Agaiun, I find myself agreeing with MRG: The basic units of 12 inches per foot, 12 pennies per shilling are useful as well. They divide nicely into 2, 3, 4, and 6. Ten only divides into 2 and 5. Since there were 20 shillings in a pound, you could easily divide a pound into 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 20, 24, 30, 40, 48, 60, 80, and 120. A decimal pound or a dollar divides equally and easily into 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, and 50. Nowhere near the flexibility. James (who competes regularly in a pub quiz.
