When I interviewed Mr. Foetus, Jim Thirlwell, on the radio in 1992, I told the world that without him, there'd be no Trent or Al Jourgenson. He got a kick out of that, 'cause it's the truth. Anyone who can parody/ape the Monkees, John Cage, Xenakis, *and* Phillip Glass in the same song is alright with me. >I'd certainly rank these among the 10 best records I've gotten this year. >The wait was worth it! :) I must concur. I've been listening to Deaf for pretty near 12 years, and it gets better every time. Occasionally there is some somewhat intelligent discussion about those records, and Foetus, in rec.music.industrial (where Daniel Jones, who's mostly responsible for those reissues, can often be found), so go there for more chat about it. +++++++++++++++++ "Danger is my beer." + Gene Hopstetter, Jr. + -- Fred Lane +++++++++++++++++ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 08:33:01 -0700 From: mrrunion@tng.net (Runion, Michael R.) To give my eyes something on which to rest, I picked up the CD booklet and studied the cover art closely. Call me stupid, call me lackadaisical, but I never before noticed the title of the album hidden up there in all those clouds. I guess shrunken artwork is the price we pay for having digital music. Where is this song Human Music from? I don't believe I've ever heard it. Anyone out there have the Replacements' version of Sleeping Knights of Jesus on tape? I'd love to hear it. That's that... Trains, Cars She Used to Drive, Bass, Another Bubble, Unsettled, I'm Only You, Tropical Flesh, Winchester, Birdshead, Flesh No. 1, Chinese Bones, Balloon Man, Queen of Eyes, Globe of Frogs, I Got A Message ...it was a helluva good show. yuh, i know he was 35 then, and he's 44 now. but, eb's assertions to the contrarty notwithstanding, robyn can still rock like a motherfucker when he wants to. the way he lit into Freeze this year was a wonder to behold. and of course we've all still got the deuce ringing in our ears. yoiks, but i'd love to see him lug it around with andy & morris one more time (insert pictures of nostalgic tear dripping off my cheek, and wistful snot bubbling down my nose.) next topic: if anybody's got any back issues of Positive Vibrations they wanna sell me, please get in touch. i might even trade off my sealed copy of MOSSY LIQUOR. lastly, somebody sent me, about a year ago, a catalog that had in it the replacements' SHIT HIT THE FANS record, on which, of course, their cover of Sleeping Knights appears. they wanted thirty crackers for it, though. i came pretty close to buying it, but in the end decided not to. i guess that doesn't help you now, mike. but if you look around enough, you can probably find it. then send me a copy. Then again, how is that any different from any of their own songs? :^) btw: A new Replacements retrospective just showed up, it's a two CD collection called "All For Nothing/Nothing For All". While some of you have a 1.1% foetus/alcohol blood level, I thought I might bring up the following, like thinking about salted pork, eating a big rubber sandwich on a dinghy on a stormy sea: RE: Hitchcock: BQ: A couple of persons on this list have had some disagreements about the better version of "Beautiful Queen." I've been listening to both versions, the pitch-shifted violin version (Mossy Liquor/or live with Deni) really works and cuts right through, while the Moss Elyxir version is the best R&B-esque thing Robyn's ever tried. I was initially disappointed that the ME version was so produced, but over time it has really grabbed me in a very hypnotic way. If you've already cut it off, or programmed it out, or fed the tiny ones and zeros to your cat, I suggest you bring it back and give it one more try. This is from somebody who doesn't consume a great deal of R&B (too fatty, not enough garlic). - ----- RE: Gizmos,E-Bows,Sustainers: I truly think that the E-bow predated the Gizmo. Godley and Creme's album displaying its abilities came out in the late eighties. A friend of mine had an original E-bow since the mid-seventies (it still works!) I was going to be a Gizmo dealer with my brother. It seems that they had so many production delays, it never went into production. It seems the little wheels that bowed the strings would wear out quickly and also break guitar strings. They also were going to come out with a bass Gizmo, but I'm pretty sure that it never happened either, because of the worn-wheel thing. I own a Kramer sustainer, which operates on similar principles to those of the E-bow. It drives the strings with a pulsating electromagnetic polarity switching to keep strings driven. It works on all strings that are allowed to ring. It works well for e-bowlike effects, but I never did get my gizmo (waaaah). - ----- RE: Marks-n-sharkz-n-flesh: Thanks for the congrats and info. That CD got into the hands of WFMU by way of Woj, our own omnipotent king over all that is not made of high voltage static electricity. I noticed that the same DJ played _Glass Flesh!_ for the tastefully-endowed New Jerseyans(ites?). Last week she played the Rubber Ed(wood)it of "Balloon Man," starring our very own Jeff Lawrence, who may still be hiding away from our company in the the north of Europe. Also, "Severe Tire Damage" from my _Monday's Lunch_ CD was selected to be on Oasis Duplication's Alternative Sampler, going out to hundreds of rock and alternative stations. Your town may be taken-over soon by that Rubber Shark Buzz. I'm still waiting for the ultimate compliment, to be considered derivative of New Zealand bands, though. - ----- Fegmaniax been berry berry nice to me.
