The full schedule of the fesitval hasn't been released yet, so maybe it's showing more than once, but from the Castro Theater calendar (paper version - www.thecastro.com hasn't been updated yet) lists it as showing Tuesday, April 28 at 9:30 pm. Or did someone already mention this? I just rejoined the list, and haven't perused all the recent archives. I haven't heard of this book, but like others, I had assumed that the reference was to the Egyptian god of that name. However, another possibility is that Cain and Abel had a wee brother Seth (there was a religious sect of Sethians who worshipped him). Incidentally, it's a useful name if you want a rhyme for 'death'. - - Mike Godwin PS on film locations: Gerald Kaufman calculates that Julie Andrews must have been cycling at about 100mph to cover all the sights of Salzburg which appear during the song(?) I wasn't goint to go but I ended up calling a local radio station and getting on their guest list. Before the movie, Louis Black(Austin Chronicle) talked about his love for Demme(he's a big Caged Heat fan) and Demme's connection with Austin. Then SH's producers came out to applause. Next Demme came out with two of his kids and gave a short speech followed by Robyn with some humorous observations regarding age and stage lighting, among other things. On to the movie, 15 songs, mostly just Robyn. I think Deni played on 2 and Captain Keegan(?) played on one. Damned if I can't remember the songs. I'm sure some Feg will clue us in. About half the songs were pre-Mossy(Freeze, Airscape, Yip Song). A few new songs I've read about here like 1974. The film was well shot, considering it's basically Robyn standing in front of a window. Fruit and cones made appearances as well as people peeking into the window. Now to the meat(sorry Robyn) of the film, Robyn's performance. His stories were entertaining and often laugh-out-loud funny. IMO, the songs played second fiddle to the stories, as far as entertainment value. I must admit that I don't find his current songs as entertaining as some of his previous work. They seem to lack the surrealism that I find so interesting in his stories. I was worried that I would get bored but the film flew by quickly. Good mixture of songs and stories kept the pace varied. I think fans will like the movie but I don't see it converting many people into fegs. Again, this is just my opinion. I'll be interested to read comments by more hardcore fegs. I know they were there as I heard them clapping after songs. I brought my girlfriend with me(a neophyte) and she really enjoyed the movie. Some of Robyn's rants were just terrific, especially his take on religion. I hope these make it to the soundtrack album. vince ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Mar 1998 08:54:35 -0500 From: "Runion-1, Michael" Subject: Chat Questions Some of the questions compiled for today's chat... 1) What are your hopes for the success of the movie and how are they different from Jonathan Demme's? 2) You've done the solo "have guitar will travel" thing for a while now (with help from a few friends, of course). Any chance of a return to a fuller "band" format anytime soon? 3) Please tell us more about the book that is rumored to be in the works? 4) It seems that a disproportionate number of your fans are themselves musicians or aspiring musicians. To what do you attribute this? 5) Does your daughter (Maisie?) have any plans to pursue a musical career like her Dad? 6) What are some of the new records or artists you have enjoyed most over the last year? 7) How much do you value commercial success? What would you be prepared to sacrifice to get it? 8) Your songs seem to change very little between first public airing and final recording. How do you get a new song ready to present to an audience? 9) Some of us who participate in the "Fegmaniax" Internet mailing list have noticed a few of the stranger discussion topics cropping up--only a few days later--in your between-song chat at recent gigs. Is this mere serendipity, or are you (or someone you know) ever tempted to take a peek at some of those online discussions? 10) Although we were all delighted to have the "extra" material that was released on Mossy Liquor last year, many were disappointed that it was only available on a recording format popular before they were born. Are there any more limited releases in the plan? If so, what format will they be on? 11) Will you ever bring back the piano into your live gigs? Or have you done anymore composing of songs on the piano since Direct Me To The Cheese?? Something like that. I miss that pianer!!! 12) Is the soundtrack to "Storefront Hitchcock" a double CD? 13) Why don't you put out material more often? 14) "What's your favorite movie of all time?", "If you could belong to any one of the major food groups, which one would it be?" and "If there were a Robyn Hitchcock board game, would you be more likely to play that or Yahtzee?" 15) Did you ever get to hear the Glass Flesh tribute CD that the Fegmaniax Internet Mailing List put out? 16) Do you still think of us all as "fiends"? 17) Does Maisie still like Nine Inch Nails? Also, the session started late and ended early. I suspect many interesting questions were probably discarded by the moderators from SPIN. - - John H. Hedges - ------------------------------------------------- Question: Is this your first time at SXSW? RobynSPIN: No - 93, 95, 96. Question: What's your favorite song? RobynSPIN: That would be Visions of Johanna by Bob Dylan... Question: Robyn, how long have you known Billy Bragg? RobynSPIN: Bill? I must have met him around '89. Through REM. We were both part of the REM circus so I would come across him at those particular ceremonies. Question: How did you get started in the music business? RobynSPIN: Through social maladjustment. An inability to relate to people without wanting to be the center of attention. The consequences were inevitable. SPINspy: So how does that work in live situations where you are the center? RobynSPIN: Theoretically, it should be perfect. But obviously, I'm talking about many years ago. Now playing live is quite terrifying. Why are all those people looking at me? Because of things I did years ago. It's the ego thing. I could have been a politician or a movie star...It's that prime motive. SPINspy: What do you think about "Storefront Hitchcock" the upcoming documentary about you? RobynSPIN: I basically hope that it finds a distributor. SPINspy: How was it working with Jonathan Demme? RobynSPIN: Excellent. He's really good. And his organization's a pleasure to work with. I'm hoping to persuade him to a follow-up. In the gondola of a zepellin, floating off the coast...The zeppelin will obviously be flying neutral colors. Any dirigible conforming to required safety standards with a modicum of shall we say, direction vis a vis wind atmospheric conditions, etcetera, would be right on. BQuaranta: Robyn! I have a question...do all of your songs have meaning, or just some? It's easy to see in "My favorite Buildings" or "My wife and my dead wife" or "Egyptian Cream," but it's a little harder to figure out "BAss" or "The Bones in the Ground." RobynSPIN: Some of them... let's see... The shortest answer is, Yes, they all have a meaning. sometimes the meanings get overlaid on top of each other and become opaque. That doesn't in my opinion diminish the value of the song; if anything it requires a longer exposure to the song for the listener to get the full nutrience from said song. JH3: Hi, Robyn! Aren't online chats a complete waste of time? And how's the new album coming along? RobynSPIN: IF you say so buddy. It's all but finished, thanks. JudyB1209: I know you worked with Peter Buck and Michael STipe on Perspex- any other collarboration with REM coming up? RobynSPIN: I did an instore with Mike Mills here in Austin, Waterloo Records, in 1993... Yes, Peter is playing guitar on the new album. He's very good. Kare Kare: Do you find fans remember your older material better than you do? (I find some of them worrisome at concerts!) RobynSPIN: It may mean more to them than it does to me, but obviously the longer something has been lodged in your head, the deeper the stain it leaves in there. JH3: Do you think you'd ever go back to working with a complete band in live situations? RobynSPIN: Not for any length of time. But I am assembling an All Stars outfit for an upcoming show in London. Terri Edwards - he used to be in the Higsons and might tour with Lydia Lunch soon; also in there is Ntshuks Bonga who's an indescribable horn player. They'll be our horn section if we can weld them together. Kimberley Rew who used to be in The Soft Boys and Katrina and the Waves is playing guitar, and so is Tim Keegan of the Homer Lounge fame. But that's just really for one gig. Paulsky86: Will the soundtrack for Storefront be a double CD? RobynSPIN: A single CD, but a double LP with a gatefold sleeve. BQuaranta: Serious question: my friends and I think that "My favorite buildings" is about people dying from AIDS, and "The Man with the light-bulb head" is about a father threatening to have sex with his son. Are we basically on target, or way off? RobynSPIN: Favorite Buildings, that's a great theory. I wish I'd thought of that... Lightbulb Head - not so specific, but yes, the parent is threatening the child... they just have to, don't they. But then the kids can threaten the parents or they can abuse their own kids. Humanity is the history of revenge. NOWact: Would you consider your songs to be more personally or politically based? RobynSPIN: Not politically. AMS5: Why the obsession with fish? RobynSPIN: What obsession with fish? Paulsky86: Robyn, did you ever get a chance to hear "Glass Flesh", the tribute CD put out by the Fegmaniax mailing list? RobynSPIN: Yes, thank you. Conetwelv: Hi Robyn, When will you tour in the South again. Love to see you in Nashville. Do you find yourself listening to much country music? Perhaps the good old timey stuff? RobynSPIN: Can't say I do, but it's always good to play in Nashville. Hopefully within the next year I'll be back. NOWact: Robyn, how did you successfully dodge the whole 'rock star' stereotype for so long? RobynSPIN: Have I? Maybe I'm just broadening it... Luther IW: I've often wondered who the Duck Princess is. Is it Cynthia? RobynSPIN: The duck princess is a tragic misspelling. I am not at this time, nor ever have been - so my aides tell me - involved with any duck princess, but I think you mean The Dark Princess... Paulsky86: What's up with the book we keep hearing about? Will it be coming out any time soon? RobynSPIN: Glad you've taken the hint. As soon as I can close the lid on the characters who are babbling away inside it, the book will be finished. I'd like to see it published a year from now. Luther IW: Where is Tim Keegan these days, Robyn? He's a nice chap...a genuinely pleasant fellow. RobynSPIN: Tim is right outside the door now. Making faces at us. He's just been having coffee with the Dark Princess. Paulsky86: What's your relationship with Julian Cope? I know you've spoken in the past, and you've covered his songs occasionally. RobynSPIN: Uh... I don't know him very well, but we enjoy the occasional long chat. He's a very enthusiastic person. He's got a book coming out soon bout megolithic British sites - something my father was also interested in. JH3: Will the next album cover be a photo of you, a painting/drawing *by* you, or something else entirely? RobynSPIN: What would you like? Conetwelv: Thanks for the Cones, Robyn. What will be your next promotional delight? RobynSPIN: Natalie Merchant matchbooks. The cheese I do not mention is mimolette, from the French/Netherlands border. SPINspy: One final comment... RobynSPIN: The movie is being shown at the Castro theater in San Francisco on April 28, and that will be its first showing outside of Austin. And I will probably do a show in SF around that time. SPINspy: That would be "Storefront Hitchcock" directed by Jonathan Demme. Thank you very much Robyn...and thank you all for coming! THE END ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Mar 98 16:34:34 -0500 From: The Great Quail Subject: The Great East Coast Feg Gathering Oh ye Fegs, I apologize to the rest of the List, but who knows -- maybe this will cause some of you to use up some Frequent Flyer miles! Recently, LJ, Bayard, and myself have been discussing throwing a Feg party, an East Coast Gathering, yes, a hootenanny to shake the heavens. I've never been at a hootenanny, or at least I don't think I have, and I think it's high time that I took care of this regrettable situation. So. . . . What about it? I am thinking of May 16 as a potential date, and the location would be my house in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. We are, actually, the capital of this grand Commonwealth, *not* Pittsburgh or Philly, as you may recall if you remember your 8th grade geography. This gathering would start around 3 pm and could possibly involve the following things: 1. A yummy barbecue: hot dogs, hamburgers, prawns, squid -- the usual suspects 2. Lots and lots of beer and coffee 3. Fun music 4. Opportunities to *make* fun music -- bring an instrument or disaffected Beach Boy of your choice! 5. Opportunities to trade and tape RH cassettes: I have one T2T deck, and many electrical sockets for others. 6. An utterly harmless trip to a local Crop Circle at a special but secret time. 7. Lots and lots of beer and coffee 8. A doorprize: Robyn's 1989 autographed guitar *and* piano, to be graciously donated by Eb 9. A screening of Robyn related videos and movies, like "Man with the Lightbulb Head" and "Titanic." 10. A game of Spin-the-Bottle with LJ as hostess 11. Fun photograph opportunities to add to Nick's page 12. Fegs can bring their CONES and we can put them all together in a room and see what happens overnight. . . . 13. A sleepover! I have plenty of room, and it would be fun to see who shacks up with whom! 14. Dancing! The living room can be cleared to dance, for any Fegs brave/crazy/drunk enough to cut loose and break my little ceramic quail knick-knacks. 15. Lots and lots of beer and coffee 16. Bagels, aspirin, and coffee in the morning 17. A Sunday noon religious service to Thoth, where we sacrifice any neighbors and policemen who came to investigate the prior evening. I would also like to add that Fegs can certainly bring a guest or two, provided they keep any pets larger than 2.67 ounces at home; and being a Deadhead from many years back, I have no objections to any mild personal recreational entertainments that go outside the limits of #2, 7, and 14 above; and I additionally swear I *never* hosted such an event for the Gong List. Harrisburg is conveniently located in central PA, and is: About 45 minutes from York and Lancaster An hour and a half from Penn State and Allentown Two or so hours from Wilkes-Barre, Baltimore, and Philadelphia Three or so hours from Washington DC and New York City Four or so hours from Pittsburgh Six-Eight hours from various places in New England, Virginia, and Ohio 60 or so hours from California, providing you drive all night long really fast 156 Hours away from Australia and New Zealand, providing you give the platypi enough amphetamines to paddle on through the nights. . . . So you see, most of us should be able to make it! My house is on a small plot of land, and though it has a large porch, it is set into the side of a hill, so outdoor sports must be confined to lawn darts and shooting randomly at passersby. It is fairly secluded, and has three narrow storeys, so there is space for a chill-out room, a musical gatheringplace, a small dancefloor, and a wombatorium for you Aussies in attendance. One small warning: I own two cats, so those with allergies (me included) be prepared. I was also thinking of this as an idea: every Feg guest brings a 60-90 minute mixed tape of their personal favorote songs (One imposed Limit: Two Robyn songs?). These tapes are then placed in a big wicker Thoth-head and then we have a random drawing later in the evening . . . ? So, in closing, I think we can have a grand old time. All interested parties please email me privately, and I will set up a seperate mailing list for the party, where we can discuss other ideas, travel directions, and the locations of Taco Bell restaurants along the way. Also, May 16 is tentative, so let me know if another date would be better. . . . - --Quail - ---------------------------------+-------------------------------- The Great Quail, K.S.C. | Literature Site - The Libyrinth: TheQuail@cthulhu.microserve.com | www.rpg.net/quail/libyrinth www.rpg.net/quail | Vampire Site - New York by Night: riverrun Discordian Society | www.rpg.net/quail/NYBN 73 De Chirico Street | Arkham, Orbis Tertius 2112-42 | ** What is FEGMANIA? ** "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents." -- H.P. I don't really have any burning questions I'm aching to ask Robyn at this stage of his career, so I wouldn't waste his time finding just ANYTHING to ask, like whether his daughter liked NIN and other banal yes/no Entertainment Tonight-type queries. But if I HAD to ask something, I suppose I might ask about his shaky relationship with producers, and why his albums so frequently fall victim to poorly chosen producers. And why he hasn't learned to avoid this yet, after 20 years. Yeah, it's not a nice question, but that's what comes to mind. Or perhaps something about what we've discussed at length here, regarding the difficult tug-of-war between a veteran artist "maturing" yet "keeping things fresh." To be fair though, those online chats NEVER seem to have much substance. I've read transcripts of various chats and personally eavesdropped on two of them (REM and Prince), and they were all really superficial too. The nature of the beast, I suppose.
