And a small but vocal collective sighed. Hey! In the wake of our lost list, a mini-Feg gathering took place in Chicago last week. Yes, I'm still alive, so I made it. Without me, in fact, it would have just been Nick and Susan charming the pants off of each other (figuratively, of course). Lucky for me, I got to have my pants charmed off as well (I would say litterally, but then you'd all pass on seeing the spiffy pictures we took). YES! We did document this tiny gathering, like all GOOD Fegs do! In fact, when the photo booth at the first meeting place was found to be out of order, we jumped a cab in search of a bar that had a photo booth that did work. Thanks to the gentle prodding of Senor Nick, we made our way into the booth before the owners kicked us out (litterally)! We had a gas, and it was great to meet at least one member of that budding Bay Area Feg movement that seems to meet up every, what, two or three days? Poor Chicago Fegs- beaten by the Golden Gate. Susan? Shall we move? More on this (if you want it) from my partners. I've got to go to bed. Thanks Nick and Susan for a super groovy evening! Blinking On And Off, Jay P.S. OK, here's a bit more detail: At Brockenhurst, it was a beautiful hot day and the New Forest ponies were hiding in the shade, swishing their tails to keep the flies off. Arriving by train in Lymington, I walked past the so-called 'Harbourmaster's Pier' four times, studying the map closely each time, before I convinced myself that this small gangplank and platform must indeed be it. I saw a bloke in a 'Mrs Wafflehead' T-shirt looking equally lost and never saw him again for the rest of the day... Eventually a recognisable group of fegs began to cluster in a bunch, then Robyn and Michelle got out of a car and everyone started to look for the boat. When the 'Island Rose' (?) finally appeared, Robyn said 'Is that it? We'll never get 60 people on there" I said (would-be wittily) "No trouble, 30 on the top deck and 30 on the bottom". He looked at me completely seriously and said "Is it your boat, then?". "No" I replied, abashed. I didn't speak to him again until the end of the trip. However, there turned out to be plenty of room for the 82 people who turned up - which unfortunately didn't include Tim Keegan (as Gary mentioned). Robyn was looking for his mother: "Have you seen a little white-haired geezer, with a smile and nice eyes?" he was asking. The boat set sail at about 1720 hours, heading for Yarmouth Pier. I went up to the top deck, and Robyn and Jake played on the bottom deck. During "I dream of antwoman" Robyn got everyone singing along on a chorus of 'being just contaminates the void'; I hadn't previously realised that this was a singalong number. Then they played 'Oceanside' and 'Alright Yeah' arriving at Yarmouth during the final bars. We were deafened as we got off the boat by a rock band at the Yacht Club belting out 'Johnny B Goode'. Then we trudged up to the old railway station in the evening sunlight, avoiding eye-contact with the natives as instructed by Robyn. The locals teemed through the great boulevards of Yarmouth, carousing and celebrating carnival day. Robyn played an excellent set at the station: Gene Hackman Cheese Alarm (then with Jake) De Chirico Street Devil's Radio Queen of Eyes Jewels for Sophia Heliotrope There were a couple of mildly surreal interruptions when the Sea Scout troop came marching through, and when a large family accompanied by three border collies came to inspect the proceedings. Robyn was devastated to see a burglar alarm installed on the scout hut: "A burglar alarm in the West Wight!" Back to the boat, aiming to get on board in time to see the sunset. The carnival crowd was by now crazed on rum truffles and candy floss, and many a nervous feg picked up his / her feet anxiously, keen to escape from the increasingly ugly murmurings of the canaille. On the long return trip via the Needles, I sat downstairs and Robyn and Jake played upstairs. I can't give a complete setlist as I was in the bar for some of the time, but it included 'Beautiful Queen', 'Feels like 1974' 'Viva Sea-tac' 'All Shook Up' 'Mystery Train' (complete with Robbie Robertson interlude bits) 'Bass' and 'Clean Steve'. There was an interesting interlude when Robyn spotted a suspiciously calm patch of water, and saw a nameless tentacled denizen of the deep pulling down a swimmer who (despite coming up gasping for breath) was ultimately dragged to a watery grave. I didn't see this myself, but Robyn was pretty definite about it. At the end people were thanking Robyn for the trip, so I showed him a newspaper article on killer whales playing frisbee with stingrays. "The human race has got a lot to answer for" he replied, convinced that the whales had got the idea off TV (I told you this already). Tired but happy, I got back into Lymington, in plenty of time to miss the last train back to Bath. I had to get a cab from Westbury, which cost twenty quid - but it was worth it! - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 09:47:56 -0700 From: mrrunion@tng.net (Runion, Michael R.) (what's a smoe?) just wanted to check in... i have been travelling by plane and train and automobile meeting fegs. and I have to agree with Glen, they definitely make the best h... er, that is, thay are just the nicest folks around. Thanks Cynthia and Mark for letting me sleep on your floors. Please thank your cats for keeping me entertained, hope they didn't mind playing with a lower life form. The feg-fun began when Cynthia, Daniel and I met up with a whole bunch of list fegs waiting to get into Bumbershoot. I recognized Lobstie (about 6' 3" from his head to his tail). Someone, I think Eddie, encouraged us to join them in line. "Hey, we're fegs," he said nonchalantly. Soon we were loping briskly into the plush opera house. The RH set was too short... we agreed he/they must have been denied an encore due to time limitations. I like solo RH but wish the boys had joined him for more than three songs. I mean, they were available, for goshsakes. As others have said, it was sort of an RH showcase for the uninitiated.. RH alluded to this after the first or second song. The set, including the seatac boys, was an hour. RH didn't even bother to introduce Scott, Peter, and Kurt (Kurt, right?). "you know these guys, right?" For me, the best part was when the sea-tac boys came out. John Lobsterman and I grinned when this happened. The saddest part was when the curtain slammed down and "we'll leave you with this" actually came true-- i thought he only said this before encores? but no, I think he did this at the secret gig too. Which brings me to the next day. (Not to slight the wonderful party given by Cynthia, at which I got to watch one of my favorite RH vids, and talk to Karen, Carol, Daniel, Chris, and listen to Jeme and his friend (both outrageously entertaining. email me to find out what Jeme's friend said. as some will recall, I could hardly believe he came up with it on the spot).) We were enjoying Seattle and wondering if we should go to Bumbershoot again. We'd had tons of Bumbershoot fun the day before and were also wondering if there would be another small gig with the sea-tac boys. Robyn had promised a Sea-Tac 2.5 but the Croc was closed (we walked by and I nearly jumped the chair propping the door open to accost the janitor and find out the real deal.) Cynthia had heard someone mutter something about the Two Bells Tavern so we went there and were told "No. We don't have musicians. We have *artists*." We ended up eating and drinking there anyway. As we were settling the bill and about to leave, Robyn walked in, wearing [of all things] a www.firefly.com t-shirt. A t-shirt. with an internet site on it. is that weird or what? Cynthia asked him if he'd be playing anywhere that night, and explained we'd been waiting for him. He replied "Yes, I'm playing here, only they don't know it yet." He seemed a bit surprised that we'd known where to find him. We really do know what he's going to do before he does it. He told us who would be coming along to play with him, but spoke quietly and Jeme and I thought he said "Barrett". {Later that evening a woman handed RH a videotape that had "Opel" written on it, but I think it was footage of a new band, not long-lost Barrett stock.} I didn't catch much more of what he said... he quickly excused himself and said he'd be back at ten. Around eleven the place began to fill up with friends of RH and the Sea-Tac boys, then RH and the boys arrived. RH started out solo, playing his acoustic without amplification. He dubbed the gig the princess Di memorial gig, and said he was British too, but would shortly be joined by a couple of real americans. "This is an English song," he said, and launched into "I Something You". Aside from "Gene Hackman", the rest of the selections were off the beaten track and similar to those from Robyn at Sea... All Shook Up, Cheese Alarm (not to be confused with direct me to the cheese), etc. Sort of the opposite from the Bumbershoot greatest hits showcase. There was one song that seemed to be either a Dylan song he and Scott couldn't remember, or something they were working on and hadn't finished. RH seemed happy and comfortable. He/they played a little under 40 minutes. It was great. We didn't talk to RH afterwards.. he seemed occupied with this and that... but I did feel he was looking at us funny. Perhaps wondering, "Who are these fiends? And how do they always know where to find me?" Then a few days later I got to meet Tom and Mark and Glen and their significant others, all awesome people. Great to have the list back online! =b ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 00:14:41 -0700 From: Nick Winkworth Subject: Re: Happy Birthday A Tutu Brute? wrote: > This is a joint birthday celebration, isn't it Nick?
