. There are plenty of pitfalls, but also some really good stuff. I guess it's cool that the Grammys are recognizing it as a distinct musical form, in as much as I can muster up any amount of caring for the Grammys at all. - ------Michael K. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 11:50:32 PDT From: "Capitalism Blows" Subject: I Used To Love You I used to love you I used to walk the line I used to love you Though you were in decline I wore your hairstyle I learned to speak like you But then I left you Because I'd learned from you I used to love you 'cause you were "Where it's at."
