From your description of the RAW CUTS cd my RAW CUTS 12" is clearly an identical release, ie it includes the track Vyrna Knowl and Andy is not credited. No year is marked anywhere on the sleeve. However, I do remember buying the 12" new around 1989. Finally, the 12" has *no* discography and the catalog number is OVER 10. I agree the best thing is the Robyn pic. He looks about 17 ! I guess if you haven't heard "Sophia" or 'Thundering" the dichotomy I was attempting to show wouldn't be as obvious as I thought. Basically what I was trying to suggest was that though the latter two -are- more "novelty" numbers, there's a tenderness and a sweetness to them, a personal quality which I think is due to the happy romantic relationship influence, which isn't really present in something like "Gene Hackman". >and I'm embarassed to admit I don't know the others. Or are you all bigger fans of smooshy keyboards and electronic drums than I would have guessed? I haven't heard Fiona Apple, but every other thing I know that he's touched has become ruined for me. Compare Aimee Mann's solo albums with the last Til Tuesday record (_Everything's Different Now_). Or Sam Phillips' most recent cd (_Omnipop_) with _Martinis & Bikinis_ or any of her other albums. True, Brion didn't produce _Omnipop_ but his presence is the only new variable. What else? Oh, the Grays lp, which was not so bad but was, again, really overproduced. I think Robyn's riding high on a real songwriting wave right now--I'd really hate to see it ruined by a bad producer. Oh, I have to disagree. On Everything's Different Now you can hear guitars, for one thing. And real drums. Her solo albums, again IMHO, are unlistenable, and it's purely from the production. They're great songs when she plays them live (with the awful electronic drums and cheesy keyboards stripped from them). I guess what I'm saying is Brion seems to be a producer in the really "active" put lots of extra garbage on it mode--and that has never suited Robyn in the past (i.e., Groovy Decay). --"Jim" Francis ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Dec 1997 03:00:35 GMT From: dwdudic@erols.com (luther w dudich) Subject: luminous rose inspiration? =46ellow fegs: this is taken from the Richard Thompson list: Shakespeare certainly wouldn't agree with you concerning "rich," either! Since we're offering our opinions on Jon Brion, put me down in the pro-Brion camp, at least as far as the Aimee Mann albums go; I agree with Aaron about the Til Tuesday albums vs. Mann solo -- hate the production on the Til Tuesday stuff, like it on Whatever and I'm With Stupid (and by the way, I think he was in the last touring incarnation of TT, whatever that's worth.) Sorry to disagree Jim, but I like her current live versions of the TT stuff (on the rare occasions she plays them) better than the old studio albums. I haven't completely decided yet whether I'm a Brion "fan" or just mildly interested because of the AM productions, but either way, I'm cautiously optimistic about his work with Robyn. Because most everybody works better with a deadline, i'm going to set march 15 as the deadline. this should put it enough after christmas and enough before taxes. some of the contributions i'm excited about: - - an amazing "queen elvis" with congas, and vocals by the former Chris Hamburger! - - a spot-on "do the chisel" and super-experimental "america"! - - "the crawling" by long-lost Edward of Sim! - - "i'm only you" by john hedges of JH3 productions! - - "underwater moonlight" by seminal dc-turned-west coast band Insect Surfers! (one of my fav bands, and DAMNED nice guys!) also on tap: another selection by KEVIN Z. SLICK, whose bluegrass 'Brenda's Iron Sledge' caused a major sensation! - - an acoustic "superman"! - - tons of more new material from such worthies as Jon Kanis, Mark Gloster & Big Rubber Shark & Friends, etc, etc! Plus this CD will feature a cover by D. Teague, whose exceptional drawings graced the original Glass Flesh CD booklet! Let me know if you would like to contribute!
