Surely Carole King, Billy Joel, Aretha Franklin (if you count her as a piano-based artist, which I would since she played piano a lot on her 60s material), and others have sold many more records than Tori. I buy lots o' CDs, but usually they're not from the current year. In fact, I'm almost always a year or two behind. But this year I was more current than usual. Here's every '97 CD I own (31 in all): The Apples In Stereo -- Tone Soul Evolution Babybird -- The Greatest Hits Babybird -- Ugly Beautiful Built To Spill -- Perfect From Now On The Choir -- Let It Fly Danielson Family -- Tell Another Joke At The Ol' Choppin' Block John Fahey -- City Of Refuge Folk Implosion -- Dare To Be Surprised Guided By Voices -- Mag Earwhig! The High Llamas -- Hawaii James -- Whiplash Keaggy / King / Dente -- Invention Luxury -- The Latest & The Greatest Miss Red Flowers The Mommyheads Beth Orton -- Trailer Park Michael Penn -- Resigned Polara -- C'est La Vie Portastatic -- The Nature Of Sap Radiohead -- OK Computer The Residents -- Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses Sloan -- One Chord To Another Space Ghost's Musical Bar-B-Que Tobin Sprout -- moonflower plastic (welcome to my wigwam) Starflyer 59 -- Americana Stereolab -- Dots And Loops Superchunk -- Indoor Living Matthew Sweet -- Blue Sky On Mars that dog. -- retreat from the sun What's Up Matador Yo La Tengo -- I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One None of those albums stink, though some were disappointing (Matthew Sweet, Polara, James, the High Llamas). And I'm not a very decisive guy. But if I had to pick ten out...: 1. Radiohead -- OK Computer 2. that dog. -- retreat from the sun 3. Guided By Voices -- Mag Earwhig! 4. Stereolab -- Dots And Loops 5. Folk Implosion -- Dare To Be Surprised 6. Luxury -- The Latest & The Greatest 7. John Fahey -- City Of Refuge 8. Tobin Sprout -- moonflower plastic (welcome to my wigwam) 9. Danielson Family -- Tell Another Joke At The Ol' Choppin' Block 10. The Choir -- Let It Fly Have a happy! This is just a quick message to anyone I'm trading with: the computer I'm using for e-mail access (at my parents' house, where I tend to be only a couple of times a week anyway) has been out of action for the last three weeks or so (new version of Windows!). So I'm well out of date on just about everything. If you're still waiting for the 12 Bar tapes, and have sent me your address, I'll get them posted tomorrow. And someone asked me for Crablings 3 & 4; can whoever it was repost the message, as I think it's been eaten by Windows. Also, can someone fill me in on the Dorset gig? I caught a glimpse of it being mentioned as the digests were scrolling past at high speed. A month or so ago, my Netscape browser did naughty things and I had to trash the Preferences. Now it works fine again, except for one little thing I don't like. Before, if I wanted to look at the "Document Source" (ie, the HTML code for a given page), the browser would open a new window and show me the code. NOW if I do this, the source instead gets saved as a text file, which then triggers opening my SimpleText application (and there's not always enough free memory to do it). How can I change the Preferences back to the way they were, so that I can view the code within Netscape? Again, no need to post the answer. Speaking of offlist mail, I think it would be kinda pompous/showoffy if I posted every 1997 album which I like/own, but if anyone wants to email me for a copy of the list, I'll send ya one. I apologise for the length of this, BTW not so much top tens, as several "top several"s: Top 1997 releases: *Take in the Sun - ex-Straitjacket Fit Andrew Brough's new band Bike produces a sweet sweet sound. *Urban myths - Verve go where Oasis failed to. *Marchin' Already - so do Ocean Colour Scene. *Biological radio - Dreadzone. Bizarre dub with an influence of Yes, global ideas and Rutles samples. A quirky gem. *Do it yourself - from the ashes of the Stone Roses, the Seahorses produce the goods *Earthling - Bowie. In which an old chameleon releases his best album since the mid 18th century *Chinese Whispers - Greg Johnson. Slow and smooth - maybe a bit commercial, but this is probably the sexiest album released this year. Why has no-one outside New Zealand ever heard of him? Strangest 1997 musical delight: *Forest for the Trees - FFTT*. Traditional Indian and rap singing over bagpipes, sitar, didgeridu and mellotron is something I hadn't previously encountered, especially when the songs have titles like "The infinity cow". In some strange way it works well. Welcome back!: *Echo and the Bunnymen's Evergreen proves once and for all that the 90s were just a bad dream. Important musical discoveries for me, new or old: *PJ Harvey. *Beth Orton. *Sam Phillips. *Screaming Trees. *Throwing Muses. *Trashcan Sinatras*. *Supergrass. *Franz Schubert. Best non-new releases I got this year: *The Greatest Living Englishman - Martin Newell. No good just twiddling your thumbs waiting for XTC's next album... This fills the gap nicely *Hunkpapa - Throwing muses. Why have I never discovered this band previously? *Industrium Post Mortem: China - various artists. A postmodern weirdie. A traditional chinese air, played on erhu, is deconstructed and reconstructed by 20 remix experts. Sometimes strange, sometimes wonderful, always interesting. *To bring you my love - PJ Harvey. She wails, she screams, she imitates Patti Smith, and she produces the scariest, most rampantly sexual sound around. Girl Power? Feh! This is Woman Power! *Luxum - Luxum. Bluesy dirty Australian band. But plenty of fun. Very enjoyable. *Polara - Polara. Can't put my finger on why I like this one, but it ended up on the list anyway. *Hourly Daily - You am I. Another one with XTC influences. Not that that's a bad thing. *Toward the Within - Dead Can Dance. Makes Enya sound like a spice girl. *Martinis & Bikinis - Sam Phillips. Lovely Beatlesque (there's that word again!) album with a sense of humour. *Odelay - Beck. Damn catchy, Damn fine. Best non-album song of the year: *Farmer - Babybird. Biggest mystery of '97: *The spice girls vs Teletubbies for Christmas single. Proof that no-one ever underestimated the public's taste Guilty Secret of '97: *Becoming a "Blue Heelers" junkie. Oh the shame... Biggest nuisance of '97: *Jenny, Bill B, Bill E, Wyatt, Jim, and of course Winston (any New Zealanders on the list will understand this comment) Favorite movies of '97: *The Full Monty; *Fever Pitch; *Titanic*. All three movies are both effective and affective. Oscar-nominable performance in a movie: **The Titanic (both the real one and her stunt double) for the title role in 'Titanic' - the best acting by an inanimate object since Sylvester Stallone in 'Rocky'. Resolution count: *12 made 1/1/97. As at 31/12/98 four kept, four not kept, four debatable. Most spectacular success was to keep a diary all year. By the end of December it took up fractionally over 1 megabyte of disk space and amounted to over 165,000 words. *RIP and other goodbyes: Mother Theresa; Jacques Cousteau; Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; Stephane Grappelli; Simon Jeffes; Eva Rickard; Matiu Rata; Diana Mountbatten-Windsor & Dodi Al-Fayed; Jimmy Stewart; Gianni Versace; Deng Xiaoping; Michael Hutchence; Sir Tristram; William S Burroughs; Robert Mitchum; Georg Solti; William Crampton; John Denver; Billy Bremner; Pioneer 10. "Whatever is in the Heavens, and whatever is on the Earth, is Allah's. And to Allah the Merciful shall all things return." (Qu'ran, Sura 3, v. 105). First album I want to purchase in '98: *Star Rise Remixes, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Michael Brook. * = heard/seen within the last week. np - Jethro Tull, "Reasons for waiting" ;) James, wishing you all a happy remainder on 1998, and thanking you for reading thus far... ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V6 #115 *******************************
