I'm not sure I understand about "trolling" - is it behaving like some monster out of Lord of the Rings or is it good old fashioned self-agrandisement ? Or both ! There's no harm our comparing artists musical styles as that's what the list is all about and I thought you made a valid point about the sax. >I used to work across the road from Warren St. station many years ago and spent all sorts of hours at Sterns. A truly wonderful place.< So you worked opposite Warren St station ? That makes you a Capital Gold DJ and I put it to you Nick that you are in fact Tony Blackburn !! Over the years I've bought some good stuff from Sterns : Sam Mangwana, Zaiko Langa Langa, Master Mwana Congo, Kanda Bongo Man, and a dire disappointing studio album by Les Quatre Etoiles. I thought the drums sounded wonderful, although it was unfair to let the audience in while they were still soundchecking. Their album, "No Skin" on Transatlantic II is well worth the asking price.(it also features John Giblin on Bass, who made an appearance in the audience at the last stint of 12 Bar gigs in London). They have beguilingly eccentric but effective lyrics. The two girls have very powerful emotive voices (as well as being unfeasibly attractive). The overall effect was only marred at the Jazz Cafe, by the inconsiderate few who chatted throughout their set. It saddens me to hear that one member of this list was proud to count himself amongst them. Robyn once said that they were one of his favourite bands, having the added advantage of being alive! - --------------------------------------- FROST C.N fh523124@stmail.staffs.ac.uk ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 05:02:01 -0600 From: Dave Librik Subject: Re: "Trolling" and Warren Street Matthew Knights wrote: >Sorry, I'm not as sophisticated as some on the list and I missed the irony in >your post. I've managed to keep out of this dumb argument up until now, but... Come on!-- Can't you boys play nice? This is a GOOD place, a GOOD list with nice people who like and dislike all kinds of things. Let it go. Eb can be kind of cranky, sure, but his worst crime is having strong opinions. There's no need to be mean about it, or take personal jabs at him. It's ONLY rock & roll! And it's all in good fun until someone gets their eye(s) poked (or pecked) out. lj ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 14:00:00 -0000 From: "Matthew Knights" Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Who_the_hell_are_Coffee_&_Cream=3F=A0_?= lj lindhurst wrote >who the hell are Coffee & Cream? Coffee & Cream are two men on acoustic guitars. They supported Robyn at a 12 Bar gig in January '96 when Robyn introduced them confusingly as 'one half of The Love Trousers'. Hence, there's possibly a band out there called The Love Trousers with 4 men on acoustic guitars. Coffee & Cream were very good and certainly far better as a support act than 'Dear Janes'. Their style was quite laid back and not dissimilar to Robyn's or Homer's. I'd enjoy seeing them again. The man I recognised was also a minor TV celebrity over here (UK) a few years ago because he was the final presenter of the Rock show 'Old Grey Whistle Test' on BBC2. _________________________________________________________________ Matthew Knights mknights@harrywasp.prestel.co.uk `Ton ame est un lac d'amour dont mes desirs sont les cygnes...' _________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 14:24:12 -0800 From: Mike Runion Subject: A Robyn Christmas Message Someone asked if Robyn's ever done a Christmas song or talked about Christmas. I found this one... "I think with Christmas coming up, you have to think about your own personal safety more, and think like "Should I go gliding?" Because particularly you get strong winds and cross currents and if you're gliding down any big downtown metropolitan areas of any major American city, you're in danger of being caught in a sudden gust and smashing through one of those steel and glass edifices that pepper your terrain. We don't have that problem so much in Europe, we don't have so many high buildings, but we've got very deep gulches instead. A lot of people get swallowed up in gulches at Christmas and they're kept down there for any number of years. They might pop out three years later. And your sense of time is different when you're in a ravine. You don't realize you've been away and you come back to Betty and Pop and all the folks and you've got these gifts and you say "Here they are" and you've got a long white beard and hollow sunken eyes and you say "Hey Junior, here's your tricycle". And Junior's now...you know...kinda got barbed wire around his wrists and everything like that and his head on backwards and he lazers(?) you in the eye saying "Fuck off, Ancient One". And you don't realize you feel...you feel you've been dissed but it's cause you've been in the ravine outside of time. And I feel this problem only happens when we're gonna glide around Christmas. I mean, it'd be great to just glide through Christmas. Another bad thing about Christmas is you have to relate to your family. If you're from a typical white disfunctional family, the last thing you want to do is relate so you have to watch television instead. That's like sorta developing a smack habit to get away from alcohol." - Robyn introducing 1974 at The Met Cafe, Providence, RI 12/5/96 - -- Mike Runion Cocoa, FL, USA /******************************************************************\ | VCM: http://www5.palmnet.net/~mrrunion/cones.htm | | Fegmaps: http://www5.palmnet.net/~mrrunion/fegmaps | | Spoken Word Tape: http://www5.palmnet.net/~mrrunion/wordtape.htm | \******************************************************************/ "Wait a minute. (BT comes out only twice a year so there's usually quite a bit of lag time.) There's nothing particularly earth-shattering in it -- it's mostly a "let's catch up with our ol' buddy Robyn" type of affair, though he does mention that (1) the year or so that he spent in Washington DC was a creative low point for him (ouch!), and that (2) in "Storefront Hitchcock" there are practically no shots of the audience whatsoever -- "you can see the backs of two people's heads at one point" (though I'm not quoting verbatim since I don't have the issue in front of me). Nevertheless you should get this issue and/or subscribe to The Big Takeover anyway since it's such a great magazine (send e-mail to JRabid@aol.com and DON'T tell him I sent you). There was another, much longer Robyn interview a few issues back and there should also be plenty of copies of that left... - --John H. Eb EPIC SOUNDTRACKS FOUND DEAD IN LONDON ON SATURDAY English singer/songwriter Epic Soundtracks was found dead in his London apartment on Saturday (Nov. 22). While there are reports that he comitted suicide, a spokesperson at Bar/None Records, for which he recorded three albums, says that he simply "passed away." "His body was found on Saturday, but he was dead for some time," says the Bar/None spokesperson, who presumes Soundtracks was found by his landlord. However, another report says that Soundtracks overdosed on anti-depressants and was extremely depressed over the recent break-up with his girlfriend. The 37-year-old artist -- whose real name is Kevin Paul Godley -- lived alone and is survived by his parents, Trevor and Lois Godley, and his brother Nikki Sudden. Sudden was in a previous band with Epic called Swell Maps. An autospy will be conducted, and funeral plans are set for Dec. 1 at noon at the Leamington Spa Baptist Church in Leamington Spa, England. Soundtracks had been working on a new project for the Chicago-based indie label, Idiot Savant Records. A spokesperson at Idiot Savant says that Soundtracks already had some songs on tape for his next album, but the label was uncertain at press time if those tapes would be released. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997 23:30:50 -0500 (EST) From: Bayard Subject: spicy crablin's... ..hot out of the DAT! if you want a DAT of the latest rarities, send me your address and I'll put one in the mail to you asap.
