From 1966-1969 (before Peter left) The Monkees played their instruments on stage. They did a fair amount of instrument-switching on some songs. (Peter played bass and keyboards, Davy played guitar, bass and drums) The Monkees would do solo acts, and had a backing band for this (except Peter). He tends to put horrible 80's-sounding electronic drumbeats on all the songs, and he tends to really bury the guitar in favor of keyboards and fluffy production. The difference between the last Til Tuesday album (pre-Brion) or the way Aimee usually plays her stuff live (where she's amazing, often just with acoustic in hand) and the new recordings is really striking. I'm horrified at the thought of Robyn working with him, though I can't imagine Robyn would let him change his sound as much as Mann did. All that said, I thought the Grays' cd was pretty good--a little overproduced again, but very catchy. Easy enough for a simian, I would have thought, especially since Mike N and Peter T could both play their instruments (did you know that Peter Thorkelson, that is, Tork, did session work for George Harrison on his "Wonderwall" album, playing banjo? Clarksville is 3 miles south of Milton on the road to Invercargill. The main road to Alexandra (SH8 via Waitahuna, Lawrence, and Roxburgh) joins SH1 there. It's a place you want to leave, not go to!
