Actually, there was a period in my life when the Moodies were one of my favorite bands. I think it was a combination of the classical instrumentation, the trippy hippy lyrics, the proclivity for the band to go "ooooh aaaaaah ooooh" a lot, the really WEIRD beginnings to their albums, the great voice of Ray Thomas, and the fact that the young Justin Hayward looked a lot like "Moonglum" from the early editions of TSR's "Dieties and Demigods." I *still* like the Moodies -- that is, their stuff dating from "The Present" and before. ("Days of Future Passed" and "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" are still two of my favorite "classic" rock albums.) But after the mid-80s, I fear they slid down a very sad road of bloated irrelevance, and I can hardly bear to hear any of their newer stuff. . . . it saddens me more than anything, even more than new ELP or Trevor Rabin's Yes. . . . Also, like Eddie, I was hit HARD by the death of Frank Herbert, one of my favorite writers who still had so much potential. My celebrity Death List, in order of how hard I was hit: 1. Jerry Garcia. (I was stunned, and I couldn't listen to the Dead for over a year) 2. Andy Warhol (My favorite artist in the whole world. I still cannnot believe he's dead.)(But I'm not as bad about it as Lou.) 3. Carl Sagan (My childhood hero, I am a science geek and an amateur astronomer because of him) 4. Frank Zappa (I saw one of his last shows, and I would not trade that memory for ANYTHING) 5. Allen Ginsberg (I mean, you just *knew* Burroughs was going to die -- and I actually loved WSB more -- but Allen?! It was not time for Allen to die!) 6. Harry Chapin (My mom's favorite artist, I grew up listening to Chapin. After he died my mom cried for a week, listening to all his albums. I first *really* learned about death that way.) 7. I've come to realize that The Great Quail is the person that I have always wanted to think I am, which gives amazing and frightening credence to that Mark_ is_just_a_character-_no,_an_extra-_in_a_Quail_novel_ about_otherwise_important_things. It could also be a pretty weird book if all the characters are like me in here ("well, I wish I was like the author, but it turns out I'm a character who has like a bunch of really unusual opinions and I babble a lot and stuff"), but man, I'd buy it. Ha! Oh, Mark! Really, my friend -- I may be more crotchity (sp?) than you think. If I may be embarrassingly confessional again, I am leaving teaching for several reasons, one of which is burn-out. I am BECOMING grumpy and crotchety and Abe Simpson-like, and I don't like it. It's not that I hate Youth or anything, it's just that almost ten years of seeing the same shit over and over again has been grinding down my faith in humanity. (Um, so my solution is to move to New York --? Weird, Quail-boy!) So essentially, I wish to leave teaching before I become what I hate -- I wanna get outta Dodge before Nietzsche's abyss has the last laugh, know what I mean? I started life as Jeff Spicoli, and I see myself ending it as Mr. Hand. Bad vibe! Bad vibe! So yeah, I believe in my previous impassioned post, but I sure as hell don't always live up to it. As a matter of fact, I am going through a LOT of changes in my life right now, and I don't mean my recent conversion to Scientology (The Cthulhu Reformed branch -- it costs less and you don't have to read all those "Battlefield Earth" Books.) I try to be a force of happiness on the List, but in truth, my life has been a bit dodgy lately - -- but I am finally doing what I want to in order to change it. I am leaving my job, my life here, my city of Harrisburg, and I am turning over quite a new page. This fills me with a tremendous sense of excitement and happiness, as many of you will no doubt see at the party. (I will be the one with Stimpy's Happy Helmet in hand, ready to slap it on the head of any Rennish folk!) But yes, I still believe in Love. As a matter of fact, I am *quite* a believer, and that faith is one of the only things keeping me going -- that and constant hopes for a Talking Heads reunion. Indeed, lately I have discovered that Love is even more powerful than I had suspected -- and that helps a lot, considering that David Byrne doesn't return any of my phone calls. >Instead, sometimes I express opinions >that may sound mean or vicious or stupid or silly >just plain wrong. Gee, Mark, I don't think anyone around here thinks that! Seriously. You are certainly *not* vicious or stupid, your silliness is a virtue and a blessing, and the only time you have ever been wrong is when you spelled "crotchity." Of course, I have been recently told by a List member that my spelling is legendarily atrocious, and I thank you all for not making fun of me. Um, for *that,* at least. >It is entirely possible that my >character will be edited out of the book. It is very possible that the author may be edited out of the book! I was recently informed by Woj-Sven Woj that I am adding too many new characters to the Feg List. (Helen? Where are ye, girl?) Call! Teleport in! Hop on a plane! Use your magic Quail decoder ring and get on the Shark Phone! I hope that this all made you feel better, Mark -- you seem like you need a bit of cheering up, and this List is Family, yes? I am willing to say that in public -- man, we all hang together, you know? The world is a big, scary, weird place, and it's nice to have such a unique extended family. The very fact that we all love Robyn's music makes us eccentrics of the same orbit . . . To me, that's the most important thing about this List -- we all, in the end, stick together. That's what we have, that's what we are: a hundred luninous points of light, a constellation spread across the world: a pattern of our own will, design, and responsibility. Pepper" as being a >concept album?!?! Well, to me it does seem to be intended as one, albeit a loose one. It does kick off with that "Sgt. Pepper" theme song and the next one being sung by "Billy Shears", and it does keep a sort of whimisical/circus-y/showtunish thang going throughout. And why has no-one mentioned this album? If and when I hear the >scrambling of little tuatara feet that will be how they get introduced to >McCartney! Shirley, you jest!! :) Seriously, if you knew my mom you wouldn't say things like this. She hates "rock and roll" (I can hear her voice dripping with ick as I write this :)) and would never have had McCartney (or Lennon, or Harrison, or....you get the idea) albums around. She didn't like it even when she was in college, the only thing she remembers nostalgically is the Beach Boys, which my explain why I personally have trouble thinking of them as a great pop group sometimes- I think of them as something wholesome and harmless my rock and roll hating mom liked :). Anyway I only knew -that- song because I'd managed to hear it on the radio- they did play it on the adult contemporary type stations she always had on while driving. The music I mainly recall her listening to when she listened at home was soundtracks to classic Broadway musicals. Which explains quite a bit actually both about my lyrical sensibility (I've often been accused of overvaluing lyrical cleverness), my love for artists who often display a "show tune-ish" writing style, and about my high tolerance for what other people might uncharitably refer to as "hokum" :). >I have been informed by my mum that my first words were "yeah yeah yeah". I >guess that gives you some indication of when I was born! Approximately 7-8 years before me, I'd wager from the timing of our respective cultural markers. Not quite time to get out the walker just yet! :) This reminds me actually- I've been curious about something. When I was a child I sang all the time, and my favorite shows on TV by far were music shows (I was an indiscriminate child- I may have cottoned onto the Smothers Brothers but I also loved Sonny & Cher, Hee-Haw, & Lawrence Welk, and a little later would never miss Sha-Na-Na, much to the chagrin of those babysitting :)). So I was wondering if other music fiends around here were the same way as children. Is this just an across-the-board thing, i.e., all children love music shows, or is it particular to the ones who later grow up to be geekoids who bore friends and family? :) >James "cranberry sauce" Dignan Ok, you've got the cranberry sauce? So who buried Paul, then? Love on ya, Susan ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V7 #197 *******************************
