Fegs, This is what Carl Jung (not Sting, thank you) would call Synchronicity. JUST LAST WEEK, after a couple of years of not sending in points, I called Maxell to get the info others have posted- Not valid anymore. Unlike some others, though, I managed to fill in some nice gaps in my CD collection via Max Points (mainly Beatles stuff already owned on vinyl that I couldn't justify buying again even though I wanted them on CD like most folks because, after all, The Beatles were great as all Fegs agree and no collection is complete without every single one of their releases filed in chronological order in your collection). Did it take a lot of points to get them? Well, perhaps, but I buy A LOT of tapes (ask a certain Bay Area Feg about volume), so I was going to have them anyway and, hey, why not get something for free via something you were going to buy anyway? So I did. Must say, I'm most sad the promotion is over and I'm considering buying Realistic brand tapes as a result of this creeping feeling of betrayal. ;) Blinking On And Off... Jay H. << I just finished labeling a Maxell cassette tape and have saved the "10 MAX PTS" sticker from the label sheet in a drawer with 37 others that I have saved from other Maxell tapes I've labeled over the last couple of years. I keep thinking that someday I'll be able to use these for something, but I've never seen any sort of catalog of "free stuff you get with your Max Pts." Has anyone on this list ever seen any promotions from Maxell utilizing these proofs of purchase? Why am I collecting these? Are you too just saving them for some unknown reason?? If I can only figure this out, then life will make sense... ms >> ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 22:10:44 -0600 From: Dave Librik Subject: Re: a diversion into linguistics (WHY???) 'pretani' isn't a Roman word for "natives" -- it seems to be what the natives were calling themselves, or at least their country. Nobody really knows why it was called that, but everybody will be willing to make something up if you ask them. The "wealh" word that "Wales" is the plural of -- this is Anglo-Saxon for "foreigner." It seems to mean mostly Celtic or Roman foreigners. The cheekiness of calling the native peoples of the country you're grabbing "foreigners" is only matched by ... well, calling the natives of the country you're grabbing "folks from India" ... :) Cymry (the Welsh word for themselves) actually came from a word "com-brogos," where "com" is the usual "together" prefix (as in "comrade", "community," etc.), and "brogos" are the people from a neighborhood, an area, a "bro." So it's something like "compatriots," "fellow-countrymen," or "homies." I know I'm just totally playing into Capuchin's idea that everybody but him speaks Welsh (ssh! don't let on about the secret Welsh-language-only Feglist!) but it's really just that Robyn's style attracts people who love big interesting words. I mean, I *like* all that Lovecraftian verbosity Robyn throws around -- it's a big part of why I listen to him. So I think this may be why so many language-lovers love Hitchcock lyrics. (This may apply better to his 80s stuff than to his 90s turn towards short, stark, simple repetition -- but we can always rely on his offhand flights of fancy during concerts to give us our dose of descriptive adjectives!) - - David "Dafydd" Librik librik@jaka.ece.uiuc.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 23:28:40 -0500 From: woj Subject: feg archives also sprach Bayard: >ps. did someone say something about a feg-keg party at susan's? i am *so* >there dude.... Eb must have an advanced promo copy, which leads me to the question, "Why the hell don't *I* have an advanced promo copy yet?!" For those not in the know, NMH's 1996 album "On Avery Island" (Merge records) is great singer-songwriter, Javanese-inflected, fuzz-toned, catchy, droney, trombone-infused indie rock. . . plus I used to work (at Wax Trax, in Denver) with all the guest musicians on the album! Not that that would mean anything to anyone else, but I thought it was cool when I found out (which was, BTW, after I had purchased and grown to love the album). The new album is due to be released sometime next month, I believe. Pretty sure I saw the release date at icemagazine.com. - -----Michael K. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V7 #34 ******************************
