And Mary adds: >No one told me about a swimmin' hole. Should I bring my bathing suit? Sure! Actually, I did *not* mention this, but Bayard's random joke may not be so random or jokey. There *is* in fact a "swimming hole" by my house, where the Susquehanna flows into the Connadaguinit. (No, I do not make these names up. The Indians who lived here before my Imperialist ancestors made these names up, which is probably why the settlers killed them off.) The swimming hole is only a very short walk, and it is relatively secluded -- I go nightswimming there all the time, while trying not to think of REM or rabid crayfish. So -- seriously! -- any Fegs wanting a midnight dip may freely do so, bathing suit, au natural, or fully caparisoned, does not matter -- the only folks who go back there after nightfall are a few bored fishermen and the occasional axe maniac. - --Quail PS -- anyone serious about swimming should probably bring an old pair of shoes or sandals or something -- there are a few sharpish rocks in the Connadaguinit. It is also a GREAT place to tell ghost stories and catch fireflies. . . . - ---------------------------------+-------------------------------- The Great Quail, K.S.C. | Literature Site - The Libyrinth: TheQuail@cthulhu.microserve.com | www.rpg.net/quail/libyrinth www.rpg.net/quail | Vampire Site - New York by Night: riverrun Discordian Society | www.rpg.net/quail/NYBN 73 De Chirico Street | Arkham, Orbis Tertius 2112-42 | ** What is FEGMANIA? ** "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents." -- H.P. Hey all, As many of you are aware, I'm about to emark on a foolhardy trek northward. Ultimate destination: FegFest '98. It's a rather cool and foggy day down here on the Space Coast (East Central Florida, for you yankee lot). I drove my daughter in to daycare and she was absolutely cramped in her carseat what with all the odd paraphenalia scattered about: bags of tapes, racks of CDs, a guitar, a cone, a small amp, other odds'n'ends...oh yeah, and some clothes. My delapidated '91 Nissan pickup fired up well, and is filled to the brim with an assortment of strange oily fluids. I'm planning on putting in a few hours here at work, perhaps showing off the fabled cone in all of its material realness, then skipping on up to Gainesville to perhaps meet up with one Terence Marks. I'll take in the glorious proggy shrine and bear witness to you all of its glory. I'll try and take video of the all the Brian Wilson, Peter Tork, and Pink Floyd posters. Tomorrow, my next departure from the old highway will take me through the small, oft-unheard township of Athens, GA. I'll be hookin' up with KeN SaBaTiNi and wife (thanks for putting me up for the night, guys!) and taking in the sights and sounds, as well as doing some swank record scroungin'. Friday looks to be an all day drive to PA. Can't wait to see everyone at the 'Fest. My sources say that "Tom's Brew" is nearly done and should be primed and ripe for Saturday. Ob Robyn: I was listening to the Largo tapes from last January...the 9th I think and for the first time really got into "I Dream Of Antwoman" hard. Great version. "swirling, takes up all my time, makes me know that i'm, a-booove, you." 2. "it's almost hurricane season! hot fucking damn!!" (even though i *detest* the summertime, i *love* hurricanes. that's maybe the one thing that keeps me from offing myself in the middle of july. that and seattle summers are relatively short and mild.) and yesterday i was looking through some old la times, trying to match a venue to a date, and i found a fairly decent article extolling robyn and tracy chapman. it said they both have "independent vision," which is the "rarest, most valuable" quality in music. you know, i never even bothered to see who wrote that article. for all i know, it coulda been eb. anyhow, the author called Ballon Man, "one of the catchiest pop oddities" since Mellow Yellow. the funny thing was, there was no preview of the show, just a very short blurb in the calendar. and, this article was offered in lieu of a review. it appeared two days after the show. now, let me say that i like the moody blues quite a bit, in contradistinction to everyone else on this list save terry marks. i'd put DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED somewhere in my top twenty. A QUESTION OF BALANCE in my top 50 almost surely. and IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD, and THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE, nestled comfortably within my top 200. for what it's worth. but, the other day i was listening to IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA for about the five millionth time, and it struck me that it's quite, maybe even very, reminiscent of DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED. listening to the record feels like an entire day passing. someone (russ?) said they didn't like the record because it was a lot of just jeff and his acoustic. that's true. but, it's like the album comes in waves. and it just seems to me to correspond very well with a day. the other thing is, it's always felt like a concept album to me, even though i'm not sure it is one. and it's symmetrical like a day is, both musically and lyrically. that's the one thing you notice straight away, actually. oh well. i could go on and on, but i guess i'll spare you. until eb gets the neutral milk hotel list up and running, anyway. oh yeah. the new robbie robertson kicks ass! the leonard peltier song we've all read so much about is one of the more moving and inspiring songs you'll ever hear. "The Dude abides"...I don't know about you, but i take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there, "The Dude," takin' 'er easy for all us sinners.
