There are many, many more hotels and motels in my area -- I will throw a few out on the page later tonight. The cheapest is the local Motel 666 -- er, Mortel 6, that is -- which is ten minutes from my house, and usually charges about $27.95 for a single room. This is where all the local high school kids take their prom dates for a cheap room, and the aura of sleaze that surrounds the place is more Richard Linklater than David Lynch, so it's not that bad. . . . there's even a machine downstairs that dispenses coke, toothpaste, and condoms. Has anyone ever figured out the original songs/groups that the Dukes are spoofing? "25 O'Clock" is definitely "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night" by the Electric Prunes, "Mole From The Ministry" is "I Am The Walrus" by the Beatles, "Pale And Precious" is the Beach Boys ("Caroline, No", perhaps?), "Vanishing Girl" could be the Byrds, "Bike Ride To The Moon" could be the Floyd, "My Love Explodes" might be the Who. I'm also thinking that "...Albert Brown..." could be a spoof of Mungo Jerry ("In The Summertime"), The New Vaudville Band ("Winchester Cathedral"), the Jim Kweskin Jug Band or even the Bonzo Dog Band. Any other suggestions? Has anyone else figured out any more of the spoofs? Also, wasn't Peter Buck involved in a project not too long ago that parodied sixties groups in much the same way the Dukes did? - -g- n.p. Please don't delay with part 2! I find the whole parenthetical section rather offensive. Frankly, it reads like a recruiting poster for the Quail Coven! I'm deeply afraid that any innocent young people on this list (and I think that describes the majority of Fegs) might be led astray. Who wouldn't want to follow the Quail, if that's an accurate description of his coven? Hell, I'm tempted. You must always be careful not to glorify the depraved existence (I can hardly call it a "life") of the Quail cultist. An analogy: US Fegs may recall one of the most inspiring moments of the 1996 Presidential campaign, when Sen. Bob Dole (Dhole?) denounced the movie _Trainspotting_ for glorifying drug abuse (cf NY Times, 19 Sept. 1996). (I believe he then went on to denounce _All Quiet on the Western Front_ for glorifying war.) Think of the children, Dave, think of the children! The slightest intellectual or artistic misstep might doom legions of the wee ones to a lifetime of vice or corruption. In fact, even us adults are at risk -- Bob "Mr. Character" Dole hadn't even seen _Trainspotting_ and was just reading whatever his handlers put in front of him, presumably to avoid the risk of becoming a heroin addict himself. Of course it's already been demonstrated that, as a non-Marxist, I must ipso facto be a right-wing conservative; therefore I respect and admire Bob Dole. Everyone should follow his example. Don't worship the Quail and don't glorify his worshippers. Just say Don't Do It! > coming up soon to this space, the Quailfire Club and the great Squid, > tropical flesh mandala’s and more Cambridge capers...... Cambridge capers are just the thing to garnish a quail's egg and squid omelette! - --Chris PS: In case you're wondering why I'm bothering to kick poor old Bob Dole at this late date, he is actually giving the Commencement speech at George Washington University, where I work. Bleah ... Oh, well, Roy Lichtenstein spoke at *my* GWU Commencement. ______________________________________________________________________ Christopher Gross On the Internet, nobody knows I'm a dog. chrisg@gwu.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 14:10:06 -0700 From: "G.
