Worrying sign. Either through memory loss or hearing loss I remembered ‘The Rain’ as ‘My only friend Elaine’. At the age of 36 I’m clearly suffering from the first signs of groovy decay - I knew I should have stayed away from Burger King! Either way thankyou to the many people on the list who told me which Robyn song it came from. Yes Bayard, I heard ‘The Rain’ live at London's Hope&Anchor in April 81 or 82. I remember Matthew and Morris on stage but no Kimberley. When it comes to Ntshuks Bonga the way I see it like this. People fall into two camps, those who can happily listen to 'Trout Mask Replica' all the way through and those who run out the room screaming after 5 seconds. I agree Ntshuks (Robyn pronounced his name 'Dukes' or 'Choots') saxophone style is very errmm 'abstract'. It's just that I happen to get a big kick from that style of saxophone playing and you do not. He played *really* loud at Thursdays gig and I enjoyed it. Remember your comment about life's rich tapestry. You probably consider Ntshuks style cacophonous and I respect your view. Some people appreciate smoother more conventional sounds. That's why god invented James Last and Acker Bilk ! On Moss Elixir I guess Robyn sees both our points of view because he chose Ntshuks Bonga for some tracks and a different saxophone artist for others. Having seen both Les Quatre Etoiles live *and* Ntshuks Bonga live I consider they are both stunning artists. I'm a big soukous fan so thanks for the album recommendation. I'll give Sterns African Music a ring. (yes, i do mean literally. nice, cushiony envelope you picked out, lobstie.) 2. i mail the tape to a buffalo feg, and randi sled dogs it down to pick it up in person. 3. i mail the tape to lsdiamond, who then sends it on to randi, assuming such is possible when she's ready to do so. ...awaiting my instructions. if any of y'all haven't visited the house of figgy lately (and shame on you if you haven't,) jonesie's linked to a webnoize interview that is very good. woj didn't have it linked yet when i last checked, but probably does now. extra special thanks to cynthia, glen, and nick for convincing me to go see dan bern. sorry you couldn't make it jeff, it was delightful! i'm moderately certain that's the only show i've seen that featured songs about jesus, charles (kruatmeier) manson, napolean & columbus, marilyn monroe & henry miller, kurt cobain, and monica seles. he also said that, "everybody's waiting for the messiah...even ken griffey." there was some other good localizing too. probably the best was when he asked people to sing along to, "charles manson's real name is charles krautmeier," and when nobody did, he said that was *so* seattle, and bawled us out, then said he'd do it by himself. when people did start to sing along this time, he told them to shut up. my favorite line: "evolution's a pretty theory, but darwin didn't know that aliens came down and fucked a monkey." he didn't play in his underwear, or make any phone calls, but it was a wonderful show. i was raving about it to a friend, and he asked what kind of music it was. i thought a while and said that he was kind of a male version of ani difranco. was i just way off base? he even quoted woody guthrie. what more you want? i heard once that "tips" is an acronym meaning To Insure Premium Service, and they used to be administered in advance. i tell you, it would sure make it a lot easier deciding what kind of service to give if i got tipped in advance! i've bought quite a bit of stuff from them over the last three or four years. they're pretty reliable, i think, though i've never tried to sell them anything. i've never claimed to be anything other than a weenie, except maybe an asshole. he has dat copies of all the shows, yes? how long has he been taping all his shows? certainly we know all the Driving Aloud and PERSPEX tours are on tape. probably a lot of other stuff, too. (skip this next sentence, eb.) i once wrote mrs. wafflehead and told her i'd send along a couple thousand dollars for copies of a whole freakin' bunch of them, and didn't get a reply. anyhow, i think he certainly could put out some live albums if he wanted to. didn't you say there was no talking whatsoever, lj? i was really bummed reading that. uhhhh...yeahhhhh. gotta love all that nazi gold in swiss banks. c'mon nick, it's a fucking capitalist haven. amoral some would say. totally neutral. which is bullshit. I have all the easily available Blue Aeroplanes discs (there's some import stuff that's very hard to find). The Blue Aeroplanes are basically Gerard Langley and whoever's playing with him this week. Pat Fish (the Jazz Butcher) appears on a couple of Aeroplanes records, and I figure there must be a lot of Jazz Butcher fans here. Michael Stipe is on Swagger. Might be one of the Spacemen 3 gang in there somewhere, too. And I'm too lazy to check right now, but I suspect there's gotta be some producer who has worked with both RH and the BAs. Just a guess, though. Their amelodic sound can get monotonous, but it's interesting stuff. Spitting Out Miracles, Swagger and Beatsongs are my favorite Aeroplanes albums. I talked to Langley in a club once, and he told me that he thinks Spitting Out Miracles was the last album ever not to come out on CD. Ha. I've seen the group twice live, I think.
