I don't see the comparison to XTC, really. Matthews had some excellent arrangements on the Cardinal collaboration with Richard Davies, but his solo material is too often overwrought, and his lyrics are quite bad. His breathy vocal style seems like an imitation of Nick Drake, but I'd much rather listen to Nick. My doubts about him were not mollified by his swipes at feminism and homosexuality in a recent CMJ interview. I guess all this means I don't like him vey much. Perhaps I'm being overly harsh now since I once believed he had the talent to be a truly memorable artist. signing off, Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 14:10:19 -0500 (EST) From: Bayard Subject: Re: My Thoths on Quailizona in Jeopardy On Mon, 27 Oct 1997, The Great Quail wrote: > "This quirky English singer writes songs with this aquatic animal in > them." who is pat fish? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 11:36:18 PST From: "Eddie Tews" Subject: call for the orderly Update: paid a visit to the friendly microfiche reading room yesterday. the april 1988 show in philadelphia was indeed on monday the 4th, NOT the 11th, as most people have in their bootlists. it was at the chestnut cabaret, but i'll be damned if i could find a review. also, the A SOFT BOY NO MORE bootleg is from the 688 club (atlanta,) 11/22/85, except that it omits Bells of Rhymney. yeah. russ was asking about live song variations (last week sometime.) here are some i can think of, there must be dozens more. - --in Raymond Chandler, he often puts some kind of eerie story in the middle. - --he pretty much always fuses Flesh No. 1 and More Than This. - --in Balloon Man, it's, "he *lumbered* up toward me," rather than, "bounced on up toward me." - --in Chinese Bones, he usually fiddles around with the shakespeare part. this year, it was, "they opened Peter Sellers' heart, and they told him a story." - --in Queen of Eyes, he occasionally substitutes, "i wish i was live, i wish i was dead, she only wishes that you'd go to her head," for, "...she only wishes that you'd take her along." - --in I Got A Message, he usually has the part about, "you've been a wonderfully sincere audience, and i hope you don't get mutilated on the way home." also, instead of, "though i'm not a pice of veal, or a piece of ham, won't you get your teeth in me, just the way i am?" it's, "though i'm not a piece of veal, or a piece of beef, the way you get your teeth in me, is beyond belief." and, he inserts, "we both like bryan ferry," near the end. - --in Wax Doll he puts, "do you think that anybody, wants to be your friend, now that they know, now that they know?" in the middle. i think he pretty much always does this, except that he doesn't play that song very often. - --in Devil's Coachman, rather than, "blood red horns gouged through my scrambled," it's, "i could've strangled him, i'm english though, so i made him coffee, and i made him toast. thank you." - --in Queen Elvis, at least this year, he says, "lovely blowjobs from the press," where you're expecting, "oh, i'm jealous, can't you guess?" - --the first time he ever performed Cynthia Mask (thank you very much, ben!) during the part about the british capturing napolean, he said that they, "pickled his organs." i know this doesnt' really count, but it's damn funny! - --Clean Steve, of course, was the showstopping centerpiece of many an egyptians show. it's all messed up, usually. but he's generally got the part about, "a man with the ego the size of yours could hardly be expected to grasp that concept." - --in I Am Not Me, he substitutes, "don't turn your back," and, "what's your excuse?" for, "i'm not so sure." - --in Freeze, he usually *doesn't* do the Dig A Dog chant, although he has. - --he has, at least once, tacked the line, "dancing with my shadow," onto the end of Vegetation and Dimes. - --in Driving Aloud, it's, "no *shit*, no sweat at all," rather than, "no sweat, no sweat at all." - --in Only the Stones, he usually says, "girls were decked in flowers and *ovulated*," instead of, "violated." ...yes, there must be many, many more that i'm not thinking of. in other news, i was reading a book about bukharin that one of my leninist friends recommended (yikes! but don't nobody ever tell me that i don't expose myself to views that i find horrifying.) in it, the author quotes this line from a nazi poet: "when i hear the word culture i reach for my browning." i don't know nothin' about guns, but i assume that a "browning" is some sort of gun, maybe even a shotgun. probably just coincidence, but you never know. i guess i wouldn't *expect* robyn to be reading nazi poetry, but i wouldn't be shocked if he were, either. one last thing, then i'll fuck off. last night we were sitting around copying, folding, and stuffing Eat the State! some girl was talking about a stupid class a friend of her's was taking, about getting in touch with your senses, or something. one assignment was, you were supposed to walk around outside for an hour, and then report on which sense was your favorite. *something* like that. so everyone's kind of rattling of their favorite senses, but no one says, "hearing." so i chimed in, "well, if you couldn't hear, then you couldn't listen to robyn hitchcock. so it's really pretty cut and dried." everyone basically rolled their eyes and said, "oh god, he's starting with the robyn hitchcock again, get me the hell out of here." Fuck You! I won't do what you tell me! Fegs, I just traded for a video of Robyn playing Athens on Jan 2, 1993. The quality is pretty good. A single hand held camera from the audience. Encores include "The Ghost in You" and "More than This". The first song is cut off. The audience was a little talkative which is a little distracting at times. I've got a few other video items recently and was wondering if there would be any interest in a third installment of this sort of video compilation. The first two video compilation tapes seemed to be well received.
