Costello has written quite credibly (often brilliantly) in the fields of rock, pop, punk, classical, country, folk, blues, film scoring, reggae and "lounge," without ever resorting to superficial parodies a la "Sleeping Knights of Jesus." Except for maybe Frank Zappa, Costello is the most versatile songwriter I've ever heard. And of course, Zappa was also prone to superficial parodies. As previously stated, you'll get no argument from me about Ray Davies. I do deeply adore the 1964-1973 Kinks, but after that, Ray lost me. In my eyes, he ran out of inspiration following "Celluloid Heroes" and "Sitting in my Hotel." Those always stand out in my mind as the last two classic Kinks songs. The rest of the enclosing album was a mess. I bought several post-Muswell Kinks records, but ended up trading them all back. >Why does a song have to be topical for it to be important? It doesn't! All I said was that I wished Robyn would mix it up more, whether it's through arrangements, lyrics, rhythm or melody. More topicality was one possible route I suggested. And no, topicality doesn't necessarily mean Billy Bragg-style preaching! Glen wrote: >As for "Murphy Brown", I don't think it's funny now, let alone twenty >years down the road. Ha ha, you bet. Primary research will be conducted at the Hotel Utah (corner of Bryant and Fourth at 500 4th Street, San Francisco) this Saturday, Aug 9th. Instrument calibration and dry runs will be performed with the assistance of The Anton Barbeau Drag Team 3 starting at 10:00. Formal Loud Family testing will begin at 11:30pm. There will probably be a pre-meeting meeting to eat dinner, compare notebooks and sharpen our pencils. It should be noted that none of the core team (this author, Mark "rubbershark" Gloster, Sidney "not a Hedblade" Coatsworth, Tom "for Apple president rah rah" Clark) has ever heard Loud Family's music before, let alone seen them. So we believe our report will be meaningful and unbiased [yeah, right. Ed]. We would like to nominate Mike "mean deviation" Godwin as honorary group statistician - even though the Bristol ferry won't get here till September 1999 - but that still leaves many open slots on the team. If you're in the area and would like to join us, drop me an email and I'll let you know where we're meeting and how to recognize us. Please bring an HB pencil, a calculator and $6 for the cover charge. ~Nick BALFFEP Project Manager Extrordinaire and Chief Beverage Consumption Officer PS I guess I should leave the nickname assignment to Mr. Uber... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 18:38:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Bayard Subject: Re: "Hang the judges high" Trudi (not the old paper fegmaniax list Trudi?) wrote: > >I totally disagree! It's terrific! Very unexpected, but delightful. It would be fun to make an evangelizing set with this, the Nov. 6 1996 Vancouver show with Deni Bonet, and a compilation tape in between, arranged in chronological order. Call it This is Then, That Was Now. Put a quotation: "I don't know why, but I think I'm going to try / to fade back into yesterday, before tomorrow comes". Portland Arms sounded like it was on a record (snap crackle pop). Is there anywhere you can get the record from? And are there any other Soft Boys recordings this good -- Daniel Saunders Have a day. :-| ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 16:46:17 -0700 From: markg@ipg.3com.com (Mark Gloster) Subject: Re: Bay Area Loud Family Feg Evaluation Project (BALFFEP) markg@ipg.3com.com A few thoughts on this. I don't know anything about The Anton Barbeau Drag Team 3 or really The Loud Family, other than what I heard on our list that just happens to be about Robyn Hitchcock. But any excuse to get together with some of my favorite chums (and Mark Gloster And Big Rubber Shark fans) is a great excuse to do so. While Nick "BALFFEP Project Manager Estrordinaire" Winkworth will be our Chief Beverage Consumption Officer, taking every precaution that our beverage consumption experience is most satisfactory, will be offering free beverage testing services to the attendees. Tom "Future Apple CEO" Clark, because of his future title, will be presiding over our marketing, sales, and investor relations departments. It is hopeful that he will be able to attract fresh, but soiled money from his new close friend Mr. Gates. Sydney "Neither Headblade nor a Fishblade" Coatsworth will be returning to us in her position of Geolographic Environmental (and we do mean mental) Chief Scientist and Keeper of the Sacred Giggles. Should anybody attempt to use humor upon our elite group that does not contain references to "boogers" or "beer," it will be part of her job to 'splain it to those in the clique who are sophisticationally challenged- and yes, I know who I am. Mark "rubrshrk" Gloster will be providing that special brand of "entertainment" that can only be found in a Mississippi sideshow or from a jester employed by a vogon king. He will also be in charge of doing modern "performance art" "presentations" at the dinner table using napkins, eating utensils and incredibly poor ventriloquism. BARF, Bay Area Regurgitating Fegs is the post concert recovery organization for those who found that they agreed with the consensus of the posting fegmaniax, partooked in too muchage beverish, Nick's beverage tasting service didn't perform adequately, or could not survive the "entertainment onslaught" of Mark "rubrshrk" Gloster, the Bay Area Feg with no official title. Recovery just takes twelve steps, but with good behavio(u)r we think we can get it reduced to six. Well. I hope I haven't discouraged anybody from joining us. Actually, the rest of the gang is quite fun to be around. More fun perhaps than a barrel full of Ebs if the barrel was packed really tight. Gee, I think I'm fun to be around too, but it's a simple matter of perspective and brain size. I hope we can see even more of ya, -Mark Gloster ps. Thanks Sydney for thinking this up. pps. Thanks Nick for being the izer of organs. ppps. Thanks Tom for zymurgy and other cool words. pppps. Wish Russ and Glen, our other faithfulbayareafegs could join us, but at least they'll give us something to talk about. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The End of this Fegmaniax Digest. *sob* .
