It sort of crept up on me without me noticing. My brain seems to have linked it with one, Robyn Hitchcock, but after a search through my, reasonably comprehensive, CD collection I found no evidence of, said song. I can therefore only summise that it must be one of the songs he played live at his last stint of twelve bar gigs. I've got a feeling it's a cover version. The only lyrics I can remember are: "Falling in love with you is the news of the day" Can anyone help identify it's origin. I seem to have got into Robyn's music a very round-about way. Most fans seem to graduated from the alternative/indie scene, whilst my first musical love affair was with the music of select artists from the progressive rock genre. (Gabriel-era Genesis, Pink Floyd,Van der Graaf Generator, Peter Hammill....) Of these I think Hammill maybe of great interest to Hitchcock fans, not because his music resembles Robyn's, but because his lyrics deal with many aspects of the human condition in a unique, intelligent way. His 40+ albums (both solo and as leader of VdGG) take in a vast range of styles, from the unnacompanied acoustic works(on piano or acoustic guitar) to a maelstrom of band activity. May I suggest, "The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage", as an excellent starting point for the newcomer. As for Robyn, who else could get away with using the word Weetabix in a poignant love song? - --------------------------------------- FROST C.N fh523124@stmail.staffs.ac.uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 13:18:36 +0000 (GMT) From: M R Godwin Subject: Re: Grammar rock On Fri, 31 Oct 1997, Stewart Russell wrote: > The subjunctive is completely unknown in spoken Scots, and Midge Ure* > is from Glasgow. If I was still living in London, I could confirm that it remains unknown there (at any rate among the locals). In the 60s, the word "were" was hardly used - quite often people would make statements like "You was looking the wrong way, that's why you was run over". On the other hand, the subjunctive is alive and well in that Russian village where they sing "If I were a rich man, da-da da-da da da da-da da-da da-da da da dee" It still loses something in the translation, though... - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 12:56:57 -0000 From: "Matthew Knights" Subject: What the Jazz Cafe is like Mike Scott wrote: > anyone know what the Jazz Cafe is like? > What tickets are likely to cost and will it sell out? The venue is quite impressive and holds about 200 people. It has two floors. The ground floor has a bar and is standing only. The stage is only about 2 feet high so you can get really close to the band. The top floor is seating and eating only. It doubles as a restaurant arranged like a balcony so that everyone can eat and see the artist. (See and eat the artist ? ). The food is good but a little expensive. There are serious looking bouncers on the door but they are quite stylishly dressed and laid back. There is also a big sign behind the stage saying "shut the fuck up during performances thank you". The Robyn tickets are 10.50 GBP = 17 USD and I doubt it will be sold out. You can turn up on the night and get in. I doubt there will be a support act. Most bands play two sets with a break in between. I've seen a few bands there including Mother Earth, Billy Cobham, Eddie Palmieri and James Taylor Quartet. I'm going there tomorrow to see another Robin - Robin Jones King Salsa. Subject: The Nightmare Yes, it's Halloween time again and my brain decided to grant me the following terror-filled vision last night: Setting: an television awards show not unlike the recent (unwatched!) VH1 '97 Fashion Awards. My wife and I are at home watching it on TV. A Whitney Houston/Anita Baker type strolls up to the podium to announce the nominees for "Best Sustained yet Underappreciated Artist" or something as vague. The two nominees are: Robyn Hitchcock...and Carnie Wilson. (I shit you not.) The audience goes silent as the silvery envelope is fumbled around and finally ripped open. You see Whitney-Anita's face go a bit cold as she leans into the podium and announces in a bland and disappointed voice..."Wilson Philips". The camera quickly pans down to the front row, where sits Robyn, Morris, and Andy to the left and the Wilson Philips gang next to them on the right. The girls jump up screaming and hugging and the boys stand up slowly. The horrible thing is that Kimberly Rew is standing on the girls side behind them. Apparently he has masterminded their music, their success, their glorious victory over his old bandmates. Carnie, in all her plumpness, steps close to Robyn and lift a pudgy finger to wipe away a tear from his reddened eye. My wife and I just sit there is horror. After the awards show an hour-long Robyn Hitchcock comedy/skit/burlesque thing comes on TV. I knew it was gonna be on, but I forgot to get the VCR ready. The show starts with a monologue but I think it is just a commercial for the show. I suddenly realize that the show is in full swing and I'm not getting it on tape! I fumble around, rapidly trying to fast forward the tape that's in the machine past "The Last Temptation Of Christ" and the fast forward is moving so so slow. Robyn and the gang are now doing a speedy run though a park with wacky music a la Benny Hill. I'm getting sick. I keep checking my watch. The show is already a quarter over and I still haven't gotten to a clean spot on the video tape. Then I woke up. Being a massive fan of Weetabix, I couldn't refrain. This also being my first post, I'll take the second to introduce myself. I am, like a few recently mentioned, one of thsoe who came intot the lull around the time MTV actually played the video to Madonna of the Wasps. My most recent chance was his last but one swing through Boston (my unhappy home of the moment). Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to see the Egypians. Which gets me to my point: I'm a bass player, and am now in the process of making the move over to fretless, which has inspired a newly re-ignighted passion for the playing of Andy Metcalf (sp?)... Can anyone tell me what he's up to these days? Also - I've heard some chatter about a number of demo and cover boots abounding about, would anyone be interested in making trades (I don't have any decent Robyn boots, but some brilliant XTC ones amongst some others). As I remember it, this is a well-known quote attributed to Reichsmarshal Hermann Goering, and is usually translated as "When I hear the word culture, I reach for my revolver". It seems very unlikely that a German would have referred to the Browning, which was an English machine gun from WW1 (I seem to remember that my Airfix SE5a biplane was fitted with twin Brownings). You love the security of a home and family and are fond of children. Although you have good business judgment, you are not too aggressive in your dealings because you do not like to create issues.
