If anyone taped the show I'd welcome an e-mail off list as I would really enjoy listening to it again. I felt last night's show was the perfect Robyn gig. As an old 'Softie' the biggest thrill was seeing Robyn and Kimberley head off into the night after their soundcheck, presumably for an evening meal somewhere and anticipating seeing Kimberley play for the first time since 1981. (Incidentally, I can't imagine R&K dining at McDonalds - I wonder where would they go to eat out?) Suzy Hug jumped on stage about 9pm and charmed and entertained the neutral crowd, silencing the noisy element with a few intelligent words before her set began. Jake from Homer backed her up on guitar. By the final song she had won over the whole audience with a very good support act. As she left the room I spotted Kimberley standing by the door congratulating her. Big R took the stage about 10.15pm with Lets Go Thundering and followed this with 52 Stations, Cheese Alarm, Trilobyte, that Furs song (News of the Day?) and others before switching to Telecaster. Robyn filled his set with plenty of stream of conciousness ad libbing chat. Kimberley joined in for the last 20 minutes and they played Queen of Eyes, Face of Death and - my absolute favourite - Insanely Jealous ( I felt smug at this point having shouted out "How about IJ!" a little earlier). They played Waterloo Sunset as an encore. Robyn enjoyed himself and left the stage with a cheerful "See you in July". Leonard Cohen's Greatest Hits. 2. Berlin by Lou Reed 3. Way to Blue by Nick Drake No real quarrels there, though I don't think that Greatest Hits albums really 'count', and I would have thought that the second Cohen LP was a more valid entry. I didn't see any Richard Thompson in the list. On the dead wives front, there was a prog advertised on Welsh TV last night about a bloke called Sir John Price of Newtown who had both his dead wives stuffed, and used to sleep between them! While I feel compelled at times to correct the occasional slip o' the pen (like the recent VU thread with Sunday Morning inadvertently called Monday Morning), I rarely do so because it will inevitably be commented upon ad nauseum. Then again, I think "Burning Airlines..", track one on Eno's TTMBS is more similar to "Monday Morning", track one on the divine Fleetwood Mac eponymous than "Sunday Morning" off of VU & Nico. Had to do it..... But what I was writing to discuss was a CD that I have not removed from my CD player in some time, Eliot Smith's Either/Or. I first heard his songs while watching Good Will Hunting. Being an Oregon Feg, I was jazzed to see local do-gooder Gus Van Zant make such an excellent and accessible film, and as soon as I heard the couple of tunes Elliot Smith contributed, I was hooked. (Elliot hails from Portland as well). This CD is stronger song for song than most anything I heard in the past year, and really beautiful. I'm writing this because I know many on this list are interested in discovering other artists, and value the opinions and musical tastes of the everyfeg. I know I do. The album is a solo acoustic guitar affair, a la Robyn's Eye, though he plays drums and bass on a couple of numbers. The guy has a knack for melody like nobodys business and he's not constantly brooding like so many artists these days. Tremendous CD and I highly recommend it (Kill Rock Stars Records, never available from BMG or Columbia House ... I hope). Anybody else get a warm fuzzy from Mr. Smith? And a big hello to all of you. Anyone got a clue about this one? > I seem to remember reading something about this gig on the jangly mailing list (jangly being devoted to the music of Martin Newell and Captain Sensible, as far as I can tell from the postings I've seen there- it's supposed to be a list devoted to Martin Newell and "jangly pop" in general, but I see more there about Captain Sensible than anything). I'd say that my memory is probably somewhat reliable on this, given that jangly seems to generate one or two mails a month, if that, so naturally I remember them better than I would mails from this or the JOhn Cale list, where people write a fair amount, plus it had to do with Robyn. I had heard the gig was "planned", and heard no more, which is why I didn't mention it here. Apparently it actually -did- happen. Would you have to register for the whole thing (to >the tune of a couple hundred bucks) in order to attend this premiere? > >Time for a word from the Austin Experts! > Well, here's what I know so far: First off, the film festival and music conference are separate entities. You don't need a wristband to see a single music showcase nor do you need a film pass to see a particular film, but if the number of people with wristbands or passes outnumbers the capacity of the venue "walk-ups" will be turned away. The Demme film is scheduled for the 19th, which is in the middle of the festival. This could work in our favor...the crowds are the largest earlier on. It's also the second night of the music conference...another conflict of interest...could mean smaller crowds. The Paramount holds maybe 1100 people at most, but I still think the odds of getting in are pretty grim...and if you're thinking about buying a pass, I think they're about 170 bucks. It sure looks like nobody wants us to see this movie.
