"Balloon Man" from "Globe of Frogs". I think my favorite one has already been mentioned a few times, "exactly like a crocodile in search of a mirage across the undulating sand". The simile itself is wonderfully evocative, but the "exactly" is what really puts it over into the memorable category for me. Though it's not a simile or metaphor, but an example of superb rhyming skill, I always get a big kick out of the way Robyn rhymes stymied/blimey in "Do Policemen Sing?". ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Nov 97 09:42:40 -0800 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: simile mania On 11/2/97 8:25 PM, jeannine wrote: >"It rained like a slow divorce" ...for some inexplicable reason this one >knocks me out. > >Can someone remind me what song/cd it's from. I was sure that Trash was included on this collection, which would explain why you never noticed the lack of tracks from Invisible Hitchcock before! And although Trash is my favourite from Invisible Hitchcock, I still feel that it was a bit under-represented, especially considering the number of tracks from You And Oblivion (and considering that those tracks weren't Mr Rock-'n-roll and Surgery as they should have been)! And personally, I prefer chronological compilations, so you can see the development of the artist. However, in this case, it would have meant that the compilation would end with tracks from Eye and You & Oblivion, which I think would make it lose a fair bit of balance. Dave. I think I listened to that promo once; it really doesn't flow well, and seems to have been designed around the theme "here are just some of the goodies we're about to release" rather than an attempt at a cohesive and entertaining album. This just makes some of the more odd selections that much more maddening ("Nocturne (Demise)" rather then "IODOT"? "Crawling" over "RCE"?). Ah well, I suppose that given the task of creating a twenty-track compilation from the tracks on the Rhino reissues, everyone on the list would have a different answer. Y'know, there was a rumor promulgated on this list that Rhino had wanted one previously unreleased track to be put on UPT, but Robyn nixed this, thinking it was unfair to his fans to make them shell out that much money just for one new song. Is this true? Another rumor said that before Robyn intervened, Mossy Liquor was originally to be half Moss Elixir tracks, and half outtakes. Given that, and the completeness of the Rhino reissues, I think Robyn deserves great commendations for the treatment of his fans. The topic of the subjunctive came up and I'd like to add my "too sense" as it relates to Robyn: As previously mentioned, the subjunctive in English is used in conditional statements ("If I were a rich man..."). The verb form in the subjunctive present is always the infinitive, ie, "Whether I *be* here or there." The lyrics of "The Devil's Coachman" as they are printed on the record jacket of QE show the following line: "If he treat you horribly he's probably a Scorpio..." Do you see that? He actually wrote the lyric in the subjunctive!!! I can't recall if he sings it that way, though. I've often thought of making a grammatically correct list of songs which use poor grammar: "I Got Stung" by Elvis P. would be "I Have Been Stung" Likewise, "All Shook Up" would become "All Shaken Up" Bo Diddley should have sung, "Whom Do You Love?" AC/DC would have released an album called, "Who Made Whom?" The one that has always grated on my nerves is the line from "If I Fell" by the Beatles: "...I must be sure from the very start that you would love me more than her..." The other one from the Beatles that bothers me is from "Run For Your Life": "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man..." Unless this was intentional and John was trying subtly to tell us something ;-) Imagine that... Thanks for indulging me, kids...
