Robert? Robin? The guy who does "My Wife and My Dead Wife." Can't recall his name. Anyway, most of the records I got in the latter half of the year were by him. Top place must be awarded to the tape of "Stand Back Dennis/Live Death" that Steve Schiavo kindly sent me and which subsequently latched onto my stereo like a vicious carnivore sinking its teeth into the tender throat of its prey, snarling and savaging anyone who attempted to remove it. Second place goes to "Underwater Moonlight," which behaved with similar brutality. Other discoveries: Martin Newell, "The Greatest Living Englishman" - hardly earth-shaking but very pleasant. Nice seeing him live when I was in the UK. Brian Eno, "Before and After Science" - "Spider and I" is the most beautiful song ever written. The Kinks, "Village Green Preservation Society" - a little too twee for my taste but there's some good stuff there. Stereolab, "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" (thanks, Doc) - Laetitia Sadler (?) has a wonderfully glacial voice. I wish I knew what she was saying. Biggest disappointment: The Verve, "Urban Hymns." I adored "Bittersweet Symphony," ran out and bought the album, and got track after track of turgid nothing that sounded like a slightly superior Oasis - which isn't saying much. Feh. Stuff I need to check out: This Dan Bern fellow you've been mentioning The Can compilation CD that's been sitting on my floor for three months The Kinks, "Something Else" Galaxie 500, "Copenhagen" - I always forget how much I love this band. Eagerly awaited: "Storefront Hitchcock" (movie and soundtrack) The near-mythical forthcoming (??) XTC album Television: "Babylon 5" - this show keeps getting better and better. Catch it in reruns on TNT, they're showing it from the beginning. The best science fiction on television, bar none. "South Park" - pure animated dementia. Books: This year I stumbled across those fellows that the Great Quail likes so much - Borges, Garcia Marquez, Cortazar (do you like Cortazar, O feathered one? "Axolotl" is just your speed). Great stuff. Also read lots of books on midwifery and now know what "AROM" stands for. Comic Books: Grant Morrison's wacky anarcho-occult bundle of fun known as "The Invisibles" continues its rampage. Learn all about Aztec gods, the King-of-All-Tears, the end of the world, the Hand of Glory, and much, much more! I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of for now. n. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 16:18:30 +0100 From: daniele Subject: KR vs. SG Hi guys... Chris, I remind you that I am from that biggest of little cities from whence your emails shine. I would take serious offense to your chronicles if they were not true. Sadly, my high school years were not filled with tobacco and alcohol related curricula and I was at a significant disadvantage when I reached the institute of higher chemical consumption that we know as UNR. LA was still hell from there. Perhaps I have been in the area too long to which Robyn refers as "for people who can't handle San Francisco" and my brain, or what is left of it that is in a jar over there and only partially attached to the base of my skull with chewing gum and jumper cables that the Great Quail wrote for my pitiful character in this frightening charade- oh, where was I, yes, my brain has gone terribly soft. >Mr. Tews spoke: >>it just struck me that i don't have enought supertramp albums. >This is sick and wrong. Do you mean that I "have [not burned] enough" >of said products. Things must have changed since I was at Nye Hall at UNR. My steady diet of Old Milwaukee, Take the Long Way Home, and toga parties is most of what I remember fondly from that geological age in my life. Of course, I attended the "school" when it was merely a front for the athletic department. I'm sure THAT's changed. In any case, I'm happy to be able to live in the 'unreal west' (tm), where we can safely listen to Robyn Hitchcock while using our Macintosh computers to do wonderful things. Occasionally people say bad things about our Macs and this causes our heads to explode or worse, but that adds much richness to the fegplot which continues to spin out of control. I'll send out some year's bests when I can remember them. The Great Quail hasn't given my character much to work with upstairs, though. Please be patient. At least Sydney sends me correspondence to keep my random synaptic jolts firing in some rhythmatic intervals that makes the musical soundtrack that accompanies the life of this character. My personal soundtrack is composed like the beautific music of the spheres, but is played like Bob Dylan plays the harmonica, backed by the Ramones whacking brass poles with their crania, trying to perform Cagesque Styx songs to impress King Crimson fans, while skiing like Sonny Bono down tree-infested hillsides to turn the heads of Claudine Longet and her fans in the new swimsuit edition of Audiophile magazine. I feel like making a sojourn through the land of Quail to find the great one. I am like the scarecrow, wanting a brain. I also want a heart and some courage, but y'know, there's no band like Kansas. This is TGQ's fault. I wouldn't have said horrible, obscure stuff like this entire paragraph on my own. Why is he doing this? You know, I really don't buy this gripe. Have you actually HEARD "anything and everything," or are you just writing him off based on "I'll Be Missing You"? Because you know, "I'll Be Missing You" is probably the worst track on the whole album. If you actually listen to the entire Puff Daddy disc, there are only three or four songs which depend strongly on associations with pre-existing music. One track borrows the riff from Bowie's "Let's Dance," another uses the film score of Rocky and another borrows the chorus of Diana Ross' "Theme From 'Mahogany.'" Other tracks use samples too, but the sources aren't nearly so ingrained in mainstream consciousness (Yma Sumac, anyone?). There's a big difference between sampling in a creative, transformative way and sampling merely to exploit the popularity of the source. "I'll Be Missing You" does exploit, yes. But most of the other tracks don't. I actually got the Puff Daddy album fairly recently. After reading lots of quick kissoffs like the above, I was expecting some sort of horrendously crass, gimmicky, one-note tripe a la MC Hammer. I was quite surprised. I heard a lot of soul there, and the production texture has a real sensuality to it. I can easily see why it's such a smash. Another selling point: Having all those guest stars adds a variety that's missing from most rap albums. And most importantly, hearing Puff reminisce sadly about the departed Notorious B.I.G. seemed a helluva lot more human and affecting to me than the usual my-dick-is-bigger perspective of most other rappers. THAT was quite refreshing. In the end, I'm not a real big rap fan and I'll probably dump the album one day. But I'm certainly not going to take any shots at Puff Daddy or his fans.
