From an interview with Andy Partridge I read long ago (and recall only sporadically), Vanishing Girl is meant to be a pastiche of The Hollies; the Byrds track may be You're My Drug, since this one's drenched in twelve-string guitar--my favorite sound in the universe, I might add. Think Eight-Miles-High-Mr.-Spaceman-5D-era Byrds. Another track is supposed to be Screaming Lord Sutch, but I'm afraid I'm not familiar with his music, so I couldn't tell you which one. IMO, they were a vehicle for XTC to express themselves via a more artificial, "engineered" sound, a direction they had taken for some time. The previous XTC disc, "Skylarking," was produced by Todd Rundgren, notorious indeed for his studio tricks. Funny that given Partridge's postpartum distaste for Rundgren's tightly-wound "musical gas chamber" approach (as I recall him terming it), the Dukes tabbed John Leckie as producer. Leckie is legend for his engineering talents and uncommunicative nature. I don't think he added much to Robyn's sonic palette. "Chips from the Chocolate Fireball" basically collects the whole of the Dukes output. Any mainstream net CD mail-house would carry it. Some of my fave "XTC" songs are Dukes items. "Your Gold Dress," "What in the World," "Have You Seen Jackie?," "...Albert Brown," "Collideascope," and "Shiny Cage" are all corkers. "Psonic Psunspot" isn't THAT psychedlic. It closely resembles "Skylarking." The "25 O'Clock" mini-lp is the real view from the windowpane. See! Life sucks! You ask for a little bit of info, and you get a mock rawk crit exegesis :) Ted _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
