Trilobites are "rare" after the Devonian (say 360m years ago) and the first specimens shown are described as "Middle Cambrian" (which according to MacRae's diagram must be about 540m years ago). So even if you tack on an extra 100m years before that for trilobites lying about forgetting to get fossilised, that puts the earliest trilobite date at 640m years. Howdy y'all! I must agree that everytime I hear the Bass harmonics in "Winchester"...I get wonderful tingly feelings all over.... but enough personal stuff.... Metcalf is a sublime bass player! I'm one of those breed of fegs that when first introduced to R.Hitchcock's music, I thought the albums where weird and interesting...but I didn't go nuts over them, and I wouldn't have gone out and bought one!!! (I thought the treble tone on andy's bass on Egyptian's albums was particularly strange.) But two of my co-workers at the place I was working in '89-'90 played "Eye", "Queen Elvis" and "Black Snake Diamond Role" over and over and over again! (Bless them forever!) At the time, though, I thought "what is the deal with these two, why are they so fanatical about this guy?" One day I looked up from my dull pile of work and realized with shock: "These strange and beautiful squirming parasites of songs have invaded my head and have burrowed deep into my brain!!!" Well, eight years and 16 Hitchcock albums later, Robyn's parasitic songs have firmly established a nest in my cerebral cortex----I now chant the mantra: "Robyn's music is otherworldly delicious and most definitely the finest tasting music available at any price!! (PS even though I love Metcalf's bass playing, Jake Kyle on bass doesn't do a shabby job on Beautiful Queen--sheer pleasure!) By the way Capuchin....I also love the Meat Puppets...much different flavor than Hitchcock....but delicious none the less. They do have some moments of blistering waves of sound. "In Love" does it for me everytime. <~~~Buckeye~~~> ***************************************************************************** "...everythings all on...it's rosy...it's a beautiful day!"--Syd Barrett ***************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 97 08:43:00 -0800 From: Russ Reynolds Subject: Re: Ladies And Gentlemen...Andy Metcalfe!!! Wow! My first post to SMOE! Just thought I'd note that. A few miscellaneous dealyboppers: First off, to Capuchin: I remember distinctly chatting with someone at the Warfield who was looking for somewhere to stay. I really wish you'd identified yourself. Well, maybe you did and maybe everyone assumed I knew who you were and you knew who I was via some psychic brain connection, who knows? Second off: Very scary bulletins from Professor Fane there. I tremble as I write this. >I'm going to ignore the "Respect fiasco" comment for now Er, I'm not. I've actually never seen what it was that made everyone rave about this one so, but it's quite far from being a fiasco. Some lovely songwriting, even if the production is admittedly a bit busy for my taste. I really dig "Driving Aloud" in particular, as well as the much maligned "Wafflehead". To me the real mess is "Perspex". I think I've listened to that album maybe, 5 times, and it strikes me as fairly bland in comparison to "Respect", and as positively yawn-inducing next to my beloved "Eye" and "Underwater Moonlight". Which brings me nicely into the next part. > and just remark >that if anyone wants to hear what the Soft Boys sounded like without Andy, >listen to Underwater Moonlight. Yeah. They sounded pretty damn brilliant. But then they sounded really good on "Invisible Hits" too IMHO. It's just that to me "Underwater Moonlight" is a much more powerful creation. >Nothing against Andy, but I've always felt the best rock bassists were the >ones you didn't notice. Jaco Pastorias could kick both of their asses in a >bass-off but I wouldn't want him in my rock band. Well, this is one of those age-old debates: whether virtuoso players help or hinder in rock and roll. I think this is really a question of what you're aiming for and the band chemistry in general. It reminds me of what an old English teacher of mine said about Hamlet vs. Othello- put a character like Othello in Hamlet's place and you'd basically have no play. There's really no room for a virtuoso player in a band like the Kinks, on the other hand, there was room enough for two virtuosos in the Who. Imagine Keith Moon on the VGPS album- er no, bad news. But on Who Sell Out- excellent stuff. Umm, I don't think Russ was necessarily talking about virtuosos, but just players with distinctive, possibly distracting styles. In a similar vein to our Andy, I've always found Lou Reed's bassists rather distracting and a bit grating, and Reed favors a similar high-range, fretless sound to that used by Andy.... I wouldn't call Andy a "virtuouso," but I think he does fine anyway. Given the predictable jangle of the guitar sound, a bit of flair in the rhythm section does Hitchcock good. I agree . . . um, at least I think I agree. You see, after the Feglist went down, I merely created my own. Every hour or so I would pretend to be a different Feg and then post a letter to myself. I thereby created quite the thriving community by late August, complete with a wonderful flame war between Eb and Susan about the eroticism of overused tentacles, and a rather lively and spirited discussion as Eddie and Greg slagged it out over Leon Trotsky's role in world politics and bass playing history. Mark Gloster was in true form, reminding me that his next release, "Polypropylene Porpoise" was due in stores shortly, and that all the songs were dedicated to some guy named Allen, and were about small birds. He also spelled some words wrong, which thankfully I pointed out. Capuchin summarized all my efforts to date in a long, gleefully fuck-filled letter with was notable for containing the phrase "Crab Juice" several weeks *before* the Simpsons season premiere; and LJ confessed her undying love for me (a drunken confession! -- it was soooo sweet!) while Tom Clark threw a marvelous Feg party which, due to my occupancy of the Right Coast, I was regrettably unable to attend. Mike did FAX me some imaginary pictures, though, which were all very lovely. As a matter of fact, everything was going just peachy until I had Ken Sabatini flame me by posing as me posing as him posing posing as me, thereby very wittily showing me just how inane and self-aggrandizing my whole imaginary Feglist excercise was. Just as Eddie and Natalie were coming to my defense, the so-called real list started up again. So . . . I will gladly mail again to the "real" fegs, although I feel somewhat sad about disbanding my other list. . . . - --The Great Quail PS: Oh yes: Ignore all postings from the other "Great Quail," the poseur who is sending those spurious "Doom" letters.
