As some of you know, I've been moving house over the last month, which was cunningly timed to coincide with the absence of the list (in a parallel universe I'll be reading digests up until Christmas). I've now found a place in Wimbledon (Mike please move my dot on the fegmap!), and I'll be getting those tapes I promised done ASAP. > > > Robyn (whose first novel will be published later this year) > > > > Is this new news or I have I just been out of the loop too long? He didn't reveal > any details about the story, or about the title. He said he knows > how it ends, he just needs to find time to write. He told us > that we should relay this information to the list. In fact, when I asked him what it was about, he told us that he didn't want to spoil the surprise, but he could confirm that it was good and would sort out our Christmas presents for the next five years!! "The Cambridge Ball", as it was called, was a bit odd - not many (enough) people, it wasn't black tie (as these things in Oxford/Cambridge usually are), and a strange setup for the music (the large inside of the venue was used for dance music, while the marquee outside housed dire indie bands for the first part of the evening until the folk / acoustic musicians took over, and everybody who'd been watching the indie stuff went inside for the dance). There were only a handful of us watching Robyn inside the marquee, and a small crowd milling around outside. When we talked to Robyn later, he said that a friend of his had organised the event, so he was doing it as a favour and was expecting the small audience. The three of us (myself, Susan, and a non-feg friend of mine, Ian, who was soon bitten by the Robyn bug) were talking with him for quite a while, about the book, the new album, the new songs (Viva Sea-Tac is going to be the next single), the Isle Of Wight trip, and musicians' underwear (when I said that Ian used to play keyboards in my band, he said to Ian, "you must have clean underwear then". When Ian asked why, he explained that keyboard players always have clean underwear, guitarists tend to have slightly soiled underwear [usually strawberry jam stains], and drummers just have sweaty headbands!) As for the gig itself, the sound wasn't brilliant (as Susan said, the sound of bass beats leaked out from the dance area inside), but Robyn played well, and the lack of banter/stories was more than made up for after the gig. All in all a damn good evening! Then the argument erupted...IS A MOOSE RELATED TO A COW?....who to ask...the zoo since it was 11 at night in Houston that meant that all the Zoos in our hemisphere were closed. So we called Honolulu...closed...Manilla...couldn't understand them...a series of Hong Kong directory assistance operators at MCI...Wellington Zoo with a long phone tree....you dont have to take a car...take the train.. and finally the Sydney Zoo who after thinking we were the biggest goofs on the planet told us yes they were related and then talked about the weather and pubs.... ...so anyone in Sydney buy your zookeepers a beer for me Cheers Jay - ------------------------------------- Jay Lyall Channel Sales Director Livermore Software Laboratories, Intl. 2825 Wilcrest, Suite 160 Houston, Texas 77042-3358 1-713-974-3274 jay@lsli.com Date: 9/18/97 The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind. --Humphrey Bogart - ------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Sep 1997 15:46:12 +0100 From: "Tony Blackman" Subject: Welcome back Fegmaniax, (and a totally selfish request) Welcome back everybody, and can I just say it's bang on time as I've become very tired of the mass hysteria and national psychosis in this country of late (but then again I never toe the line). To be utterly selfish, I know there's quite of few of you out there in or around Washington (D.C.) so, if any of you are listening, I'll be out there next Friday for 5 days or so so I was looking for a list of secondhand-hand CD shops worth visiting. I remember Vinyl Experience (is that right?) in Fairfax being mentioned before (in fact I got hold of a copy of "The Hooded One" or whatever it was called....the yellow bootleg album that was mentioned on this list) through a friend that lives nearby, but are there any more within a 50 mile radius worth a visit? Thanks to Mike Godwin for the IOW review and photo, it kept me going while the list was down! Anybody else from the U.K. going to the Jazz Cafe gig? When I sorted out tickets a couple of weeks ago when I walked past the venue, they still had a number of tables left. The tables are upstairs and have superb view of the stage, but you need to spend a minimum of 12.50GBP on food/booze. Oh yeah, don't ask for the best table on the right, as I've got that. Anyone know anything about the venues for the other U.K. dates? I must admit that outside Cambridge, I've never been to them. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help. Tony. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Sep 1997 14:48:57 -0700 From: mrrunion@tng.net (Runion, Michael R.) Subject: El Mocambo Question! Hey all, It's so damn easy to type e-c-t-o...
