As someone who was raised in Marin (ages 11-19), I can offer these statistics to thwart the stereotype: Mom: 52, trains beauty queens for Miss USA pageant, drives a Jaguar. Dad (well, stepfather technically): 78, semi-retired, owns a paving and grading company, drives an Oldsmobile. My folks still live in Marin, in Novato. Robyn content: Robyn has played at two Marin venues that I know of: George's in San Rafael, and the Sweetwater Cafe in Mill Valley. If you know of anymore Marin venues Robyn has played, let me know. I LOVE MARIN! If it wasn't for the high cost of housing and all the "richies" living there, I would consider moving there. I love being close to San Fran, but not in it. I love Sausalito and Tiburon (we lived in Tiburon for 2 years), I love Angel Island. I went to see "Dance Craze" and "The Decline of Western Civilization" (double feature) in Petaluma and we accidentally got stuck in Petaluma Cruise Night, stuck between all these pickups. I saw Wire Train at the Cotati Cabaret in Cotati once. Marin holds all this and more. Marin content: Favorite Marin mention in a song : "Moon Over Marin" by the Dead Kennedys. bye ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 14:48:05 +1300 (NZDT) From: james.dignan@stonebow.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: nervy I'm getting kinda nervous - that strange sort of feeling you get when someone's lurking in the shadows cause it hasn't happened yet... I saw Wire Train at > the Cotati Cabaret in Cotati once. Marin holds all this and more. > Actually, Petaluma, Cotati and yours truly are all in Sonoma County, north of Marin. A side note for all you film buffs -- Petaluma has served as a location for several films. Among them: * American Graffiti * Peggy Sue Got Married (also filmed in other parts of Sonoma Co., including Santa Rosa High School, my alma mater) * Inventing The Abbotts (also filmed in rural parts of the county] * Scream (Was originally supposed to be filmed at Santa Rosa High School and then somone on the school 'bored' objected to the violence and language in the script and Craven and Co. were denied permission to film at the school. Production moved to Petaluma, with some scenes being shot in Healdsburg, another So. Co. town) * Some movie with Ted Danson and MacCauley Culkin whose title I can't remember. "Dear Dad" or something. * Running On Empty (I think that's what it was called -- Rosanna "Don't Call Me Patricia" Arquette and Jean Claude Van Damn, I'm A Lousy Actor were the stars) * The scene in "Nine Months" in which Hugh Grant wrecks his Porsche was filmed on Hwy. 116 between Petaluma and Sonoma. Hitchcock content: Robyn's uncle Alfred used Santa Rosa as the setting for his film "Rear Window" and the town of Bodega (about 20 miles west of Santa Rosa) for "The Birds". > Marin content: Favorite Marin mention in a song : "Moon Over > Marin" by the Dead Kennedys. Other famous Marin references: Jack Kerouac mentions Marin in _Lonesome Traveller_, Johnny Cash recorded an album at San Quentin, parts of _Frampton Comes Alive_ were taken from shows at the Marin Civic Center, B.J. Honeycutt on _M*A*S*H_ was from Mill Valley. Also of note: George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch, LucasFilms and Industrial Light and Magic are in Marin. Two of the coolest record stores in the world can also be found in Marin County: Village Music in Mill Valley, and Bedrock Records in San Anselmo. If you hang around Marin long enough, you're sure to chalk up a few celebrity sightings, as well. I've seen Sammy Hagar, Phil Lesh, Robyn Williams, Harry Morgan and a few other famous folks around. Microbreweries are also plentiful and include San Rafael Brewing Co. in San Rafael, Faultline Brewery in Larkspur, and Moylan's in Novato. I agree with Lobstie: If Marin weren't so damned expensive, I would consider living there. Not until my pay improves dramatically, however. That's all for now. Sorry to have wasted your time with all of this, but I think it started out as Robyn-related. Another weekend almost gone, - --g My school colors were clear.
