What a revolting >thought. You don't have a grip on reality, Eb. Even though I hate to burst your utopian bubble, money is what makes the world go around. A fact of reality is that you pay money for the Robyn stuff that you buy because there is a market for it. Otherwise, it would all be free. People are willing to pay money. For example, look at the beanie-babies; they may seem worthless to many, but to others, they are willing to pay a lot for a certain kind of beanie-baby that isn't made anymore. Same goes for Disney memorobilia. Same goes for The Beatles. Elvis Presley. THE BEACH BOYS. And to get some of that hard-to-find stuff, you might end up having to go to the source. But hey, each person is different. Take it or leave it. Brett ************************************************************** Cooper Collections P.O. I exchanged the first copy because there was a little audio aberration 55 seconds into the first cut (Detective Song), where Gerard sings "what's going wrong" the second time. This new copy has the same flaw! Does anybody else have this problem? This is the Beggar's Banquet English release. They're going to get sick of me at HMV if I go through all 10 or so of their copies one at a time. - -- Ross Overbury Montreal, Quebec, Canada email: rosso@cn.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 15:35:15 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: Fan >Eb spouted: >>Is everyone as fully nauseated by this line of reasoning as me? >> >>One thing I can say: I have no doubt that the fanatical RH collectors here >>collect RH only because they love his music, NOT because they're hoping to >>parlay their collections into money or "connections." You are a pompous fool, and prove this more and more every (sporadic) time you crawl out from under your rock to post. Is there ANYONE here who supports Brett's loathesome "investment value" argument? >Otherwise, it would all be free. People are willing to pay >money. Brett's musical life seems to contain just two components: Alice Cooper is great, the Beach Boys are overrated. I wonder why he's on this list? Incidentally, Brett is upset because someone dared to mention Brian Wilson on the list a month ago. Hopefully, one of you will comfort him. I don't think the speculators should mind if I say that people who collect simply for $$$ are loathsome. They can laugh all the way to the bank. I knew a woman who owned a collector's record store that specialized in Beatles and who had a phenomenal collection in stock. The fact that she openly admitted that she hated the Beatles made me sick to pay her for a nice John Lennon portrait bubblegum card from 1964 that I couldn't do without. Every single thing that you could ever have a simple aesthetic interest in now has a price guide in the collectibles section in the bookstore. This is shallow and superficial thinking if you believe that the only real value in something comes from what it can be resold for. And it certainly has taken ALL the fun out of the collecting hobby. Even though I tend to disagree with Eb on his current rants (and his assessment of RobynH in general), I gotta side with him on this one. /hal ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Nov 1997 15:51:07 +1200 From: james.dignan@stonebow.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: meaningless respite from 'what is a fan?' In the middle of all this talk about planning Feg tours, Nick, Jason and a few others started talking DAT->MD. Now I know that Bayard will be waiting in the MD area for y'all, but I thought I'd better warn you. Denmark doesn't actually have an Antarctic Territory! hey guys and guyenas, what's all this 'define the words fan and feg' busines= s? What is a feg? It's a doorway leading into the night. A silent touch on a frozen window pane. It's a policeman working in an empty house... What is a fan? It's something that goes round and round spewing out nothing but hot air. In the last few days, this list seems to have had rather a lot of them. Come back the fegs - that's what I say. Let's get back to talking about the REAL things in life... Toast. British place names. Blinking. Cones. You know, the things that really matter. Oh, and in answer to your questions (some of them imaginary): 1) Cornwall uses a white cross on a black background. Rhode Island has a golden anchor surrounded by stars on a white background with a golden fringe. 2) Taniwha. It's a Maori sea-monster. 3) Down two, then left. 4) "Winchester Cathedral" was followed by "Finchley Central (on the Northern Line)" 5) It's the Nahuatl Indian word for testicles 6) V=E4tnaj=F6kull 7) Polish, I'd guess. 8) Aesculus hippocanastum. 9) Stockton to Darlington, 1825. 10) Elephant Island. It was Ernest Shackleton. 11) Bramall Lane, The Dell, and Carrow Road. 12) Claudia Schiffer, and a bath full of jello. It's the end of a looong week -- before I go join Julie and Russ for that much needed pint -- mind if I make some general observations?: Boy, I tell ya. That Eb fellow sure got a lot of people's knickers twisted. I'm still trying to decide if this is good thing or a bad thing. I haven't seen the list this animated in a long time. I just wish it were not quite so content-free. Full marks to everyone for keeping the arguments logical and the tone civil. Criticizing this list for being intolerant or narrow minded is like criticizing Switzerland for not keeping their streets clean. Sure nobody is perfect, but compared to any alternative they're exemplary. Remember, people on this list come from every background, every country, every age group, every political and religious persuasion. I'm amazed we find even two people who agree about anything. There will always be extroverts and introverts, people who are fanatical collectors and people who think such behavior is dumb. This is the world you live in guys. Wake up and smell the Java. The secret word is *respect*. Personally, I am not a collector. Hell, I don't even have all of Robyn's published works, let alone live tapes. But I would never put someone down just because they did. ...all part of life's rich tapestry etc. Next time Eb gets you all riled up with some caustic remark or other ask yourself this; Is this someone who seems to get a kick out of stating his opinions (assuming they *are* his opinions) in a knowingly provocative manner (- if not knowingly, then he's not as smart as I give him credit for) expecting/hoping to get a reaction? I'm not sure I agree with Jay that this is actually "rudeness" - but pretty darn close (let me think about it - I'm looking for that "r" word.) You have to decide - leave it alone and let everyone draw their own conclusions - or fire back, get into a pointless tit-for-tat exchange and risk coming off like *you* are Mr./Ms. obnoxious -- your choice. If this is indeed "trolling" it would explain why Eb is spending so much time on a mailing list for a "samey" B+ artist who's fans are stupid weenies - look at all the great reaction he's getting... On a more positive note, in my experience *most* people on the list *do* listen to a very wide variety of music. Most do *not* put Robyn on a pedestal. These are two things I like most about Fegmaniax. Of course there are always exceptions, and I love them dearly for it. If we can only apply the same rules of social etiquette to our writing as we do in face to face conversations, we'd all be a lot better off IMHO. ~N PS Oh yeah. I was totally appalled to read that RH is *still* playing with Ntshuks Bonga, the ^&*h*le who all but ruined the last album. I thought Robyn had learned his lesson about saxophones. What an awful grating sound - anyone who likes them must be a complete mental retard. (Oh - not getting provocative at all, am I? Sorry! ;) ) PPS Any soukous fans out there (and I now know for sure I'm not the only one!) should check out "Les Quatre Etoiles - Live in London" (French import on the B-Mas label) Awesome! ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V6 #75 ******************************
