Do *you* have a De Chirico Street in your town. as i recall the name came into his head as he was looking at some ominous street, perhaps in italy or spain? but of course this does not preclude the existence of a street with this name. indeed, there is a place in arizona in which almost every place name has the word "quail" in it. aside: TLR III, if you're still around please get in touch with me. =6 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 97 12:01:33 -0400 From: The Great Quail Subject: Mystery and Melancholy of a Street >Where is De Chirico street ? Giorgio De Chirico was an Italian artist who, in his younger days, painted very dark, suggestive, and increasingly surreal paintings; including many cityscenes - and very famous for his, well, um . . . streets, really. (1914's "Mystery and Melancholy of a Street"). His early style is similar to Dali, but bleaker, less busy, and more ominous. You can find some of his paintings online at: www.mcs.csuhayward.edu/~malek/Chirico.html This page also has more links to other nice surrealism resources. Wow! I posted again! (I have been very very very busy this last month, revising my James Joyce site and such. He was born in Volos, Greece, the son of an Italian engineer. In Turin and Florence and in Paris, where he settled in 1911, he painted _deserted_ _cityscapes_, such as Enigma of an Autumn Night (1910) and Mystery and Melancholy of a Street (1914). These early metaphysical works, through sharp contrasts of light and shadow and exaggerated perspective, evoke a haunting, ominous dream world. From 1924 to 1930 de Chirico gave enormous impetus to the surrealist movement and influenced such surrealists as Yves Tanguy and Salvador Dal=ED". There are several de Chirico paintings reproduced at the same site, including one which appears to include a Man with a Lightbulb Head! These= =20 paintings have obviously been an influence on Robyn. BTW, the Metropolitan Museum in New York has a room which contains several de Chirico paintings.=20 - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 12:19:50 -0500 (EST) From: David881@aol.com Subject: Human Music Live The one time I saw Robyn perform Human Music was at the Great American Music Hall show that Alex Chilton opened some four or five years ago. He introduced Human Music by saying, "This is the first serious song I ever wrote." Andy and Morris (not Tepper) were there, but I don't recall if they were harmonizing or not. Regardless, it was a pleasure to see and hear one of my favorite pieces of sound live. David Dunham P.S. I have every SB/RH album at least once (many twice re: Rhino/record/cd), and some other sordid things, but none of the juicy rarities/live stuff routinely circulated by some of the folks on this list. I do need them badly to make my life seem worthwhile; how can I be further enlightened/saved? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Oct 1997 14:54:37 -0500 From: nicastr@IDT.NET (Ben) Subject: Re: Human Music Live/rarities >P.S. The solo versions of "More Than This"(Roxy Music) and "The Ghost of You"(Psychedelic Furs) are trancendental! You can get "More Than This" on A&M's Gr8est Hits, and "The Ghost of You" was a super rare realease that is easily obtained on "Invisible History". Two of the great unreleased tracks are "Surfer Ghost" and "Shadow Cat". Let's hope they see an official release someday! ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V6 #48 ******************************
