Not to dispute what you , or anyone else has said for that mater, this list has never been about RH and only RH topics. If so there would not be much of a list. Although, I do agree that some threads are tedious, but easily deletable based on who they are and what the subject line is. As I told Mr. Tews many years ago. there are threads I delete wholesale--it is not an offense to those I delete, but rather a means to keeping my signal to noise ratio within limits. But, being that I am Mr. Tews personal savior, I had to tell him that Supertramp is a bit off kilter. I would not say that, but I would say that much discussion relies not on what we just bought, rather what we have heard or listen to on some sort of regular (whatever that may be) basis. That being open to debate as well, but not necessary or required. I would not even consider talking about most of the music I buy on this list, there are better places for it. Amen! Yes, indeed. I also would like to add that this list has never been like Usenet. This sort of hostility doesn't belong here. You can lay down your arms, J.M. We're soldiers of love :). The law of averages would indicate that not everything discussed here will be interesting to everyone present. The law of politeness would dictate that one would therefore click on delete when one is confronted with the uninteresting. If you were at a party and you were participating in a conversation which was interesting to the other participants, but not to you, you wouldn't interrupt them all and say "You people are boring schmos", would you? Well, I dunno, maybe you would, but I suspect not. What most people would do is try to steer the conversation somewhere more interesting, or politely wander off for a bit, or pay minimal/no attention until it went somewhere interesting. I'm not sure I understand why people see fit to act differently online than they do in meat life. We're people on the other end of the keyboard here. I'm personally not all that interested in Marillion or Jethro Tull, but if others are, fine for them, I can click to delete, just like they can when I'm not writing about something that interests them. I'm also not sure that Spiritualized has -more- to do with Robyn Hitchcock than Marillion, or Jethro Tull, or Faust, or the price of tea in China. >I would not say that, but I would say that much discussion relies not >on what we just bought, rather what we have heard or listen to on some >sort of regular (whatever that may be) basis. That being open to >debate as well, but not necessary or required. Yes, I'd agree with that. Also I'd add that there is a wide range of both age and tastes around here. This is a -good- thing. I don't see how it's at all productive to berate people for being less hip than you are. We all write about what we know, and it would stand to reason that what we know is what we've listened to regularly enough to know. The fact that that may not be the band Spiritualized is hardly a rilly rilly big deal. And we can debate these things of course, and disagree, without slamming on people personally because they like something we think is crap. >toaster to buy. From "Gaffaweb", a Kate Bush site: "Two sided album, even on CD. One side light, one side dark. The dark side once was supposed to be filmed, but the movie got lost in all the promotion that came around HoL and TWS. Side two, also called The Ninth Wave, is about a woman drowning alone at night in the sea. All her dreams, emotions, thoughts, memories pass by in the songs. Is she rescued? Kate says so, your mileage may vary." So, it seems Kate Bush (who I feel is an authority on the music of Kate Bush....) considers the 2nd side (The Ninth Wave) to be a "concept". As for "Red" or "Before and After Science", I don't think they are concept albums at all. >I note that no-one has mentioned "Ziggy Stardust" yet... > Well, nobody's mentioned "Tommy" either, but that one, "Ziggy", "Dark Side" and a few others are albums *everybody* has! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 May 1998 23:40:15 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: "No one has mentioned...yet...." Honestly. Yes I know my recent posts may leave some of you doubting my sanity or capability of distinguishing fact from fiction, but I did not make this up. Since the list is so dead at the moment I thought I'd throw it your way. I heard this on the radio last week. scientists have discovered a new species of marsupial for the first time in many years, a small (obviously secretive to have hidden itself for so long) beast whose name escapes me , its most interesting feature is that *all* the males die after the mating season. Apparently the males indulge in veritable orgies of copulation, lasting up to 12 hours at a time, after which they quite naturally snuff it en mass, leaving the females to rear the young. I leave you to draw your own conclusions about this. dave ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 May 1998 23:39:55 -0700 From: "Kristin & Drew" Subject: Hey all you Seattle Fegs I saw a listing in the recent Seattle Weekly that Robyn will be gracing the Crocodile on June 26. (and deadline for the doorprizes) Hi folks :-) Just wanted to again say thanx to all those that contributed to the fund raiser for the new smoe.org hardware :-) As Jeff Wasilko posted yesterday, over $3500 thus far has been sent in and he is installing a new $4600 system this weekend. Also, as he said I am still accepting donations towards this cause, as we did fall about a grand short of the final cost (not to mention Jeff pays the $150+ a month operating costs....so I myself wouldn't mind seeing us foot the whole bill for the hardware :-) Also, also - I'd like to announce that the deadline for me to receive donations where you would be eligible for one of the door prizes is next weekend, as I am going to randomly pick the winners next Sunday May 31st, meaning donations I receive in the mail by next Saturday the 30th will be eligible. No matter if you donated one dollar or two-hundred fifty dollars, you have an equal chance for any of the prizes. (All of the door prizes are Jewel related) In addition to a bunch of Jewel key chains & Jewel pins, I have the seven Jewel autographed items listed below (at the end of this email). These items were autographed by Jewel herself, not some stamp, not another person, not some machine. (People have been asking me if her presigned poetry books that are available at various Virgin Megastore bookstores around the USA were actually signed by her....that I cannot answer, as I don't have an answer) I might add that the odds of winning one of these autographed items isn't too bad, since as of this moment there's only been 145 donations sent in. So the odds right now are just a tad over 20-1. To donate, send cash, check or money order. PLEASE make out any checks or money orders to Jeff Wasilko. Send donations to: Mike Connell PO Box 1206 Binghamton NY 13902-1206 This is the last time I'll be ringing that bell :-) Again, I wish to thank all of you who have donated already, all who may soon do so, and all of you who belong to any smoe.org mailing list, as it is the people and their love of the artists' music that make these lists special :-) To see what artists mailing lists exist for on smoe.org, check out http://www.smoe.org/lists cybernetly yours, Mike :-) P.S. If you are new to any of these lists and want more info on this fund raiser, just email me privately and I'll send you copies of my previous posts, and/or answer any questions you may have. *************************************************************************** THE DOOR PRIZES THE DOOR PRIZES THE DOOR PRIZES *************************************************************************** (In addition to a bunch of Jewel key chains and pins) The seven autographed items are (each individually awarded) a) Two twenty page, full of pictures, full color Jewel lyric books autographed in gold ink on the front cover. These are the same books that were being sold at last summers' Lilith Fair and Jewel's 1997 Fall Tour. b) Two sets of five 5x7 semi-glossy color photo packs, with the first picture autographed in gold ink. The pictures and lyric book can be viewed here: http://www.jeweljk.com/catalog1164/catalog.htm c) TWO of Jewel's ten times platinum Pieces Of You CD, with the insert autographed in gold ink. d) This is the top prize, especially to the collectors out there! A brand spanking new autographed in gold ink, RARE promotional CD, commonly known as "Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra". It's a 4 track "You Were Meant For Me" promo CD that is pretty much impossible to find now a days. In fact, I myself consider it harder to find than her other promo CD "Save The Linoleum". The 4 tracks are an unreleased version of You Were Meant For Me (known as the Juan Patino version), and three other unreleased tracks Cold Song, Rocker Girl and Emily (although all three have subsequently been released on the vinyl version of Pieces Of You) * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/pattyg.htm * * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * aka DuckOfPrey@aol.com WhyADuck55 on AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 09:43:48 -0400 From: tanter Subject: now THIS is news!!! Oasis has been declared persona non grata by the airline after passengers on the Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Perth complained of their unruly behavior. "We have refused any further carriage of Gallagher," the spokesman said. Gallagher and his entourage were reported to be drunk, smoking, swearing and abusing passengers on the flight. The group was reported to be so obnoxious that at one stage the captain was force to leave the cockpit in an effort to calm them down. Gallagher was due to appear in court in Brisbane on June 8 after being accused of assaulting a fan while in Australia. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 09:47:40 -0400 From: tanter Subject: what's going on today..?! (May 24, 1998 4:14 p.m. EDT http://www.nando.net) -- Former Men at Work band member Ron Strykert was jailed for being a deadbeat dad. The former lead guitarist for the Australian rock group was jailed for 24 hours on contempt charges for failing to make child support payments and a property settlement to his ex-wife. District Judge Nels Swandal said Strykert has earned $26,000 in royalties this year. "A big royalty payment came in and your (current) wife spent it," Swandal said. "That doesn't fly." The ex-wife, Janka Thomas, is owed $38,000 in a property settlement, and at least $8,000 in overdue child support. Strykert testified he will mortgage his $250,000 house to pay what he owes. Strykert is a member of the Church Universal and Triumphant, founded by Elizabeth Clare Prophet, and lives in Corwin Springs, a housing development established by the New Age sect where rock music was banned for years. Thomas resides in Australia, and lives with their two children on welfare, her lawyers said. Men at Work had several hits in the 1980s including "Down Under." Strykert left the band in 1990 when he joined the church, his ex-wife says. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 13:31:05 -0400 From: "mr. pointy" Subject: Re: Concept Albums also sprach Ben: >Isn't "Hounds Of Love" sort of a dual-concept album?
