However, The Yip Song is a real favourite of mine even though it is alll about a man lying in hospital dying of empha?, emfa?, lung trouble ! I'm beginning to see a pattern though because 'Stones Remain' and 'Yip' are both songs with drive and verve which 'feel' upbeat when you hear them regardless of the meaning of the lyrics. I really like these two. However, 'Wife' and 'Never Stop Bleeding' are slow solos. What I'm probably saying is I can enjoy a song about death as long as the metronome is swinging above 100 beats/minute and there's a backing band - crazy Englishman. After perusing Eddie's most excellent FAQ, I felt that it could use a few small glosses. Call it the Quail's Frequently Unasked Questions: >Q. I thought this was supposed to be a Robyn Hitchcock mailing list. >How come all you ever talk about is the Stones, the Kinks, and the Beach >Boys? >A. Let's face it: Robyn just isn't very interesting. Alternate Answer #1: I turn you to Woj's Axiom: "It is impossible to run a mailing list containing Susan Dodge and *not* talk about the Kinks." This is a problem known 'round the Net, and has proven to be especially annoying on all Mailing Lists which contain her as a member, including the Chapman Stick List, the Strangely Mauve-Colored Dryer Fuzzy Lintball List, and the S&M/B&D List. Although to be fair, it really causes more confusion than annoyance on the latter one. . . . >Q. What's up with this Eb guy? How come he's so grouchy? >A. Aw, Eb's ok. If you don't like something he says, just ignore it. >Anyway, you'll want to get on his good side, so he'll send you a bunch >of free promo shit. Hey! I never got any free promo shit! Oh, wait. Yes, I see now . . . . >Q. How come the Great Quail never posts anymore? >A. Oh, he's a big award-winning webmaster now. He doesn't really have >time for the little people these days. Alternate Answer #1: Because the Quail actually does *not* listen to the Stones, the Kinks, and the Beach Boys. . . . No, actually don't be fooled. The Quail really is an arrogant bastard, and it's better for the List that he has no time to post. God only knows it's all just shameless self-promotion anyway. Ah, hubris, Mr. Q, hubris: I trust you know the definition? And really! "Starship Troopers?" >Q. How come the fegs don't like GROOVY DECAY? >A. Because they're fucked up. Alternate Answer #1: Because they all listen to a very rare picture disc version of the demos of the outtakes called "Gropey Ducky," which all *real* Fegs know predated Groovy Decay, Groovy Decoy, and Gravy Deco by a good fifteen minutes. >Q. Is Bayard as cool in person as his mail suggests? >A. And then some. Alternate Answer #1: There is no Bayard. I repeat: Bayard is fictional. I know -- I visited his house, drank his beer, and met him in person. >Q. Is it true that Robyn is a Socialist? >A. You'd better believe it! Alternate Answer #1: With the (possible) exception of Margaret Thatcher and John Lydon, *all* the English are socialists. And capitalists. And monarchists. Hence it is a distortion for Eddie to say this -- remember that he is on the payroll of "Eat the State," so he cannot be trusted to disseminate clear information on the politics of artists. I recall an email where Mr. Tews once made the outrageous claim that Sporty Spice was actually an adherent of the Frankfurt School, and the Hanson Brothers all leaned towards Kropotkin. Next think you know he'll be contending that Billy Bragg is a socialist! >Q. How come that Eddie guy is such an asshole? >A. It's probably genetic. Is this really the place to work out your unresolved Freudian Father-complexes? But in all seriousness, Eddie is *not* an asshole. He is actually a very good guitarist, and it's really not his fault that David Lee Roth left. >Q. Why does everybody treat Susie D. so reverently when she only posts >once a month or something? >A. The thing is, she used to post roughly three times an hour. >Lengthy, eloquent, thoughtful posts. Majestic, even. Alternate Answer #1: The *real* reason we all treat Susan so reverently is actaully more simple: she's the only person who can rattle Eb's cage. Alternative Answer #2: We all harbor a deep suspicion that Susan is *really* spending her time on some really cool list filled with all night orgies, drugs, and kinks. And we hope -- with baited breath -- that if we treat her very nicely, we just may get the address of that List. . . . >Q. Oh, I'd love to go look some of those up! When will the archives >again be accessible? >A. Next question. Alternate Answer #1: Next question. >Q. What's woj's last name? >A. Presumably the same as his twin brother, Sven. Alternate Answer #1: It is actually Wojtila, and he is the love child of Karol Wojtila, our current Pope. This should explain a lot, particularly his reverence for Diamanda Galas. >Q. Did the Great Quail really make this whole thing up? >A. Yes, he runs it out of a dummy server in Intercourse, Pennsylvania. >Except for LJ. She's a real person. Alternate Answer #1: I think that this "response" is proof enough that Eddie is fictional as well, and that LJ really *is* the Great Quail. And oh yes, she really runs it all out of Blue Balls PA, *not* Intercourse as commonly believed. >Q. Should I purchase GLASS FLESH? >A. What? You haven't got it yet? For shame! Of course you should purchase Glass Flesh! How else can Mark acheive World Domination? >"That socialism cannot or may never be attained does not mitigate >capitalism's inherent inability to serve as the rational institutional >standard for a just society or peaceful world, or lessen the need for a >fundamental alternative embodying socialism's original objectives and >inspiration to resolve many of the world's enormous problems." > --Gabriel Kolko Alternate Answer #1: Ah, if wishes were horses . . . and really Eddie, without capitalism, we wouldn't even have Modernism or postmodernism, both of which seem to be favorite art forms around here. I mean what? We'd have fifteen hundred socially committed folkies prattling on about the beauty of tractors. (And it wouldn't even be at Farm Aid!) Alternate Answer #2: "That Bjork playing on every stereo cannot or may never be attained does not mitigate The Spice Girl's inherent inability to serve as the rational institutional standard for a just society or peaceful world, or lessen the need for a fundamental alternative embodying music's original objectives and inspiration to resolve many of the world's enormous problems. --Gabriel Quailko - ---------------------------------+-------------------------------- The Great Quail, K.S.C. | Literature Site - The Libyrinth: TheQuail@cthulhu.microserve.com | www.rpg.net/quail/libyrinth www.rpg.net/quail | Vampire Site - New York by Night: riverrun Discordian Society | www.rpg.net/quail/NYBN 73 De Chirico Street | Arkham, Orbis Tertius 2112-42 | ** What is FEGMANIA? ** "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents." -- H.P. I know you exist because every time I post talking about a DAT trade I get the obligatory analog beg for a copy of the show. I don't know if everyone understands how much more difficult it is to make an analog copy of a show. With a DAT copy I just have to hook my two decks together and press record. That's it. No setting levels. And most impostantly, no tape flip. I'm free to leave the house if I want. And making a good analog tape of a DAT show requires that you record the analog tape VERY loud, pushing the levels. Otherwise the softer parts of the recording will seem to consist of mostly hiss. But...if the analog trader doesn't mind getting his tape on VHS, it makes everything easy. No setting levels. No tape flip. And it's cheaper. I put 5 1/2 hours of Robyn's Largo gigs onto one VHS tape(in EP mode). The real reason I'm posting is not to offer to dub copies for everyone. What I want to do is make an offer to any analog trader who has 0 generation masters. These interest me. If you send me your 0 generation master of a live show you taped or a Music and Interview segment you got off the radio, I'll make you a copy of any show you want and return you master unharmed. Before you dismiss this as crazy, this is how single deck DAT traders have to work. They send there masters out all the time. Otherwise, there's no trade. When I had one deck, I did it. I never lost a tape. Peter ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Dec 1997 12:56:30 -0800 From: jeffery vaska Subject: Re: antwoman update > What?? During the 4 shows I saw this summer, Steve always ran around with a slightly manic, business-like demeanor. He always wore shorts and one of Robyn's "duck" t-shirts. Oh, and Nikes sneakers too. Did Robyn nix him for his lack of style? Did Steve say, "NO, Robyn, I'm NOT going to buy a crayon shirt and that's final!"? I never really spoke to the man personally, but when Robyn debuted "Viva Seatac" at the Backstage (I'm guessing that was the first time he played it, correct me if I'm wrong), I saw Steve standing backstage, directly behind Robyn, crouching a bit. When the audience cheered and whooped at the "computers, coffee and smack" song, he grinned with delight. But now he's gone. Ohh, yeah. Too bad. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 23:33:16 +0100 (MET) From: oskjefte@online.no Subject: EPIC SOUNDTRACKS As most of you will have heard, Epic died on November 6th, last year, in London. For those of you interested, and living in the London area, there is a tribute concert for him held at The Garage, Highbury Corner, London, on January 10th. His brother, Nikki Sudden, ( Swell Maps/Jacobites ) will be one of the artists performing. Hmmmm. dunno, but i believe the stuff which was recorded in seattle last june is of unknown disposition. the rumors were that it was solo material, but there was also word that it would find its way onto a minus 5 or tuatara-like side-project, rather than a solo record by any of the involved parties. in contrast, the jon brion stuff seems destined for robyn's next record. i imagine that is of more interest to him at the moment. woj n.p. roy harper -- unhinged ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 17:25:17 -0800 (PST) From: "Chris, the missing years." There would be some who would say this a place were chewing tobacco counts as credit in high school, a big truck is like a dowery for women and a symbol of worldly presence for men; a place where Garth Brooks is seen as a foreign diplomat, whom no expense would be spared; a land waiting to be reclaimed from an imperial and dictatorial federal government; and, finally, a place where you can protect your right to travel with multiple (more than nine) firearms obscuring your rear-view window. In this sense of the West, Seattle is no long "west". Mind you, that is not a bad thing. The final thing to remember is that these shows are, although on the West Coast, not in America; they are in L.A. Hope that smoothes the edges. ObJennifer Blair comment: I had not know she was the Antwoman; also, runs the homer part of e-contact. I have sent a couple E*s and gotten not response. It seems she is a) very busy b) not overly concerned with connecting with various electronic persons and c) is dealing with a lack of information and does not have much to say. The title of the track Dinosaur is a tongue in cheek dig at various sections of the music press that think that they should pack it in. Their best response to this, though, is a wonderful album I would describe as sounding like "Nightmare on Abbey Road, part 1". Vocals are, indeed, those of Mr Belew.
