(non-RH) Hey you King Crimson People, I'm ready. I'm hungry for some new stuff, and I think King Crimson is what I need, so if you're a raving fan of theirs, email me privately and give me your raves. Tell me why you love them, what your favorite album of them is. I'm no stranger to the ways of prog (I've been enjoying National Health, Happy Family, the Muffins, Curlew, Zappa/Mothers of Invention, etc. for quite a while) but I've never indulged in any the Crimson/Fripp/Belew stuff. Should I start with "Thrak", or "Lark's Tongue in Aspic"? Is the newer mathematical stuff better than the older, grandiose stuff? Do tell, do tell. Oh, OK, some Robyn content: I'm currently listening to the Rhino reissue of _Eye_ at work. It's a beautiful, crisp, cool day here in Linthicum, Maryland, and it just seemed like the thing to do. The weather is changing, and so is my weekly Robyn listening. Moving to the more acoustic stuff lately. October does that to me every time. Can't start October without at least two or three good listens of IODOT. __________________________________________________ Gene Hopstetter, Jr. +++ Internet Publishing Specialist E-DOC +++ http://www.edoc.com/ Voice: (410) 691-6265 +++ Fax: (410) 691-6235 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Oct 1997 16:59:45 +0100 (BST) From: M R Godwin Subject: Re: It just ain't anywhere.... No. The master tape remains locked in the EMI vaults, along with 'Scream thy last scream'. Both tracks have been bootlegged quite extensively, though. And the Floyd performed the song on BBC Radio 1's 'Top Gear' in October 1967 - this performance can also be found on bootleg albums. The last time this issue was raised, other list members stated that the other Floyds had refused to allow these tracks to be included in the 'Crazy Diamond' boxed set. Maybe Robyn Hitchcock should record 'Scream thy last scream'.... - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Oct 1997 10:37:26 -0600 From: hal brandt Subject: Re: the feelers are every...where? dee zed stroke zero one five wrote: > i can't find a copy of "the feelers is everywhere" (or > whatever the actual title of that song is). can anyone give me a quick > pointer to a particular show or radio appearance? thanks. > > woj It's "The Feelers WAS Everywhere" and you can find it on Robyn's 3/18/96 KCRW ("Brave New World") appearance. For the record, Robyn explains on the tape that the song title was an expression that he, Tim K., Michele, and Jennifer (A) came up with at around 4am while recovering from New Years Eve festivities. I've asked Robyn and A to explain more about the origin (since "feelers" keeps cropping up, i.e. 'Audrey Hepburn feelers') but neither could/would shed any more light. Jennifer did say: > I oh > so vaguely remember the feelers story, and don't remember at all when it > was, not a very good memory, I'm afraid. Lobsterman was kind enough to give my sister and I some previously-unheard RH tapes; one of them being that LA radio show performance he and Tim Keegan did not too long ago (you know, the one that was on RealAudio). Robyn sang "I Saw Nick Drake," a beautifully wistful, lilting kind of song. I loved it. But I had to confess that I didn't know who Nick Drake was, though the name sounded kind of familiar. So yesterday I went to the record store and picked up a copy of Richard and Linda Thompson's "Shoot Out the Lights," and inside of this cd is a Rykodisc insert advertising a Nick Drake "best of" collection called "Way to Blue". He lives! I thought. Then I read: Nick Drake tragically died in 1974. Way to Blue shows that we were robbed of a phenomenal talent. If Nick Drake means nothing to you, go buy this album. It could be the best musical discovery you make this year. Huh? Besides the eerie 1974 intimations, has anyone else listened to this fellow? Thanks. Of course, the songs are unceasingly miserable, which can be a bit much. And his vocals don't have much charisma. But more importantly, the fruity string-drenched arrangements sound terribly dated today. Actually,I've never been able to enjoy Scott Walker, for the same reason. "Da Da Da" by German band _Trio_ I have a couple of their albums from around '82-'83. It's really enjoyable, minimalistic stuff. Since that commercial came out I've been looking for some of their stuff on CD. I know it exists so maybe I'm not looking hard enough, or it's just out of print. Pointers welcome... But more importantly, the fruity > string-drenched arrangements sound terribly dated today. Although I don't find myself reaching for the Nick Drake CDs too often, I respect his talent. He's far from catchy pop and can be mesmerizingly miserable, which explains his lack of charma: He sings like he has lost hope. Vocally, it reminds me of Van Morrison's Veedon Fleece and the new Radiohead (both of which I highly recommend), but it lacks the musical backdrop of these albums. He has some interesting guitar tunings, and you'll be pleased to find Mr. Thompson's assistance on a few tracks. Of course, I'm partial to the lost soul types. Andy PS: Robyn came on the radio the other day singing, "It's been 25 years of XRT." Then they played "So you Think You're in Love." ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V6 #24 ******************************
