But, I have seen people run for them thar hills and all being due to our man's voice. I would dare to say that in many cases it is annoying to a degree, but therein lies the attraction. The voice holds a lot of people back, but is what attract many as well. A two laned street or whatever drive-on thingy in your local area. road conditions may change before you reach your destination, .chris (who wishes he could do the math and figure out how many StorefrontHitchcocks he could see in a local theater for the price of one in Austin; probably a null set answer since no local theater will carry it here, but if I bend the concept of local I might be able to do the math) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 23:17:35 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: Jandek MARKEEFE wrote: >For those of you unfamiliar with Jandek, Spin once named him one of >their top 10 artists of the 80's, describing his music in such a way that I >immediately started trying to hunt down his LPs (with occassional success). >It's super-creepy, haunting music -- the kind of stuff that is so subtly and >deeply chilling that it's hard to shake off. >Anyway, the direct link to the page where >thesnewer Jandek titles are listed for sale is: > >http://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/jandek.html For more information, check http://cs.nwu.edu/~tisue/jandek/ Gonna paint my teeth, Eb ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 01:58:19 EST From: KarmaFuzzz@aol.com Subject: Re: one prawn swimming against the tide In a message dated 98-02-10 23:47:02 EST, gondola@deltanet.com writes: << PS If you really want to treat my last post as a "test," let's say that I would be impressed if anyone could identify the main bands of all these names: John S. Anyway, if there wasn't such a built-in bias against anything I post, folks would realize that the point of my list was NOT to brag about musical knowledge (hey, I bet none of you are familiar with Mick Jagger and Neil Young like me, eh?), but to ridicule Morrissey. And to be humorous along the way, by citing reviled creatures like a-ha, Falco, etc. >the best way to >demonstrate vast music knowledge is to either pick up an instrument and >join a band, ??? >Constant attempts at one-upmanship can grow boring. Boy, are you talking out of two sides of your mouth here. Kindly thumb back to the recent Julian Cope and "Hey, I'm new -- what's Glass Flesh?" threads for some stunning examples of panting oneupmanship. And just about every time a new sweet young thing introduces herself to the list, the whole "Surreal Posse" starts strutting and prancing about, flashing their peacock feathers.... Eh? And yet which of these two objectives takes up > more space on this list, hmm? Am I the only person who enjoys -both-? I'm actually pretty interested in absorbing people's musical knowledge. Though I'll agree that Eb's list was a bit longish, given the point he was trying to make. > Robert Smith is fairly annoying, but not quite enough that I'd put him on > the list. But I don't own Cure records. I will, though. Although this could just have to do with the fact that the Cure, like Ween, are annoying to me simply by virtue of the fact that they even exist. Although the Cure may have the edge, since they have a larger number of annoying mopey teenage fans. You know, when I was 13 or so I was very into the Cure and Bauhaus and wore black lipstick and all that hoo-ha, only at -that- time it had not yet become any sort of fad. The same kids who laughed at me then later became goths and talked about how "deep" they were. This may have a -bit- to do with my feelings concerning this band, but mostly my feelings have to do with the fact that in my opinion, which you are more than welcome to not share, they suck. > PS If you really want to treat my last post as a "test," let's say that I > would be impressed if anyone could identify the main bands of all these > names: John S. Hall,- King Missile Calvin Johnson,- oh geez, all I can think of is k records. Beat Happening? Tuli Kupferberg,- The fugs Peter Stampfel,- dbs? one of those power pop outfits critics like, I remember that much :) :) (tongue firmly in cheek) Gibby Haynes- you knew he was a Butthole Surfer. Bet you didn't know his dad was a children's TV host named "Mr. Peppermint". I did because I grew up watching it. Corin Tucker- you mean Mo? > Scott Miller - young fresh fellows? Jad Fair.- a male prostitute for the FBI!!! :) I'll leave that stone unturned, because I love a mystery. (Not that I want the list clogged up with > submitted answers.) Too late! :) I think this stuff is fun. I -like- quizzes. Love on ya, Susan ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V7 #52 ******************************
