Often lazy hostile individuals who believe >someone somewhere owes them something. the wage system is exploitation. that's it. that's why it used to be called "wage slavery," back when one could actually carry on political discourse in this country. that's important, but more to the point is the fact that in most poor families (over 70%) the parents work full time. welfare to the poor --which is being slashed-- runs about $14 billion a year. welfare to the rich (subsidies, tax breaks, price supports, ex-im guarantees, giveaways, the police/legal system, military keynesianism, imperialism in general, NAFTA/GATT free trade bullshit, bailouts, regulation etc.) runs about $700 billion a year. professor ralph estes, in a recent study, conservatively estimated that private corporations cost the public about $3 trillion dollars a year. >I hear people talk about people going hungry in the US, but when was >that last time you saw photos of American children with bloated bellies >and flies crawling all over their faces. tuberculosis has returned to new york city. >We see it some other countries, but this has nothing to do with >socialism, capitalism, or a free market, it is from lack of democracy >and free elections. it has everything to do with capitalism. it is caused by subsidized u.s. agribusiness firms dumping products in third world countries, driving indigenous farmers out of business, (and into maquiladoras) overfarming the land with cash crops, causing desertification. it has to do with the fact that the world bank and imf have saddled 70% of the world's population with horrifying austerity programs so they can service their debts (created when we gave money to dictators, which went straight into their pockets --or, more accurately, the cayman islands-- and then unilaterally jacked up interest rates when volcker came into power.) it has to do with the fact that whenever somebody tries to extricate themselves from the global economy, we annihilate them, and then slap an embargo on them (500,000 iraqi children have died SINCE the war as a result of the sanctions. see also vietnam, cuba, grenada, nicaragua, the list goes on.) we subvert democratic free elections every chance we get. here are the ones i can think of off the top of my head: chile, bolivia, haiti, nicaragua, greece, italy, france, egypt, guatemala, vietnam, iran, indonesia. again, the list goes on. what, you didn't know how the cia earned its paychecks? this stuff shouldn't be that obscure. >I believe capitalism and a free market supported by a democracy of free >elections is the only answer. Look at the countries where these things >are not. These countries are not being flooded with people fleeing the >oppressions of the United States of America, but the US is being >flooded with people fleeing the oppresive regimes of their former >countries. the u.s. turns away refugees from places we are actively destroying, and makes a big deal out of accepting those from "enemy" states. one of the largest emigrations in history were people fleeing the u.s. after the revolution because of george washington's brutality. you can look it up. >The USA is not perfect, no place is, but it is the BEST country on the planet. the usa is the most evil country in history. at least for those of us who think principles like those enumerated in the un charter, the declaration of independence, the nuremberg trials, and, geez, the friggin' golden rule are pretty good. if you want to argue over interpretations, that's one thing. but please get your facts straight before you do. ok, maybe i shouldn't have said all this on the list. and i'll probably refrain from doing so in the future. but sometimes you just get too riled up. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 1997 09:51:41 +0200 From: jlaw@mem.unibe.ch (Jeff Lawrence) Subject: Re: Favourite spoken word **Date: Sun, 6 Jul 1997 11:19:51 -0700 (PDT) **From: "Daniel Saunders" ** **> >"...and then they'll have the assassination of president pumpkin..." ** **Not sure. Mike Runion ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 97 9:51:32 EDT From: Jeff Rosedale Subject: faves, raves, order Listening to Mellow Together requires an ability to groove to nearly pure silliness. It's as close to Monty Python as Robyn has come on record. For myself, Ye Sleeping Knights of Jesus is quite good in the demo version... and I Got a Message for You is a scream in a live show- I wouldn't be the least surprised if this appears in "Storefront" or on the soundtrack CD (he did a great little bit on "eggs" before singing this at the Dec. 11 afternoon show, with schmaltzy lounge lizard vocals for a verse or two). I am not so big on Superman- the lyrics are amusing but the song has too much of a limp to it. For some inexplicable reason I find the bass and drums annoying on this track. Now, in the "are you embarrassed easily?" section, I confess the arrangement of my music is wildly haphazard- 2 separate LP collections, older and newer, both in some order of "preference" by artist, then chronologically within artist. Lately I've not added towards the ends of these collections as I got concerned that the ones at the end would be first to warp, so Mossy Liquor is further inwards than preference would dictate. Tapes are the most organized, alphabetical by main entry (artist or title if a compilation) and chronological within artist- with separate sections for Robyn, Elvis C. and XTC. CDs are a jumble, arranged in sections by artist or similar artists. Robyn has his own section, with the next most prolific being a combined section of Stan Ridgway/Drywall/WOV, Finn/Tim Finn, and XTC. Doubles, like the Soft Boys compilation, are separate. Even chronology is abandoned here.
