Returned last night from a business trip to London. Now I've been there for work several times but this is the first time that the ENTIRE time I was there, the song "Sunny Goodge Street" ran 'round my head continuously. I couldn't stop it. I haven't heard this song in years (haven't listened to any Donovan in years) but there it was. "Sunny Goodge Street" was always one of my favorites but so was "The Enchanted Gypsy". Leave them hanging! Big difference- the phrase "Dr. Sam Backett never got home." at the end of the last QL was moving...the Last Seinfeld didn't do ANYTHING! I think it was a joke on the viewers...HE laughed...we didn;t. I'm with Jeme and Eb. . . super lame episode. Abominably bad TV. I didn't see it as a cliffhanger at all, and I doubt that "Seinfeld" will ever be revived. How can you even have a cliffhanger in a show about nothing? The only reason I continued to watch the show during the whole horrifyingly drawn- out courtroom sequence is so I'd know how it ended and, thereby, be hip to a useless bit of "watercooler" trivia. Used to love that show, but, for me, it ran out of gas a couple of years ago and went out not with a bang but a groan. Oh well. It's just TV. Here;s an idea- Maybe he wanted to make an episode SO bad, that nobody would WANT him to come back and make another show! Sorta a "the producers" type mentality...make the audience WANT the show to end.,,(except 'springtime for Hitler' was funny). Well, remember, if you REALLY need a good, long lived sit-com, there is always "The Simpsons"- and "king of the hill", which is actually consistantly funnier. Ok, back to talking about Robyn... This *is* the Robyn list, right? First off, I should state that I never followed "Seinfeld" and didn't see this episode. But my comments don't have to do with that so much, rather with the above observation. It strikes me as similar to what David Lynch did with "Fire Walk With Me". At least, I for one felt that that movie was a giant joke on people who had followed "Twin Peaks" and I wasn't really amused. Others have disagreed with me on this but I stand by how I felt when I saw it. To paraphrase John Lydon, I got the feeling I'd been cheated. >Here;s an idea- Maybe he wanted to make an episode SO bad, >that nobody would WANT him to come back and make another show! >Sorta a "the producers" type mentality...make the audience >WANT the show to end.,,(except 'springtime for Hitler' was funny). And this is the other reason I brought up "Fire Walk With Me", because I felt that that was part of the motivation behind that movie as well. Not that I thought it was -bad-, necessarily, more that it was just so baffling and so obviously a put-on (perhaps self-parody would be stretching it, but not by much), that I have to conclude that at least one of the goals was to make sure nobody wanted any more "Twin Peaks". Too bad that FWWM didn't live up to your expectations, but to say that this was Lynch's intention couldn't be further from the truth. The "baffling" elements (new characters, the Bowie scenes and the meaning of the ring) were included for possible future films. I could argue why I feel that FWWM is a great film, but others have tried and that hasn't swayed you. As for Lynch's intentions, let me set the record straight with these quotes: "At the end of the series, I felt sad. I couldn't get myself to leave the world of Twin Peaks. I was in love with the character of Laura Palmer and her contradictions: radiant on the surface but dying inside. I wanted to see her live, move and talk. I was in love with that world and I hadn't finished with it. But making the movie wasn't just to hold on to it: it seemed that there was more stuff that could be done. But the parade had gone by. It was over. During the year that it took to make the film, everything changed. That's the way it happens, sometimes." "There's often something in the air that keeps people from actually seeing the work for what it is. There's something else that's maybe not real that they're reacting to more than the work. If some time goes by, they see the same thing again, but now it's more worthwhile. That happens sometimes. I feel bad that FWWM did no business and that a lot of people hate the film. I really like the film, but it had a lot of baggage with it. It's as free and experimental as it could be within the dictates it had to follow." FWWM is a jazz version of Twin Peaks. Watch it again. It requires several viewings to begin to understand the complexity and multiplicity of themes- an effort many are not willing to expend (no wonder critics hated it!)
